7 years ago I didn't even know how to do an oil change. Grew up around computers, not cars and never had an old man or mechanical mates to teach me anything. I've torn down the front of my old Sorento to change cam position sensors, chased an overheat issue around, changing thermos, the radiator, done a heater hose delete, sold it, bought a diesel version of the same SUV, fitted a catch can, done a front to back oil changes and even put in a touchscreen head unit. Learned everything I've done from the University of CZcams and done it all on a disability pensioner's budget with hand tools.
Had a dream the other week about doing some mods for a stealth camper build in my Sorento, removing the back seats, using that space to recess a fridge and a second battery setup, low profile drawers in the back with a bed over the top of it all on one side and open storage on the other, open one back door to get at the fridge, the other door to get at more drawers under the head of the bed. Want it all to be modular so it can be removed and left in the shed most of the time and set up for when I go off on my missions. Just had some new tires fitted today, been saving for ages for that. Next I want to do a 2 inch lift (mostly for new springs and shocks, the old ones have 16 years wear on 'em.) Wouldn't mind a front lokka but 1. I don't think they make them for my 4WD and 2. haven't thought about saving up for one. anyway this video makes me think about other DIY mods I could do, and maybe about learning to weld.

I was watching it thinking the same thing. Was relieved to see them measuring up from the bed. They must have realised a spirit level wasn't working and then levelled the car...or maybe it took them so long with the "angles" because they got it all tacked together before realising the car was on an angle and the canopy was crooked.

Living in the QLD Outback and in the Middle of Cattle Country, There is not an Exhaust shop within a 1000k radius, One evening while drinking a few Beers after day of loading Cattle on a Truck, I had the Bright Idea to put Exhaust Stacks on my 84 Petrol Hilux tray back . Exhaust stacks ended up being Made out of Oval Cattle Rail that was laying in the scrap pile and all the piping was made out of a old set of extractors off a holden 202 and the original exhaust pipe from the hilux, After 5 years of running that set up with the Huge Toyota Muffler mounted under the cab, I decided to give the old girl a new redback muffler and a lukey Hotdog, those were welded in With a Genset Stickwelder that we use to weld up fences and gates.

The only way to learn this stuff is to get your hands dirty and have a crack at it.
My first car was only a shitbox Suzuki Hatch that I rebuilt from the ground up including the engine and gearbox. Before doing that I had never even changed a tyre. I didn't even have CZcams back then. I had a few old commodore repair manuals, a few mates who knew some very basic stuff. It took about 9 months of weekends to get it done. That was over 20 years ago and although I have never tacked a project that big again, I have never had any problems fixing my own cars. I've never had to pay a mechanic for anything other then work required for warranty purposes. And one time where I had to pay to get a new starter motor on an BF falcon because I had no tools that would get to the bolts and I didn't feel like pulling the engine to save a $100.

I bought a fairly stock PK Ranger. I swapped the well body to a tray. Did a custom under tray battery box. I installed the lift kit and a custom 90l sub tank mounted under the tray that gravity feeds into the main tank.
The PK had a terrible stock radio. I changed the fascia to allow me to install radio with reverse camera.
I made blanking plates for the EGR after it shat itself for the second time.
I installed DC DC charger system and catch can.
Most recently found a vacuum switching valve that was causing boost issues and fixed it.
Learning how the car works, building and fixing myself is far more rewarding than getting someone else to do it.
Both parents are academics and I learnt most of my car stuff from you tube and trial and error.

Bought a '98 Suzuki Vitara during university and threw more homemade mods at it than should've been done. Taught myself to weld from YT vids like Shauno and made a full front winch bumper, rear bumper w/ hitch and tire carrier, rock sliders, seats from a Mitsubishi Montero Sport on diy brackets, then did a 2" body lift + 1" suspension spacer and threw a snorkel on it from an 80 series. Threw some mud 33's on and took it everywhere. Didn't spend more than $1500 on everything...bought the truck for less than that.

I started rebuilding a HJ75 around Christmas time 2018. It had Fred Flintstone floors in it and you could see daylight through the windscreen surround. Working around school and now uni, it's almost there. I gave the entire body a good coat of 2-pack and put new rubbers in everywhere. Last weekend a mate of mine helped me mount the hydraulic tipper tray and made a few adjustments on the mounting frame. It looks soo good I'm itching to get it on the road!

Great set up guys! Out of my comfort zone was installing a Suzuki Vitara snorkel on my Subaru Forester, no template, just a photo of a mates one over in Aussie to go off!

Bobbed the bed on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma. Cut out 14" between the tailgate and rear tire and then put it back together. Never done any bodywork or paint before but jumped right in. It came out killer.

From nerd that builds computers and drones, I bought a N70 Hilux last year and have managed to strip and sound proof the cabin, oil catch can, chip, clean the injectors, light bar, more USB ports and a rear 12v connector. Reckon I'll try my hand at something more substantial in the future but the little changes have made her a hoot in the time being.

    JOCKO!! Love the Luxie bruva.
My small tip would be to coat the wood box in the tub with some Duratex or something similar. A roll on bed liner type product will really make it durable & able to weather any moisture you come across.
    Great job on the build!!
Very fun to watch in my 85’ Yota 4x4 on my lunch break here in Capistrano Beach, California.

First thing I've ever done on my car was installing a new psico airbox and plumb kit to suite.... i was really anxious about how I would go doing it myself and I did it and haven't stopped doing my own mods ever since. I've caught the modification bug!!!

Tip,, pull your draw frame out again unscrew it all and glue it,, then put all the screws back in it and reinstall.
then find some method of blocking the gap between the canopy and the tub. And yes,, even with your best efforts at building, it looks great
