What is Neuromuscular Horse Dentistry?

Hi, I am Jolien from EquiHealth and in this video I will show and explain you what Neuromuscular Horse Dentistry is and how I practice this on horses. Neuromuscular horse dentistry, also known as Natural Balance Dentistry™, is dedicated to realigning the jaw to achieve optimal neuromuscular, proprioceptive and physical function in a horse’s whole body. starting with adjusting the incisors, it provides guidance and stability to the temporomandibular joint, also known as the Temporo Mandibular Joint. Followed by adjustments to the molar table surfaces to provide anatomically correct inclination, which is the angle between upper and lower teeth. By adjusting the inclination of a horse's dentition, the horse gains a complete and natural movement of its jaw. This balances its TMJ and maximizes surface-to-surface contact between teeth, allowing the horse to maintain or regain its full, natural bodily function.
I check the horses physical condition by practicing osteopathical assessments.
I always introduce everything to the horses. From the use of the essential oils of Young Living to keep them calm, to accepting my hands in their mouth, to putting on the speculum and balancing their teeth. I keep introducing everything and give them the time they need to relax in this particular situation.
They get breaks whenever they’re standing steady and offering to keep their head low. In this way they also get to process this whole experience.
I open and close the speculum multiple times to avoid distress on their TMJ.
By only adjusting what is needed I try to regain or adjust their bite plain to receive an inclination that works best for each individual
I like to end every Neuromuscular Horse Dentistry session with some stretches, to show the horse the new possibilities of movements because of the now released TMJ and jaw.
