- Hank is joined by Mark Beaumont for another epic challenge. This time, they take on a gravel adventure through the Scottish wilderness to The Old Forge, the most remote of Britain’s 46,800 pubs! Located in a tiny town on the legendary Knoydart Peninsula, there are no roads and it is only accessible by helicopter, boat or an overnight trek. Is this the world's toughest pub ride?

Where should Hank and Mark go on their next adventure? 🌍
You lads are so lazy, anything to skive off at the pub :) :p
Greenland
New Zealand.
a pub that is open?
Spain
Now GMBN has to do to the same route on mountain bikes... to show why choosing the right bike is important.
Yeah, this would be an excellent mountain bike ride for experienced riders.
They should've done a collab with GMBN & feature different bikes. Though it may look & sound like a broken record. (Same concept, different video) But I'm sure they'll manage.
a bit extreme to go out there without a suspension...
It seems by the video that it would be irrelevant which type of bike you use, as the terrain is more suited to hiking rather then cycling.
More like an off road motorcycle.
The cameraperson up there with them really did all that + the drone and camerawork, mad props for that.
You can see him at 18:59 standing on the left side
@@JoschMajor haha yeah i noticed the ninja
absolutely!!! amazing job.
Our camera team always put in a big effort 🙌 Should we do BTS film?
I think Markus Stitz was involved on this one, you should check out some of his gravel books
To everyone suggesting a mountain or emtb…
I did a similar difficulty route this last week in the Highlands. From Glencoe down the West Highland Way to Clashgour, then over to Glen Kinglass, down to Loch Etive, around the banks of Loch Etive and back up Glen Etive to Glencoe.
43 miles.
It took 11 hours.
Trust me, whilst the terrain looks like it’s rideable on a mountain bike or emtb, it’s not. You spend a lot of time carrying the bike through boggy peat or up rocky narrow tracks (if there even is a track) and the last thing you want is anything heavy. Frankly, my route and theirs just aren’t suitable for taking bikes on at all. And as they pointed out, without the right gear and mountain experience, it’s potentially very dangerous as well.
A great film (and kudos to ‘The 3rd Man’) but I feel Hank’s disclaimer should have had more force to it. This is not country or terrain to be underestimated. I came the closest I’ve ever come to calling Mountain Rescue as I wasn’t as well prepared as Hank and Mark. I was lucky nothing went wrong for me.
What an awesome video from the Global Hiking Network... ❤
😂
😂😂😂😂
It would have been great if the camera man could have been given a little credit in end for doing such an incredible job. He too had equally ridden through the same terrain, all the while filming Hank & Mark. Thanking the sponsors is totally understandable, just one "Thank You" couldn't have hurt anyone.
he made one small "walk off" part in the video, towards the end
As a beer geek, home brewer and cyclist I wanted to see the pint at the end. I felt like I needed it! Great video. More Mark Beaumont would be great. Can't get enough of his epic rides.
I feel the camera person that went with Hank and Mark deserved a mention at the end.
A true hero
Who's identity can never be revealed? 😮
GCN's version of the Stig@@peterleffler2062
That would be @reizkultur . Worth checking out his other fantastic bikepacking videos and books with routes.
Really good to see some cautionary tales on this channel. I think all of us get very hyped with bikes which is great, but a little reality check from time to time could save lives.
And this is why I use flat pedals and hiking sandals with my gravel bike.
A video with Mark is always a great video! Awesome job by the presenters and the whole crew
Thanks, glad you liked it! For some more epic Mark and Hank action, check out our "End to end' film on GCN+ 👉 gcn.eu/7RF
Fair play attempting that second half on gravel bikes. Definitely XC MTB terrain at the very least.
Yet another top notch video from GCN. Particular credit goes to the "third man" who provided us with some epic and brilliant footage of the scenery and the effort required to get there. Did they hike or cycle all the way as well?
Another question needs to be answered - how did they get back?
Ferry back to Mallaig and cycle (on the Road to the Isles) or train back to Fort William. The tarmac road at Inverie is completely isolated from the rest of the UK road network and the only way in apart from the route Hank and Mark took is a small foot ferry. The cars shown in the film must have arrived by specially chartered ships.
"I fought Knoydart and... Knoydart won, I fought Knoydart and... Knoydart won," Great video guys. I did this on an MTB back in the 2000s and then again a couple of years later running; it was quicker on foot from the road end. If you want bikeable gravel from there head north to Glen Elg: better riding and a better pub.
I was sitting on the bench outside the Old Forge pub when Hank, Mark and Camera Man cycled in to Inverie. They didn't look quite as perky as they did in the second take that made the cut!! Well done, cracking effort in a truly beautiful part of the world. Great video
“How hard can it be?” - the most famous last words before all hell breaks lose…😂😂😂
You guys found a route for a brand new bike category…something perfect to take you CROSS COUNTRY…I wonder what to name it 😂 Hats off, awesome ride.
I love videos with Mark in them. You know it’s going to be good ‼️‼️
We agree! Have you seen Mark and Hank's LEJOG challenge on a tandem? Check it out on GCN+ 👉 gcn.eu/7RF
Marks a solid presenter!
Oh man, I can’t believe Mark and Hank didn’t get a pint at the pub after all that! I was expecting them to finally walk into the pub only to find Dan Lloyd sitting at the bar working at least his 3rd pint. Of course, Dan would have driven there 😉
My takeaways from this video are that Mark Beaumont is a talented and charismatic presenter, and that Scotland is a breathtakingly beautiful country. Well done.
i really like how you subtle present sponsors. it never feels like a commercial 🙂
Yeah, they separated out the "pay the bills" sponsors part into a separate video, leaving this one with an epic ride, dramatic scenery and Hank's crashes...
Definitely didn't bite off more than you could chew as Hank claimed. You were well prepared for the difficulties you encountered - Kudos!
My biggest question: You're on a pub ride - Why oh why get up at o-dark-thirty if the pub isn't open for several more hours? Ugh! Sleep! You earned it! Mark looks too young to be one of those old guys who can't sleep through the night!
(Also - couldn't help noticing that photog - on a bike - behind you guys on the mountain. It's okay to acknowledge the crew on such an effort!)
Can we talk about the poor guy who had to film with Hank and Mark? Cheers to them!
You need to do a behind the scenes on how these epic videos are made. I assume when the road ended you were followed by an ebike camera person with a drone. Fairly epic couple of days out for them too I expect!
Comment ehich side are you on?
That's a great idea! It would be really cool and certainly something we could do in the future!
GMBN lads watching this thinking “need a mountain bike GCN?”.
Truly epic ride & kudos to the crew filming along the way with that challenging terrain. Good job for self filmed bits too.
Tonight on TopCycle - we head to the pub. Mark gets stuck in the mud and Hank goes head over heals.
What a beauty, kudos to the film crew who manage to capture these amazing sceneries!
Huge kudos to Mark and Hank for completing this, and also the poor crew member visible at 18:58
I do a bit of hiking as well, and this route is spoken of in hushed tones. Don't do it solo, make sure you take hiking poles because of the bogs and a sat phone or emergency device is HIGHLY recommended because it's so remote.
It seems that Hank can do anything, he only has trouble with things people do for light excersise, like cafe rides, pub rides, trying a penny-farthing...
Great effort!
😂😂
Don't normally comment, but I love it when Hank and Mark get together! Legends the pair of them, Mark the voice of experience, Hank the excitable up for anything student! Brilliant!
Well done, I know how difficult that ride is I tried to ride (mostly walking) the opposite direction on mountain bikes over 20 years ago.
This is the most townie video I've ever seen.
Glad they brought the safety gear with them, really can go wrong quick. Good heads on shoulders. Would be great to see GMBN do the same.
YES! That's what I want to see. Adventure out there on your doorstep. The very fact that this one WAS a step beyond makes it all the more worth while, and though you say "don't do this route" you've gotta feel it would have been fine mid summer with an early start. Loving that you're giving Yeoleo a chance to shine too. They're clearly doing some good stuff.
Thanks Peter, glad you enjoyed it!
Even with an early start and slightly better conditions, if this messed with Marc and Hank, I’d be STRONGLY inclined to listen to their advice.
Good advert for getting a 29er MTB, stunning scenery.
That has to be the most extreme trip to the pub ever. Utterly bonkers yet stunning at the same time.
Epic is not the word. You pair are mad (in a nice way). Cant wait to see what you both get up to next
What would you like to see us do?!
Well you've cycled down mountains in Chile, lands end to John o'groats. How about France to Spain over the Pyrenees
The gravel route across Europe 😊😊😊😊
The freehubs are so loud rrRRrRRrRRr that at times RrRRrrRRrR they get in the rRrrRrRrrRrRrRR way of understanding what rRrRrRrR is being said. Other than that, great choice of music.
If GCN did a pub ride, probably the best in the world. Cheers m'dears!
* thank you very much for taking us along!
Commando training ground for WWII, home to wild boar (Loch Arkaig), Jacobite gold hoard said to be hidden up there too…..
What great, positive attitudes they have. Determination plus knowledge equals job done. Bravo!
The amazing cinematography and music selection really embody the epicness of the Scottish wilderness and the epic adventure the lads just went on.
Hank, Mark, I love your positive mindset and wonderful energy that you both bring to these madcap adventures. Thank you for entertaining us, maybe mtb next time...
Wow...Good on the both of ya ! quite a place Thanks to JLW and Mark and crew , the countryside , with waterfalls and bogs...cool and foreboding !
This is amazing, guys! I've never walked or cycled in the part of the Highlands you've just been through, but from my Cairngorms and Hebrides experience, I confirm the exhilaration of those tough and supremes paths and tracks, the challenged of never QUITE being properly equipped, though you've got top stuff with you, because the terrain is the boss, wilderness is boss. Though you expect to be "in the saddle", the wild will always put you off it literally speaking. I'm radically impressed by the challenge, and sympathise with your missing the pint and crossing back with the ferry ;).
It's a pretty tough part of the world! But it's certainly worth it!
this is a GCN+ film category, great job putting it here!
Omg just the intro is awesome ❤️! Loved seeing both Hank and Marc traverse the amazing areas and see how they got on!! Was wondering how they were going to go back 😅!
Quite enjoyed the camera work, scenery, and able to vicariously see how this all panned out 🤜🏼💥!! Love this type of content for sure 🥰!!
Looking forward to see where the next adventure will be ☺️!!
Know knoydart well … I’ve a mate who is an open canoe instructor and guide who lives there.
Know that pub too.
Last time I was there, we drove up to Mallaig and paddled open boats round the open sea to get there. Bloody mad thing to do too.
Well done guys
Awesome scenery! For some reason, I loved the bit at the end, outside the Old Forge, where you could see a hand and towel cleaning the window while Hank is talking. Getting it all ready for them 🍺!
I have been to that pub! Albeit by boat! Superb place. Great ride fellas! They will have to stop saying that it is only accessible by foot! 🤣🤣
Nice. I wonder if an FS trail or even XC bike was used, how much more of this would have been rideable. Seems at least the final downhill trail towards the pub would be rideable?
Good stuff GCN!
You can down all of that last section on a full susser I do quite regularly. There is a 40 min push to the top.
I have walked nearly all of the route and you will be walking most of it even with a full Susser...
As always Mark + Hank on their epic adventures.. You guys rock!!
What a duo! Have you seen their tandem LEJOG attempt? We made a film about it on GCN+ 👉 gcn.eu/7RF
This looks like: We are well prepared, Hank even brought his tiny water bottle!
One of the best gcn videos yet! EPIC challenge! I absolutely LOVE this content! So great that you were able to convey the very Rugged beauty even without the film crew! Thank you for patterning safety precautions (except of course, Hanks Killer Krashes)! The gear and bikes and your attitudes won out. Can't believe those boggy bits! And those amazing passes! Glad you were sensible and bedded down for the night. I will gladly watch any adventure like this. Preparation is key. My notifications are turned on, hope, in future, yours will be too:)
Glad there were two clear warnings that this is not a bike route, but a seriously committing hiking route - Mountain Rescue wouldn't thank GCN for folks getting injured in such a remote location cos they tried to follow your lead. Also really good to see the emphasis on kit and comms difficulties in such remote settings.
As epic as these videos are, I have reservation about the increase in these kind of vids being made to areas that bikes really shouldn't be going, both from the safety perspective, but especially the damage to fragile environments (ie the e-bike episode on the Cairngorm platueau) - just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should. As influencers, food for thought?
Nonetheless beautiful scenery and kudos to the drone crew (Kirk?) and Markus for filming on the ground!
Fabulous. Regardless of your chosen cycling discipline surely Scotland is all you’ll ever need. If you are a UK resident….. blessed.
You guys are crazy, my now wife (at the time fiancé) wanted to break up with me when I took her hiking there 25 years ago.😂
Well done and thank you for the brilliant pictures, sweet memories.👍
Thanks a lot!
😂😂 You brave nutters.
Very Rough Stuff Fellowship.
I've spent many a summer in Upper Glen Dessary and have walked over to Inverie and back many times plus pretty much every summit in that region.
Never once did I think of riding my bike on those boggy steep trails. 😂
A very entertaining video and I'm so glad you didn't break any bones.
Always awsome when Hank & Mark go for an adventure
Awesome ride and video. Well done ! Thank you.
This video needs a David Attenborough voice-over. Beautiful nature!
Would be super cool to see a colab with GMBN on bike packing, co-op with gravel and mountain bikes
So you went for a walk and took some bikes with you. Great video.
Taking Our Bikes For A Walk 🥾
Hank, mark you guys are legends! What an amazing albeit short - ish adventure!
For a longer Hank and Mark adventure, why not check out 'End to end' on GCN+! 👉 gcn.eu/7RF
Beautifully done and always a great time with Mark on board (or…bike)
That was brutal and epic. Thanks to all who help make his video. take care, Al
Fantastic advert for Scotland - needs no adverts really but always a pleasure to see. Full marks for labouring the contingency plans and not doing alone. Wow what a route - both good and monstrous (gnarly 😅) 😮 Great video thanks guys!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it! Scotland is such an epic place
What beautiful countryside and absolutely amazing challenge!💯💯💯
Love watching these adventure stories, would love to do something like this myself one day
That last part looks like a mountain bike would have been a better fit. Hank should have brought his other "bro" Blake along with a mountain bike to show the pros/cons of both types of bikes in a ride like this.
I didn't know the route, but at the start of the video I thought, no chance! I like challenges, but this was much more than that and didn't sound enjoyable. Hats off for even attempting it, and kudos for completing it. I really enjoy these Hank and Mark epic challenge videos!
Gorgeous video!
Equipment was clearly outmatched. You needed proper mountain bikes and probably dropper seat posts. Also, those Yoleo wheels are so incredibly loud! Cool bikes though. And “no crew?” Who was the magical cameraman and drone operator?
Glad you enjoyed it!
Got to the Old Forge with some friends by hiking in from Kinloch Hourn (a bit further north start) in 2018, one of the finest memories of being in the Highlands
Scotland (Highlands, especially) is such a gem!
It's such a stunning location!
I love Hank challenges. They're probably closest to the type of cycling me and my friends enjoy, and it's always inspiring to what he's getting up to! 🎉
He certainly loves the adventure!
Laughed so hard I had to cough. Loved the inclusion of Hank's tumble!
Great to see my home on here. Your very lucky the pub only just reopened and the track down from the top of the last Glen has also had work this year. I've done that last climb with a full suser on my back. Never again it's no fun but a right of passage!! Well done. 👊
Love it guys,, your adventures just get better, totally unrealistic...but so awesome to experience
Love these guys together, both mad in a good way!
This looks like a cross between Lord of the Rings and that old Aussie lager advert! 😊
What an adventure. Well done gents, well done film crew! 👏👏👏
My favourite videos of challenge rides especially the mark and Hank challenges!
Hank and Mark make a great couple , great video yet again thoroughly enjoyed it , just watched the Himalayan video on GCN + and got the La vuelta later what a day of cycling without leaving the house
An amazing adventure through beautiful Scotland! Congrats on making it to the pub even though the trek almost kilt ye
And this is why I sold my gravel bike and bought a XC mountain bike. Choose the right tool for the job guys. Enjoyed the video 👍
Love all the breathtaking scenery. But we wanted to see the pub too!
Unreal. Absolutely legendary stuff.
Epic ride, epic camera work. I would have chosen a hardtail mountain bike for that ride. With flat pedals. Clipless are more trouble than they are worth
I just recently watched a video of two blokes walking there. They really had a tough time and as a reward the pub was closed when they got there. Hardest Geezer (he is in the process of running the length of Africa, one marathon at a time) and Zac Alscop (funny dude). I never thought it was possible to ride there. But you're legends and did it.
I would love to see a video from you explaining just how you film these adventures! Incredible!!!
We needed to see the pint at the pub! Great ride boys.
Epic video guys - but who was the 3rd man? Chapeau to the unsung videoing hero!
I've walked from Glenfinnan to Inverie, there are barely any tracks, there is a huge amount of bog and if it rains the tracks disappear and the ground that isn't bog becomes bog. Ignoring the fact I've just seen a video showing how they did this with a bike, I've no idea how they did this with a bike!! Respect to Hank, Beaumont and the cameraman
Epic adventure y'all, glad you made it back!
Good to see the combo from the 1903 Tpur video back
Top trip guys + epic shot - 21:30 how lady is cleaning windows in the behind doors :D
Epic video thanks for sharing. Looked like mountain bike terrain, not sure gravel bikes was best choice, but then I’m sitting at home😊
Take a shot every time Hank goes OTB 😂
Seriously though, brilliant video, amazing scenery 👍🏻
So beautiful! Love Scotland
So thrilled to see Mark again.
You were so, so ,so lucky to have that overnight breeze !!!!!!!
Brilliant! More please!
