- Destiny 2: The Final Shape reviewed by Travis Northup on PC and Xbox Series X|S, also available on Xbox One and PlayStation.
Destiny 2’s potential was clear from the first time I blasted my way through The Red War seven years ago, but Bungie never actually realized much of that potential until The Final Shape. This finale expansion’s story largely succeeds at delivering a satisfying ending, the raid is brutal and epic, the Prismatic subclasses breathe fresh life into combat, and the new enemy faction adds some much-needed variety to the things you’ll spend hours shooting in the face. None of that makes Destiny’s avalanche of confusing RPG systems, currencies, and storylines any easier to digest - but for the first time in a long while, I can wholeheartedly recommend pushing through that darkness, because there’s now a bright and beaming light at the end of the tunnel.

Zavala didn't make a turn out of nowhere. This has been built upon since the season of the haunted when his past trauma resurfaced. Since then, he's had his faith in the Traveler destroyed by tragedy after tragedy, all while his brightest source of hope remained silent. The Witness forced Zavala to relive that memory and tried to use it to manipulate him, which played on his emotions. After all of that, Cayde-6 showing up again when Zavala wanted his family back too, he was willing to throw his values aside to destroy the Witness at all costs.
To be fair, that's story content no longer in the game.
If you only got into the game now, all you have is the Expansions themselves. Zavala is acting differently than how he was in Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witch Queen, and Lightfall.
Also Forsaken isn't in the game anymore, so Cayde is only a statue at the tower with no other context in the game currently.
For a long time, invested fan, it makes sense. For everyone else, it's like jumping into LotR by reading Return of the King first
@@ahairyhooligan True, but the reviewer claims to be a D2 veteran that's been here the whole time. I'd be presenting two interpretations in a review for a situation like this: one view is from the returning or new players, the other is a view from a veteran of the game that has stayed with the story the whole way.
@ahairyhooligan problem is...he IS a long time veteran in his own words. There is no reason for him to think zavala is acting weird. His review is from his perspective as a long time player. You can't both be a long time player AND not know why zavala is acting this way
Long time vet that only plays expansions for the reviews . If you keep up with him on any podcast or shows he’s always referring to expansion content and nothing else . Reviews are always top notch I’ll give him that but man will whine about stuff that’s been fixed for half a year lol
Well to be more accurate he’s slowly been losing faith since Season of Arrivals where he was frustrated that the Traveler wasn’t doing anything against the fleet
Spoilers:
“Zavala is a loose cannon for no discernible reason” the man was offered to spend an eternity with the family he saw slaughtered in front of him…. Of course he’s not going to stay stoic
Thank you! Like why does no one get that?
Like did they even play the dlc
He says that the travelers takes and takes but stays silent when we ask for help. He was sick of helping the traveler and only wanted to help the people no matter what
Zavala arc wasn’t meant to show his weakness but to show The Witness’s power to attack any one psychologically, breaking them down from the inside. Choosing Zavala as a vehicle for this narrative was to show that nobody escape The Witness. We have to end it.
Spoilers
Season of Haunted did this EXACT PLOT POINT BEFORE. In which case he was forced to come to terms with his grief.
Zavala has started to doubt in the traveler since Witch Queen and Bungie has been building this for years, it's not just, "no reason"
Even before that, go rewatch Red War cutscenes, he was near the edge back then too lol
Bro did not play season of the haunted
IGN’s perspective on Zavala and how they feel like they made him a softy for no reason is like saying you haven’t played in the last 5 years but call yourself a veteran. Jfc.
I’ve been playing since D1, played every expansion and have skipped every cut scene, some people just want to shoot things and grind loot and play through challenging raids.
@@CoNiCuZnthat’s cool but then your opinion on the story like this guy complaining about zavala isn’t valid
Yes, thats the issue, if your not here for all the seasons of content and dedicate your life to it, or go to external youtube videos or lore cards, you have no idea whats going on. You can have stories in a grand saga, but they must also stand on their own. For as much as destiny fans love to compare their game to Marvel, something Marvel did, which destiny does not, is make their stories actually digestible while being apart of a wider story. Avengers, Civil war, Ultron, Infinite, endgame all stand by themselves even though they are very directly connected to each other.
@@LotusRealdedicate your life is a big stretch. seasonal stories take 1 hour of your time per week lmao extremely manageable even for a father of 3 (my gaming buddy)
@@WinstonOfDojimathat sounds awful
So the reviewer says he’s a veteran but doesn’t understand Zavala’s turn? Make it make sense
Veteran = Played the game casually for a long time. Probably can’t even explain the sword logic to you. Smh.
The psion like enemies are actually psions. Bungie mentioned that when it was first showcased
Zavala has been doubting the Traveler for the past few years now. How did they reviewer not know this as a “veteran”?
Perhaps because the story is utterly confusing
@@minbari73it’s only confusing if you don’t play the game. Even if you missed out on Season of the Haunted, enough context is given inside the Final Shape campaign for Zavala’s motivations to be clear
@@minbari73 it’s not. The Traveler does not speak or respond directly to our calls, even under dire circumstances. This has frustrated Zavala ever since we met him, and it reached a tipping point when even inside the Traveler, it would not respond, and when it did, demanded death. If you haven’t caught on the fact we struggle to communicate with the Traveler after all these years then oh boy…
@@minbari73it’s really not lol. Story is pretty straightforward if you just play the game
It's IGN. They don't play the games they are actually reviewing.
It was a fine concluding campaign. Its design is, as always, top notch. However, being in the post raid period now, it still feels like standard D2. Bounties, a few quests in admittedly interesting landscapes. Echoes has its weekly story beats too. It’s been an interesting ride since the beta of D1. Some great memories for an aging gamer. Now 10 years older than when he started playing the damn game!
To whoever missed 3 consecutive shots on suspended Vex at 1:54...
... criminal.
my favorite comment
If they aren't already playing Destiny 2, this probably isn't gonna bring them in.
Zavala started doubting the traveler 2 or 3 expansions ago. Its hard to miss
Don’t forgot about the 12 man activity. It was epic
One of my favorite moments for sure. Especially after watching the world’s first race.
It’s a one time thing though. Doesn’t have much replay ability
Apparently we’re getting a grandmaster version of that mission
@@vernonhowell4070I mean so is the campaign, but that doesn't change the fact it was an amazing experience
Question, I'm not a Destiny 2 player but I'm curious, is this going to be the last expansion, the finale of Destiny 2?
No they announced Destiny 2 Frontiers coming next year
No, The final Shape and the episodes are the conclusion of everything that has been built up since destiny 1 but destiny 2 still has more content coming out.
Imagine the ending of Halo 3 and you get the picture of what this was for Destiny
This ends the light and dark saga, the futire of the frachice will be with new enemies and outside the sol system.
@@TruTrae ooooh nice, enjoy the game until the very end :)
You really didn't sell it to me 😅
Zavala didn't just turn out of nowhere, if you think that you have missed the past couple years of the story
Been playing this game for 10 years straight and experienced every low and every high, I'm satisfied with this expansion.
Also Travis breakdowns and analysis are on point .
I’m sorry for your loss
A worthy ending to the saga. Got teary even
❄️
zavala did act out of nowhere anyone who actually played would know he pretty much did the same thing in the nightmare season
Lmao all the people complaining about reviewer point about Zavala pretending like it's not a major point of discourse amongst fans
It really isn’t I have not seen anyone complain about it
This game is still alive? Dang
Zavala was stressing but it was because he was promised his son and wife so yes there is a reason why he is so willing to risk himself, not his ghost or his friends but only sacrificing himself so he can be unburdened from uncertain fate, it could be even argued he was being controlled by the Whitnes.
That's nice and all but this really should have been Destiny 5 without any vaulting of content happening.
People hating this review dont want a review, they want their own opinion confirmed.
Zavala being a loose cannon for no reason lmao
So the Season of the Haunted wasn't a thing then?
Bungie finally cooked
Yeah, they're cooked alright.
@@MarbleThumbs They just released their biggest success for the franchise. Perhaps you are coping?
The only Zavala moment that didn't feel right to me was the moment where he goes full doomer/no hope mode after you unlock your new super on the highway.
You're saying we should believe in destiny?
wait, ain't Cayde-6 dead?
Not anymore
Commercially I’m curious how this will do cause don’t you need to own the other expansion packs to play this? Seems like a small user base for a very old game! I’d love to get into destiny but the expansions are just too expensive tbh
No u don't.
This isn't the end of Destiny 2.
On the matter of Zavala the guy has slowly been losing faith in the traveler since the Season of Arrivals.
Sticking through all the lows making it really worth it for this payoff
IGN being IGN
Zavala's arc in this expansion didn't come out of nowhere
The final shape is a square
Bro ion know it just came to me buh imagine just imagine the movie “Equalizer” with Denzel Washington into a equalizer game sure fire jawn not no waste time some take timing fire combat stealth bro tssss
Gotta pop the tormentor’s shoulders there, bud
True story, that bug me watching it
Looking dated now Destiny
The final shape is easily one of the best in destiny history and it give me renew hope and faith for the bungle team ❤️❤️
Dustin should have done this review!
Destin
I’m a skeptic, but Bungie did the impossible, ended the original Destiny saga on a major high note.
That’s cute . To bad Elden ring dlc is coming out
The two games are completely different?????
6:18 It sounds like Final Fantasy VII OST
Final shape is one of the best expansions they have ever done they really knocked it out of the park
They gave it a 9, done.
Low IQ people only care about scores.
This expansion feels no different than any other expansion from before. It's pretty meh imo.
Then u haven't played it
To me Witch Queen had an overall better campaign but the after campaign quests have floored Witch Queen in comparison. Dual Destiny alone
FInally we begin a New Saga, is a chance for everyone know the next, Destiny 2 is 75% lost lore because of Vaulted and Season!
So glad it’s the last season
It's not
Holy crap destiny still going lol
By the way, Destiny 2: The Final Shape got beaten Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in the Metacritic website.
OK? Don't get the point?
@@deweycheetumhowe4970 You didn't watch Aztecross video, did you?
Comparing 10 reviews to 150 reviews is wild
@@blasianbornnCheck open critic it has a lot more reviews and still is going strong
And FF7R undersold massively, so what?
Wonder how destin is doing after lying about playing the whole campaign 😂
No please start a new IP
How does this reviewer still have a job?
just release destiny 3 lol
Why? What would be different about it. And don't even bother talking about game engines.
this review deserves the ratio
Tl:DR
They finally hired a private chef , instead of feeding us their home cooking.
They give it a score
Nah give it a 10
Mmmmmmm
Mmm 🤔 mmmmmm 💭 mmmm 🧐… ok na
Is final shape a contender for game of the year only time will tell because it’s still early
It's an expansion not a full game
@@thecrimsonwarlock5494cuberpunk 2077
This is guy rlly complained that the new enemy type can use stasis and strand against you and called it "cheap"....
Let Bunjie make Halo again please
“The dread feel like fries fully original faction”
Well considering the scorn play almost nothing like the fallen I’m gonna have to disagree
9 outta 10 I'll take it!
Bungie W
Yes a 9!! Its a miracle lets go!!
if the reviewer wasnt that braindead for the zavala stuff, it would have been a 10
@@lordsaladito no it wouldn't boring mission structure again
Not a D2 vet
You can tell when he uses the sidearm for range, then pulls out the pulse rifle and ADS on enemies he can literally touch with his melee.
I've never been a fan of this guy's reviews. He makes them biased as well. Very whiny reviewer.
9 / 10
Its borning,still havent finished it,wasted 50 euros
Huh, no pvp? Hmmm..
You guys missed the chance to call this the final final review
Is this it? Can this game go in the bin now?
further proof ign has no idea what they're talking about
Can't wait to see this amazing expansion removed like they did with Forsaken.
50 views in 2 minutes bro fell off
8yrs for 8 views, bro never got on😅
That is a boowamp of an ending in my opinion. story was short and you just fight the same enemies you fought every other dlc. Fkin taken still around like cmon. there wasnt much risked in this and felt bland for a game of 10 years. final light was better and bashed way harder compared to this
Boring
This is probably Destiny’s biggest problem: CZcamsrs and games journalists who perpetuate this fake narrative that there are issues with this game when in fact most of his complaints are skill issues or lack of knowledge/understanding of the game.
I’m not saying the game is perfect; obviously it’s got its flaws, but it’s overall an excellent game and TFS is its Magnum Opus. 10/10 🎉
A turd a decade in the making finally polished!
wow finally a destiny DLC that's actually worth it
Witchqueen, forsaken, beyond light were all worth it tbh
Wow, a 6?
Erm....you OK?
This reviewer is always too sarcastic and displays bias during every single review he does. Find someone else already. He does not review things properly.
Bungie still got it
People still play this?
And yet you’re still here commenting.😂
npc comment
Obviously 🙄
It’s so funny how bungee have to be on thin ice just to make a amazing product, just goes to show they are lazy developers and they need to be uncomfortable for now on.
It was a great campaign mission to final shape and probably one of the best rates ever but the game is still boring and tedious we would like to see a Sony fully take over bungie
Bro did not play season of the haunted
