6 Reasons Why Calgary is Better Than Edmonton - Calgary vs. Edmonton - Moving to Alberta

  • In this video I outline 6 ways in which I think the city of Calgary is better than the city of Edmonton.
    I posted a video on why I think Edmonton is better than Calgary a few days ago, and I wanted to switch it up and list some of the superior qualities of Calgary. I am a born and raised Albertan and I know both cities very well - honestly I don't really prefer one city over the other, they are very comparable and they each have a ton of great features.
    Calgary and Edmonton are the 2 biggest cities in Alberta, and this province is currently experiencing the highest provincial rate of growth in the country. People are moving here from within Canada and from around the world, and I thought it might be useful to someone if I did a couple videos comparing Edmonton and Calgary.
    Please Leave your comments below, I'd love to know where you stand on the Edmonton vs. Calgary debate as well as things you enjoy in each city!
    Thanks for watching, if you got some value out of this video please consider liking and subscribing to my channel - I am new to CZcams and this helps me out.
    Cheers!

    As someone who grew up in Edmonton, I can agree with what you are saying about the two downtowns. Everyone I knew in Edmonton hated downtown and avoided it like the plague. I had one office co-worker who said she refused to step foot in Downtown (out of fear of getting stabbed), and her only exception would be driving to the new arena for a hockey game. Overall, I think Edmonton's downtown reputation really hurt's it's overall image ... because the downtown areas of North American cities really symbolize the image of the overall city. So while I think Calgary and Edmonton are very similar cities in so many ways, I do believe that Calgary's superior downtown area has really boosted the city image a lot.

      I agree, Calgary really hasn't had the same noticeable increase in social disorder in their downtown core. I still think downtown Edmonton has a lot going for it, I have talked about this area a bit in previous videos and I still think it's one of the most interesting places to live in the city. I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!

      I agree. I’m from Edmonton and when I went to Calgary for the first time I was shocked. Especially recently. It’s downtown is way ahead then Edmontons. Nice architecture cleaner and a better layout. Plus Calgary is now second for most sky scraper behind Toronto. I really hope we can catch up

      Personally, I think it's safe to say that downtown areas of every major city around the world has suffered post-pandemic, including both Edmonton and Calgary. From what I hear Calgary's downtown has been declining recently as well, especially with all the layoffs in oil and gas that happened around the mid 2010s - and a lot of those jobs are just not coming back.

      I love Calgary's downtown, as a former Edmontonian I understand why people avoid Edmonton's downtown like the plague.

    Reason #2...nuff said ha ha ha. I live near Edmonton and I wish I was closer to the mountains! I'd be there almost every weekend if I was living in or near Calgary. Another reason why I think Calgary is better than Edmonton is more secondary living options. Just outside of Calgary you have 2 pretty good sized small towns...Airdrie and Okotoks. Then also you have Cochrane and Chestermere. Great video :)

    Your comparison of the two cities is balanced and fair. Inner city Calgary is more connected than Edmonton. It is easier to travel to different areas such as Kensington, Bridgeland, East Village, Inglewood, Mission, Marda Loop and 17th Ave SW by means other than car. The downtown core needs work but is making progress and has treasures like Prince's Island, Stephen Avenue, Millennium Park, Chinatown and RiverWalk.

    • @strangenorth

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback - I love walking between those different regions of the central core, excellent paths and Calgary's downtown just has an overall better vibe. I also enjoy the Calgary Chinatown area, I recall seeing it being used as a filming location when I was watching the Fargo Netflix show!

    Nailed it ! Edmonton is very different than Calgary. Your comment about "cozy" is exactly what i think but could not articulate 😂. I think Calgary has a better looking downtown,but as far as arts,shopping,unique old neighborhoods Edmonton is better.
    Edmonton needs to be cleaned up though ,and thw street scum needs to be curtailed. Great areas like Old Strathcona are being ruined . And Chinatown ,an area that used to be vibrant all night with restaurants has been destroyed.

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback! Glad you got the cozy bit, feels particularly like that in Edmonton right now. I definitely think citizens can do more to take back their neighborhoods, but also massive social problems happening with no easy solutions. I miss the old vibrancy of Chinatown too, I remember even 10 years ago going out late to eat at Hotpot 97 around 1 in the morning and it was remarkably different in that area.

    • @gp7910
      @gp7910 Před 5 měsíci

      @@strangenorthOne plan is to offer shelters outside historical tourist areas like Strathcona ,downtown,Chinatown ,etc.
      Sorry to be the old guy but when 10 years ago Chinatown was almost dead.
      In the old days most restaurants were open till 5 a.m. Always busy and a great place for a bite and two hour wind down. after the clubs.
      Even my neighborhood growing up ,Whyte ave around 89 to 91 st had Columbia pizza ,Greek family run place . Went to school with the daughter and worked with the son a couple years ago.
      Mario's,just down the block was open till 5 a.m. Another husband and wife run place that was awesome. Throw in old downtown's disappearance and it's hard to explain the shame of what's happened.
      Again sorry to bring age ,but as a young guy even the better part you seen Oakes compared to old downtown. It was a mini new york/ times square vibe
      Hope it continues to get better though!

    I was shocked to see how poorly connected "large" Canadian cities can be. No high-speed train between Edmonton and Calgary for example is simply unforgivable. Anyone who visited and lived in either Europe or the Far East will suffer here when it comes to using intercity transport.

    Interesting video - well done! I've been to Calgary only once, (been to the Rockies several times, however), and have only passed through Edmonton quickly on VIA Rail on the way to/from Toronto. I wish Vancouver, (where I'm from), had something like Stephen Avenue. Cheers!

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback! Stephen Avenue is great, although I love downtown Vancouver too - I've only been a couple times though and I'd like to go back soon. Edmonton has a ton of great attributes but Calgary's downtown has been a lot more vibrant for awhile now (although I do think Edmonton is cooler overall but that's harder to explain lol)

    • @gp7910
      @gp7910 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@strangenorthlol😂
      I hate to be the old guy but 2000 was a pale comparison to the 1970's
      My parents worked downtown. So many shops like Whyte Ave , department stores countless movie theaters. I wish there were a some videos to show what was done. It was a smaller version of times square and super busy with only a couple malls in the city back then and way less burbs. People went downtown then. A suburban mall culture caused a generation of "pearl clutchers" who avoid and fear downtown and brag how they never go there. Sad

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  Před 7 měsíci +1

      "A suburban mall culture caused a generation of "pearl clutchers" who avoid and fear downtown and brag how they never go there. Sad" - I really agree with this sentiment strongly. White flight, suburban flight, urban flight, whatever it's called - people abandoning city centers for suburbs when things get rough only creates more terrible urban sprawl and leaves fewer cool people in the city center to fight for the neighborhood. Also this spirit to abandon the downtown just seems dull and wimpy honestly. I also recognize the many advantages to more suburban areas and they may be better for families with younger children and other life circumstances. And of course not everyone chooses to live outside of the central core is a weak-willed person.
      Sounds like you've seen a lot of change downtown! My earliest memories of the area are around 1990, vastly different even then. I miss the old Paramount Theatre on Jasper avenue - and when Churchill square had grass and trees, way better! Regina still has a similar green central downtown park, Victoria park.

    I have traveled to Alberta frequently for work (being based in Houston within the O&G industry)…for me Edmonton is much more romantic and interesting city to visit/live than Calgary. However, Calgary is a much nicer place to live especially for those with a family. Edmonton is such a neat city (esp in summer) to visit but it’s sad seeing the many drug addicts and homeless around certain parts of the city. It’s also further from the Mountains than Calgary and doesn’t have as good of an airport to travel internationally. Finally the winters are worse in Edmonton due to the lack of the chinooks. That being said I really love Edmonton and prefer it over Calgary as a standalone city to visit in the summer. It has more character by far than Calgary.

    Calgary has got to be the greediest city in Canada for the way they treat their seniors is repulsive ...they force people to pay for these Green & Blue bins that they don't use, don't need, don't want or even asked for...seniors are going without their prescriptions and proper clothing in order to pay for this unfair service being forced on them...some don't have scraps to put in these bins, let alone yard waste...what a shame...
