The Indian city of Kolkata is home to one of the oldest tram lines in Asia. But after years of government neglect, the city’s once-expansive tramway network is on the verge of disappearing. A group of activists and tramway workers is fighting to preserve what’s left of the 140-year-old mass transit system.

@@indicraft1775 Kolkata trams are already in partial fulfillment of 2 out of the 3 requirements you mentioned
      1. Dedicated lanes- None of our tram lines gets dedicated lanes, but if the government is willing to refocus on public transit, it will be quite easy to get it on many major stretches of roads. Many of our arterial roads are very wide after decades of car-centric development. Maybe government buses can share those dedicated lanes, giving faster travel times to all transit users. Many bus routes on EM Bypass already operate as unofficial BRT routes with signal priority. Though it will be a challenge to get dedicated lanes implemented network-wide given it also passes through some narrow roads.
      2. AC trams- WBTC already has a few AC trams. If the government is willing to refocus on public transit, it will be easy to make it an all AC fleet
      3. Automated Ticketing - The ETMs (electronic Ticketing machines) currently being used by WBTC are actually quite easy to use. Though only conductors are allowed to use it at the moment, maybe the government can allow the passengers to use it in the future. There already have been reported cases of passengers using the ETMs, after the conductors behaved rudely with them.
Now if the list of requirements included things like stations/platforms, those would have been relatively hard to implement since our trams hug the road medians.
But yes convincing the state government to refocus on public transit seems to be first step. Even Central Government projects like metros are suffering, because state government doesn't care about public transit. For example, metro line 6 would have been operating till Science City/Mathpukur by now, had KMC built the third road bridge infront of Rudramani office a few months earlier. Line 6 was proposed in 2010-2012, but that road bridge still isn't ready

As someone fortunate enough to live by one of the very few surviving routes (Route 25), I take the tram whenever I can, even if it means waiting for 10 minutes, and wading through fast traffic to take the tram in the middle of the road. Because if I don't do my part, the system will be closed down.
Autos (tuk-tuks) and trams share the same narrow route for a large portion, and taking an auto ride is basically playing with your life, given how unruly the drivers are. It makes no sense to run autos along that route, and even in the presence of autos, the trams see decent ridership. More dedicated corridors and right of way will allow WBTC to run more frequent trams, faster service, and greater patronage. But there's no interest from the government.
Trams are cheaper as well. My commute will take 7 rupees, compared to 25 on an auto. They're very accessible as well, I see people with disabilities, and senior citizens easily board the tram, compared to the stepped ascent onto a bus.
I've always been fond, and proud of trams, from a very young age. I used to take the tram when i was in school, and now, I take it semi-regularly for my commute as well. I'm doing whatever I can, from my end, with the hope that the system becomes more functional, and lucrative in future.

This Old Pollution free system must be continued. Trams are the lifeline heritage of Calcutta. It must be restored and the bygone routes which were closed permanently should reopen. Calcutta must find a big solution for the no. of petrol cars and buses, these old smelly, noisy vehicles should be removed and Electric Trams and Electric buses alongwith hydrogen fuel cell buses should be introduced in a controlled manner, then Calcutta people will get a boom in the Tram Transport system and also the city's traffic pressure will decrease to a less pressure percent. Trams should be remodeled, no. of workshops should be increased in manufacturing Trams, Trams companies should tie with Alstom Like Companies for this Old Heritage System and I think Calcutta should be Like London.
