How to build a Catio (outside cat enclosure) DIY

- Step by step DIY video on how to build a catio for your cats using PVC pipe, vinyl coated metal fencing and a vinyl roof. It has 2 upper levels, a ramp, a tree, and is big enough for a person to go inside as well.
Note: You may want to use heavy duty UV resistant Zip Ties. I've been told they last longer than the standard ones I used. So far, mine are holding up fine, but time will tell. I didn't learn about them until I finished my catio.

I'm homeless right now but I'm in a program that will help me back on my feet, and imagining making this is a great motivator for me! This is both something I can do, and pretty cheap all things considered! Hoping to one day come back to this video when I have a home and kitties of my own. Thank you, sir!
You are very welcome. I pray the Lord will provide a home soon and some kitties to keep you company.
So happy to hear you are ready to get a brand new life! May god bless you!!
Goodluck my friend may Jehovah God bless you in your journey ❤ 💜🙏😊
I hope you are doing well in your program and are looking forward to meeting your goals. God bless you
I’m very sorry your government failed you, they spent 9 trillion dollars not including interest, chasing some guys with flip flops.
I’m very sorry, they could have built you a house , got you a job and helped with everything, but they insisted your not worth it
I love seeing "how to" projects that the average Joe and Josie with little to no experience can accomplish. Too many are done by experts with skills way beyond what the average person can accomplish. I plan to build a Catio similar to this. Thanks so much.😻
You are very welcome. Let me know how yours turns out!
Yes! Or they have insanely expensive tools that they think someone like myself with no DIY experience has! No I don’t have a wood cutter with a saw blade!

If you do decide to build one, it should be used for temporary purposes. I noticed our catio can get hot on the back porch. So we check on the pet often. Our pets only like it on cooler days.
Good point. I removed the lockable feature on the cat door because I read how the door can get stuck closed. I want my cats to be able to go in and out freely, depending on the weather. They don't seem to mind the heat, but they are not going out there very often now that it is cold.
I don't even have a cat, but I watched every second of this video.
Thanks, LOL!
Same here! Great content!
Thanks!
This is fabulous! thanks for sharing this with the rest of us cat appreciators!
Thank you. Glad to do it!

❤ I’m building one on my own. Unexpectedly inherited two orange females late 2022.
They were so soothing to my late husband in his last months. I want to give back to them the love they deserve.
And since I rescued two orange males. So this definitely will be a Must have for my growing family!
Yep, you definitely need a catio!

I don't even have a cat, but I was mesmerized by the whole build. Thanks for sharing. Lucky cats.
Thanks for watching!
I grew up in the 70s and 80s in
a village in Germany. We used
to have cats and we would let
them in and out all the time.
We had no catio. I think it was
the perfect way to live together.
Wonderful job! I kept repeating the following phrase as I watched you work so patiently, diligently, and lovingly: “The things we do for our cats.” I love my cats, and it is clear that you and your beautiful wife love yours. God bless you all! Thank you for sharing this project with us.
Thank you! Yes, we love our cats and they love the catio! You are very welcome. God bless you as well!
I had a female orange tabby with a pompom tail! I'm crying. Never saw another one before. My Gioia lived to be 18 1\2. She's been gone 11 years. I'm saving this video to build a catio.
Yes, those combinations are very rare for a cat. She is very affectionate, unlike most cats. It's a good thing she's little, because she is also a lap cat.

Good job RoBeaird! Using PVC was a great idea. You also did a great job explaining the entire project. Cheers.
Thanks! I just now subscribed to your channel. Your catio is amazing and your many videos are very interesting.
Thank you most kindly and welcome!@@RoBeaird
Thank you. May the Lord continue to inspire you to make beautiful creations for his awesome creatures!
It’s important to make sure the immediate space outside your catio attracts birds…so having a feeder or just some shrubs or perches makes a big difference. Also, think about the vantage and whether they can get sunshine to bathe in, protection from cold etc.
Birds still come around; In fact, some have found their way into the catio, since the fencing has 1 and 1/2 size square holes. The catio faces the sun, but their platforms are in the shade because of the roof.
@@RoBeairdI love birds! Your catio is awesome except the screen needs to protect the birds. But the catio is impressive.
I plan to adopt two kittens this spring. I planned to harness train them so they might enjoy the outdoors, but only when I take them out. I could actually build this myself so they would have safe access to the out doors, all day long. Thanks for this.

You are a great and truly caring cat Dad. That is a wonderful structure and I'm sure the kitties are enjoying it, especially when the weather turns cooler. Now all they need is a water fountain on the deck to stay hydrated.
Thanks! They can go inside the house for food and drink and the litter box.
One thing that could be done quite easily is to simply drill a hole in the roof and place a bowl under it. It would be re-filled naturally every time it rained so that would make it nice and easy.
Great idea!
You and your wife are amazing! Great work! We have never seen anything like this! Thank you both so very much for your hard work and generosity!!!!
Thanks for the kind words! Your encouragement blessed me!
Thank you so much for your comment! You were blessed way before us - but thank you so very much for letting us know that we encouraged you! Will cats slip through screen with only zip ties?
Thank you so much. I am going to build one for my cats. I have 4. Your catio looks so neat. 😍

You, sir, are a friend to cats everywhere.
Thank you. I hope my video inspires more cat lovers to build a catio.
Brilliant idea using the plastic pipes. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
I love your design! And I equally adore your sweet, good natured Tennessee soul! We lived in Murfreesboro for about 6 years. Tennessee is beautiful and the people there are the best I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you for posting this video. God bless you and your lovely wife!
Thanks, Beverly! May the Lord bless you richly as you continue to be a blessing to others, even if it's to be a missionary for Him in another state, LOL!
@@RoBeaird thank you!
We used the largest size dog crate outside our cat window, but had to add smaller mesh because the Carolina wrens, on the lookout for protected nesting locations, kept coming in through the grid and then being "escorted" into the house by the cats. None were killed, but getting them out again was no picnic. Your cats are lucky to have such excellent DIY "staff."
Oh, wow! I would love to see your catio. You can show it to us by joining my Facebook group, DIY Project Station: facebook.com/groups/882510523338538
What a reasonably priced, well put together project idea. 10/10 you're doing cat lovers (and their cats) everywhere a service!
Thank you, happy to share the idea!
This is awesome!! Thank you for the video and all of the explanations. We are screening in a friend's apartment patio this weekend for her cats to be able to go outside. We are also using PVC for the framing. It is lighter weight than wood and "should be" easier to put together. :) I like the climbing ideas too as that will be our next step of the Catio in a month or so.
Thanks for watching. Let me know how your catio turns out. You'll love it and so will your cats!

Marvellous, simple, durable, minimal tools required, and easily scalable.
Thank you! Are you planning on building one?
.@@RoBeaird Seriously, seriously considering. Your video is a great teaching tool. What’s particularly great is the dimensions aren’t fixed, and the place I am considering is taller and shallower, but it doesn’t matter. I have even less work to do than you, because my project won’t need a roof (it’s under my broad eaves). I particularly liked that you fitted a door in your project, since that was something I expected would be too big a challenge for me.
Cool! Let me know how yours turns out by joining my Facebook group, DIY Project Station: facebook.com/groups/882510523338538
Hello from Australia, that is a very nice and simple catio, thanks for sharing, bless you and your wife.
Greetings from Tennessee! Thanks for watching. God bless you as well!
I don’t own a cat, but I watched the whole thing and want to build one. You did an excellent job!
Wow, thanks, LOL!
Fantastic idea. Lots of work but seems like a fun project. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you. It was quite a project but we enjoy watching our cats enjoy it.
This was such an unexpected JOY!!! I have had a metal frame, 5'x3', for several years, but didn't know how to convert it to a catio. My poor cats- 3 of them- have been waiting. You just solved all my "but how do I" problems. My thanks, & also from Pixie, Foxy, & Oliver! (Sub'd, too!)
You are very welcome, Patricia. Let me know how yours turns out. Tell Pixie, Foxy & Oliver I said Hello!
@@RoBeaird We live in South Florida, USA. Subtropical climate eats unpainted wood, so I had been wracking my brain to figure out ramps & climbing spots that weren't wood. This is a perfect solution for our climate, & I remeasured that metal shipping frame & it's a bit bigger than I thought, 4' deep instead of 3'. That's a lot better volume! 5' wide, 6'6" tall on the house window side, slanting down to 4'6" on the outer side. I've purchased a 50' roll of 1" hole chicken wire, & 200 strong zip ties to start. A pvc shoe rack I already have will be repurposed to have more climbing& resting spots, will be drilling some holes to screw it's joints more firmly together & zip tied to the frame. That, plus a roof, screen & ramp (Your method, of course!) SHOULD finish it out. I've already picked out a nice, stout branch for claw sharpening. 🐈 They observe from the window, not yet knowing how lucky they'll be!
Great ideas! Yep, our cats were very interested in mine while I was building it, LOL!

I don't have a cat but I want to build this for my sister in law. I absolutely love this design and materials.
Thanks! Go for it!
Loved the design. If you can’t build it with zip ties and PVC, you don’t need it!☺️
Thanks!
beautiful I wish you could build one for my cats! your cats are lucky!
Thanks. They certainly enjoy it!
Really nice for the kitties.
Thanks!
Always dream of building a cat outdoor patio for cats. This is one neatest and simple DYI way to construct, and it is very tasteful. Thank you for sharing
Thank you! You are very welcome.
I had one when i was living in Farmville, Va 25 yrs ago. I got up to go to work and there was a big black snake standing 4 ft high balanced on the rear of it's body looking over my porch railing at my cats.
Yikes! I bet you were glad you had a catio to protect your cats (or to protect the snake, LOL!)
What a great project, thanks for sharing. Well done!
Thank you!
Thank you for this and for your happy attitude. It made me feel encouraged that I perhaps could build something for our cats so they can also enjoy the outdoors safely. What a treasure you are! Thank you!!
PS…I was thinking the opposite of one commenter on the number of zip ties. Lol! I was thinking…I’ll have to place those every 3” for Loki, our escape artist kitty haha.
Thank you! You can do it. You and your cats will enjoy it. Let me know how yours turns out.

I love the fact that this build is "apartment/rental friendly." You can build it and take it with you. I'm going to make one (maybe 2) for my cats.
I can take them apart when we move to our new home 🏡.
I don't have a deck, so I will be using sturdy tent hook stakes.
Great idea!

@RoBeaird I will post pictures after I get it done.
I'm in the planning stages right now so I can determine how much I need in supplies.
Have fun!
DYI is always GREAT...I know your fur babies is greatful...🥰
Thanks! Yes, they love it.
I love that y’all took the time to care for your fur family! Thank you
GOD for ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL!
Amen to that!
I love this idea. What considerations would I need to make if I needed to double or triple the size of the enclosure? My two cats are used to free-roaming in Brooklyn back yards (one is feral, so she really needs the freedom), but we are planning to move to a rural area soon. I'm too worried about wild animals to let them roam, but I don't want them to feel shorted on space. This would serve as a temporary enclosure while I build a 30x30 garden that I'll enclose, so the pvc is perfect, but I'm just not sure what I'll need to take into account structural to make it larger. Thanks for the video!
Will the catio be free standing or attached to the house like mine? If free standing, I would upgrade to 1 inch pvc for stability.
Yes it would be freestanding. Thanks!! @@RoBeaird
OK, let me know how it turns out!

This is a brilliant improvised solution. I’d still be a bit considered the little rascals might try to squirm their way out, but I’m sure you’ve thought of that and ‘zip-tied’ every avenue of escape.
Thanks! So far, they haven't escaped.
This! This is how you protect your cats from wild animals and roads, and save endangered bird species from cats! Cats are NOT wild animals, they should Not be running loose like wild animals. Theres no such thing as a "feral" cat, because cats are NOT feral!
Wrong
They should not have to be living outdoors, but millions upon millions ARE with no homes due to people's irresponsibility.
You people are insane. All animals started out as wild animals and they were domesticated by humans and then humans started crossbreeding them. Cats are originally wild animals and they are more than capable of surviving outside on their own for years. There are millions of cats roaming around because they reproduce quickly.
@@Kit1128 why not? Cats are way more competent than any other pet. If anything they are a threat for the local wildlife since they are very competent predators.
@@chavaspada I spend a lot of my days working with the feral outdoor cats feeding and TNR. Horrendous things happen to them, not to mention getting hit, which is extremely common.. I've adopted several & in generally they have no interest in going back outside. They are domesticated animals and it's only because people are too lazy or cheap to have their pets fixed. Would you like to be out there 24/7 living with fleas, worms, and undiagnosed medical conditions? Most people wouldn't last a month
youtube just let me know about this video! tahnk you so much for sharing! this is perfect! and really simple! i usually see stunning catios but whithout tools it's impossible to put them in place! thank you a lot! honestly! congratulations!

I rarely comment on videos but I just needed you to know that this was very helpful! I altered the dimensions a bit because I made a sort of shelter for the outside cats I feed. This was significantly easier to make than other catio DIY tutorials I attempted with wood. Thank you so much!

From your Georgia neighbor, kudos! This is an awesome idea! I do not have cats for the moment (I have some strays that I feed from time to time), but in the event I decide to own some in the future, a catio is on the list of must haves! Great video!
Hello, neighbor! Thanks for watching. Georgia is beautiful, especially around Brasstown Bald Mountain. We stayed in a cabin with a private dock on Lake Chatuge last September. Had a wonderful time there.

wonderful , really nice.. these cats must be in cat heaven here.. so nice of you to make this for them

Love the idea and the ease of construction. But most of all, I love that the Lord was brought into the project and video. Hallelujah! He deserves all our praise. Thank you for pointing to Jesus AND a great idea for us cat lovers.
Thank you, and yes, to God be the glory! I couldn't do it without him. I depend on him for every DIY project I do. God bless you!
I couldn't stop smiling through this! It is just what I need. Thank you !👏🏻
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
This is very cool and clearly the occupants agree!
If I do one, I'd make the roof a clear type, and only halfway across, so the cats can get sun - very important.
Thanks. Good idea with the clear roof. My catio faces the sun all afternoon. The opaque roof gives them shade but half of the catio still gets sun if they want to go to that side.
You and your wife are such good caretakers for your cats.😻
Thanks!
I made a cario for my daughters apartment balcony using cedar wood 2 years ago. It was a covered balcony so I didn’t need the roof panels to keep off rain. Indoor cats need some outdoor space to get fresh air and sunshine. It also keeps them entertained. Indoor cats get bored. Thanks for the tip on using plumbing PVC pipe. I will certainly make a catio like yours next time I have a cat. It really looks good on your deck and doesn’t require much maintenance.

And of course, the extra cost of all the band aids needed from cutting the wire mesh. Thanks for the great video.
Yep, LOL! You saw my cuts and band aids, didn't you?
@@RoBeaird Yes sir, we're about the same age, so I've worn my fair share of them as well. Gray duct tape when there wasn't one available. A quick question, if you don't mind. In one of your videos, you spoke of the "dust of your Rabbi." Are you a messianic Jew, a born-again believer, or one who does not yet see the Lord Jesus Christ as the Messiah?
A born-again believer, my friend. The reference to "the dust of your Rabbi" was to illustrate the importance of following closely after Christ. Hopefully, if you watch my entire series, beginning with the first session, you will see my passion for pursuing Jesus and wanting to help others come to know him, too. God bless you!
@@RoBeaird Thank you, I suspected as much, but we are commanded to test the spirits. Covered in the dust of our Savior because we walk behind him, following in His footsteps, as it were.
I reference Micah 6: 8 in my mind quite often.
It's always a blessing to meet a brother in Christ, even from a distance. I will watch your series, and, when you have the time, go to the red dot to the left there and watch 1 or 2 of the short videos, but specifically pay attention, if you will, to the "Show more," it will lead you the what the Lord has led me to do also, Letters of Truths.
I would appreciate any comments you might have.
Stay in the Word my brother, every day, reach out to all that will listen, some may actually hear His voice.
Thanks for watching my series and I will check out your videos as well! Yes, we need our Daily Bread to nourish our souls.
This is a great idea! Just make sure to get furniture grade PVC as regular PVC is not UV resistant and will discolor and become brittle over time.
Well done, I enjoyed watching you making your catio. I’m gonna start mine following the same steps.
Cheers

Nice idea with using the PVC pipes. I think it would have probably been a bit easier for you and a bit tidier if you had some T shaped fittings but that would have taken needing to know that the roof needed more support in advance and as you said in the video that was an 'on the spot' realization.
This is epic, thanks bro, my cats are gonna go crazy for this

I dont even have a cat, but I found your video very thorough and informative. You take your time and show a very easy to follow process, with peaceful music. This was a very relaxing video as I'm drinking my theraflu while in bed, recovering from a mild flu. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. May the Lord grant you a speedy recovery!
Make sure you use UV stabilized tie wraps otherwise they'll start snapping in a year or two. Great video and catio. We loved it!
Thanks. Yep, I didn't know about the better zip ties until you and many others told me about it in the comments, LOL.
Amazing work! Thank you for sharing your project with us. The kitties look so happy and relaxed outside. And your yard is absolutely stunning!
Thanks!
Wow. I like how u showed step by step. It wasn't crazy expensive. The cats ❤ it. Thank u 4 sharing.
You're very welcome!
i loved this my most favorite diy catio yet
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Our climate is different. We have used zip ties for outdoor projects and they get brittle and break over time. I suggest you periodically check yours and replace any after a year or so. Maybe you will be lucky and they last a lot longer for you. I know how resourceful cats are at being escape artists. I love how your catio turned out. Great design and your cats look happy.❤️
Thanks! I will keep an eye on the zip ties. Good thing I used a lot of them!
Your way to attach the roof is awesome! Our cats would love this. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Let me know how yours turns out. You can do it. I'm not a professional builder and this was the first time I built something with PVC. Yes, your cats would love it. Ours sure do. 🙂
