AI had nothing to do with it. Just an artist who cared a lot. That's why it's so beautiful.
Check out Motion lab - our upcoming reference footage catalogue: www.animatorguild.com/motion-lab.html
Motion Lab looks like it will be a great resource. Very excited to see this.
This reminds me of Robert Valley + Troy Browne !
I made a hand drawn chalk animation back in uni and this is like.....that on steroids! Wish I'd have seen this back them, would have blown my mind even more than it is now!
Yes! The textures and colours really remind me of chalk drawings! Well observed
It is splendid. Jacques is an atypical artist in France. In this excerpt he says that he is nothing, like before birth and after death, that he became someone when he understood that he was nothing, nothing...
That's why this animation work is so abstract and in construction of something.
i lost my words when i watched this! thank you for bringing attention to other animators that deserve a bigger reach
It saddens me to imagine that GOVO must have spent years mastering this craft and some AI in the near future will unethically steal it and churn out videos in this style within minutes.
Yes, it's terrible, and everyone is waking up to the fact that it is terrible. That's why Italy has blocked AI and France, Germany and Ireland are soon to follow.
In the space of a year, generative AI has earned a dogs**t reputation. Years from now, no one will want to admit that they took part in the shameful AI data looting.
You are greatly underestimating this guy's creativity and overestimating AI's potential. But I don't see how it's a bad thing if an algorithm will eventually be capable of this sorta stuff
@@t111ran3 Spoken like someone who knows nothing
@@newtybot can you enlighten me, I will be very glad.
I'm sorry to come off as ignorant, it's just the way I see it. Ai is very weak in comparison to humans and the progress is close to the slowing down phase. Again, it's just my opinion after using AI's
@@t111ran3 TL;DR It's the complete opposite of what you said, now more than ever it's moving at incredibly fast paces and just yesterday a text to video model came out capable of doing similar things and more.
This looks similar to content aware scaling. There is propably a way to use the drawn lines as a guide to warp the video footage. Then the different colors of the dance animation are used as masks to combine multiple variations of warped video footage.
funfact! at the part you talk about around 8:30 it's supposed to represent a baby inside a womb! it's because the lyrics talk about birth at that part
The start reminds me of those videos where they pour different paints on one another and then they make cool patterns.
I know what you mean!
This animation is god level, but at the same time, the music does so much as well. I don't know a word of French but this song helped get me through a really rough time in my life. The animation is like an unexpected dessert and I love it.
therapist: titan howard doesn't exist he can't hurt you
titan howard : 4:02
also you cant look over the fact that the animation was matched with the music itself so well
The king returns
Damn! The video was so very well animated! Wish I could make it someday... And sir Howard, thank you for your initiative for Motion Lab! I really was in need for some reference footages! Thank you!
At 13:09 the video is from a music video, Saint Claude by Christine and the Queens who is also french! Gave me a little bit of a nostalgic feeling.
this animation reminds me of time lapse video of molds.... like slime molds... but its so pretty and mesmerizing and clearly an expressionist portrayal of someone dancing
The beginning looks like part of Yoshitaka Amano's "1001 Nights" (which I have uploaded on my channel) -- although I think Mike Smith actually did some of the animation for it.
Those wild bio membranes dance and flow so nice its wicked impressive : D
Finally found someone talking about this. I went nuts with this video a while ago. Such a brilliant piece of art.
for thoses wondering at 13:09, the reference is from christine and the queen video clip of saint claude :)
As a capoeira and fx artist. This was amazing you got my subscription. I'm just as excited as you were. 😍😍😍
Thanks for drawing my attention to this work by Govo. I had not been aware of Govo's animation before. It's very interesting ! Some of the wild , flowing distortions (and attendant effects animation) inspired by the movement of the dancer remind me a bit Ryan Woodward's animation "Thought of You". (you've seen it , right ?) . It also reminds somewhat of animation by another Ryan: Ryan Larkin, his film "Street Musique" , made at the NFB .
I agree with you that it looks like he may be using TVPaint (those brush strokes!) . Ultimately it's the result that gets on screen that matters , not the software that was used , but I'd be interested to know if he is using TVPaint.
So great to see you explore and break down GOVO's work! It really is a unique style and the way he emphasizes motion is captivating!
Also excited for motion labs, really impressed with all the work you and your team are putting into it!
Thanks man, Your feedbakc has been so helpful to us developing it
For animation openings and commercials it is a perfect animation style.
Thankyou Howard! I will follow your channel! I love to watch your passion for animation. Mmm i used to be exactly like that. When I was 20.20years ago.iv been developing my painting This whole time. And Im planing to make animations out from my paintings. Animation is the best! Okey looking forward to watch more of your videos
Looks like he cut parts of a live action model and morphed and molded it with chalked up style on it really cool stuff.
Man that was sooooo cool, and again thanks for me getting to know about this awesome Animator
that is probably the coolest piece of work i've seen in a while. i mean, wow!
The red clip of the dancer is Christine and the Queens another french singer, like Jacques.
" all your favorite animator uses reference" and then there is Okiura that can do the most realistic character acting without reference🐐
Amazing, I always have huge respect for traditional animation. Bravo 👏 👏
amazing stuff!
thanks for the insights!!
I'm barely starting out in animation, I mean I've done it for a bit but not necessarily that well. Seeing stuff like this is just amazing, and overwhelming at the same time
I can imagine this could be doable by rotoscoping over manually warped video; but those test videos there suggest he probably really did freehanded it
BRAVO! Great Video appreciating the craft and animator!
I was watching the video and I realized that the same movements are repeated for every verse and every chorus it transitions into a clearer shape. You can tell by the repeated crouching ball form that repeats at 0:33, 1:04, and 1:38 in the actual animation. I feel like the repetition gives it a sense of overarching unity and also makes it an easier time for the animators.
I saw this clip when it was released, it's mezmerising ^^ i love it.
If you want more examples of this look into 60s-70s experimental animations,
This is amazing. Bought the duo pack yesterday. Will buy more next time. Literally did OT at work just to buy this. Thank you. It will age like wine.
thank you man I'm honored that your OT wages went to this 👊 respect
Amazing analysis ❤
Also the motionlab idea is quite a good idea. I also think people should be more aware of the Eadward Muybridges books on human and animal locomotion.
ho man! thats so sick and the animation lab is a idea of genius like woah!!
I've just been starting into the world of animation and seing this was truly orgasmic
Reminiscent of Anthony F Sheppard. 10:18 Id bet he’s using StableDiffusion and EBSyrnh to get that effect. Like doing a style transfer to his frames. You can even pick out the non temporal cohesion that’s associated with style transfer. 12:40 he’s definitely use it EbSynth
Hmmm... This kinda makes me wanna see you analyze JP animators- Masanobu Hiraoka and Hiromatsu Shuu.
Specifically,
Masanobu Hiraoka maybe the MV for Dios' Dark Room. Or maybe the 9th ED for Chainsaw Man.
Hiromatsu Shuu would be 5th ED for Chainsaw Man and also for Da Wang Rao Ming.
I'm a big long time fan of Masanobu,
And I have an unedited Hiromatsu Shuu analysis video sitting on my computer...
@@HowardWimshurst Well shoot. A few steps ahead already. Noice.
Forever ago MotionLab was a giant book of camera reel pictures.
this is so inspiring!
The beginning reminded me of Norman McClaren. Canadian animator who used that style to animate stuff for the Oscar Peterson Trio
For sure, he pioneered abstract music-driven animation
i speak french and i can tell the song is fire too
I don't speak French and I can tell the song is fire haha
But really... what is he saying? 😂
@HowardWimshurst 0:33
this is the lyrics;
Nothing, nothing
Nothing, nothing
Nothing, nothing
Nothing, nothing
Nothing to the corners
Nothing that scares me
Nothing that exasperates me
Today I do nothing
I am part of nothing
A bit like before birth
Or like after death
I've become someone since I realized that deep down I am
Nothing, nothing
Nothing, nothing
Nothing is good enough
Nothing in my mind, nothing on my computer
Today I know nothing
I don't know what's coming
A bit like before birth
Or like after dessert
The glass is full since I realized it's full of
Nothing, nothing
Nothing, nothing
Nothing that intervenes
Nothing that bothers me, nothing that itches
Today I am nothing
Nor the emptiness I contain
But I'm aware of my absence
It makes me feel better when I think about it
I finally changed the day I realised that it doesn't change
History repeats itself endlessly
Like we're not moving forward
Until we accept the importance of the void
That binds us, that separates us
At the centre of the vortex a balance
That never goes out of balance
As soon as we accept the importance of the void
That breaks us, that repairs us
History repeats itself endlessly
As if we were not moving forward
Until we accept the importance of the void
That binds us, that separates us
At the centre of the vortex a balance
That never goes out of balance
As soon as we accept the importance of the void
That breaks us, that repairs us
the parts that look to have reference textures appear to be ai aided. I know that you can draw a cartoon distorted image of a cat and tell ai to fill in your outline with realistic cat texture.. it creates catoon shaped but realistic textured cats (as an example) - dont know if this is what they did, but it reminds me of it so much
it's just bad timing that an amazing hand-made piece of art comes out while this AI buzz is in the news, and people falsely accredit it to AI
Holy COW, this is mind blowing!!!!!!!!
You should check out the Lackadaisy pilot that just dropped. While this an interesting study of motion I really think the above mentioned pilot deserves a watch
Beautiful
Photoshop. I've done something similar with texture brushes and video footage that was deformed along side being in fish eye which then he does large movements and adjustments in slow movements
A lot of the subtle effects can be done After Effects. BTW, I'm not saying he used After Effect, but I have experience creating similar effects with After Effects some 20 yrs ago.
You know- I remember seeing this video from Randowis where there’s just one split frame where he uses this technique to show a hand pulling out some guns and I thought it was so cool.. but sad that it was only in that one second long shot… and then THIS pops up.
Fantastic stuff dude, now on my list for favorite animators :)

Animation is all about doing the impossible baby!
th first thime this jacques video comes out it blow my mind
That's some real "National Film Board Of Canada's golden age" shit right there. Looks nice.
ahaa my man you know what's good
hunchback of notre dame vibes.
Will Motion Lab be sold separately or included for anyone that bought either Getting Started or Mastering course, or will it be free for everyone?
It will be a library of reference packs. Many reference videos inside of a pack. Each pack can be bought separately.
French music goes so hard
dang
time to watch again the wall
I gotta say you were incorrect about 1 of the software that you discounted as a raster capable software but I can tell you was wrong about it because it is not a widely available software Too use.
You talking about ToonBoom? Sure it's capable of Raster. It's just not likely that he would have chosen it. Wanna put a bet on it? I bet you he didn't use ToonBoom.
Looks like it was rotoscope and he stylized it heavily to give it this looks and feel.
The blobs also reminded me of muscle groups
You should see Bleach "Yamamoto vs Yhwach"
I don't understand why you said he couldnt have used Toon Boom because it has textures and bitmap drawings. Toon Boom can be used with bitmaps, it even imports photoshop textures, paper textures, etc.
i guess you could.. if you wanted to..
But toonboom as a whole software deosn't really appeal to animators who are going after a traditional look
WD mate ❤❤
3:43 Nakamura did???
do you know how high you have to be to create something so unique and beautiful like this.
hahaha
You don't have to be high to create awesome things. Don't be fooled.
@@voice_0f_reason chill out he was joking
@@voice_0f_reason I appreciate the feedback but yes i was just joking. Glad to know there are some sober people in the world still :P .. thats also a joke.
The animation would be perfect if he hadn't added textures of the reference to the brush strokes.
First rule of Animation
Nothing is impossible
OMG....🔥🔥🔥, I AM FROM INDIA...😘
Fastest click 😂
that was fast
I just think he's a really good painter
It’s feels like Rotoscope witchcraft 😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🫠
its just retroscoping mate. one of those LSD clips.
cant believe he has only 233 followers on vimeo
hidden gem
damn.. it’s like after effects 😭
Fannyballs!
You’ll never see this on A.I platforms
I feel like this definitely has AI stuff in there with the image integration
You don't need AI to do that. I'd be very disapointed if it was...
He's been using this technique way before all this AI stuff came out so I don't think so
It has absolutely nothing to do with AI
It's okay to be wrong.
govo has 10 year old vids w the same technique. unlikely
I saw some comments questioning wether or not there's AI involved.. We see how much work the artist has put into it, sketching, planning out, studies etc and it *COULD* be possible AI or something of the sort is the "mystery mask technique" mentioned in the video, or that it also could just have been done manualy with something like After Effects or whatever, there seems to be so little information about this artist online that we can't tell for sure. And *IF* there was some use of AI, would that invalidate ALL of this work? specially that *if* they ever used it, that would only be a a part of the process and not the thing as a whole.
I generally dislike AI for all the reasons everybody knows, the theft, the ethics, how ppl get so annoying and condesending about it amidst problems and issues it already is causing etc BUT it also *can* do some interesting stuff I'm not saying that the artist wouldn't do that effect themselves or that it would be impossible for a person to do it or come up with it, its just that its A possibility that was just completelly disregarded ):
The very video showing Govo's process has "Generative Art and Processing" as a tag on Vimeo which doesn't necessarily mean AI but mean that they used some software or whatever as part of the process its a vague term, idk if those tags are generated by the platform or if its a system like Steam or whatever, Ai has been around for a lot longer than most ppl think since early 2010's that it could be possible, regardless this discourse aversing AI is starting to become almost as obnoxious as the discourse pro AI itself, there's good reason AI has done more harm than good thus far and has the promise of doing more harm in the near future, though seems like most ppl don't think AI could ever be used as just another tool as most of things we see are annoying ppl with inflated egos using it and demeaning any artist that are either opposed or that just don't want to use it
I can hear that you rerecorded that
i put the final edit together from a laptop in Bali
What's so impossible about it? Its just random.
Nothing impossible with animation
mo cap with filters and drawing on top (rotoscoping?)
Haters say it was Ai
That's just french animators
I'm not sure what you think "fractal" means, but using it to describe those shapes in a video riddled with other intentionally vague misuses of language really destroys the "natural flow" & "energy" you're trying to communicate.
Govo probably used some kind of AI on it 🤔
I can tell Govo is its own AI
It's so sad that you assume that
It's okay to be wrong.
Jaques is pronounced Jocks
thanks
looks like ai
It's exaggerated rotoscope, no? He went abstract with it to a degree, but he's simply traced the video with his own feel is what I'm seeing.
try "simply tracing" a video and see if it turns out like that.
there's more to it
Absurd
