Thanks for a well thought out and very detailed review Dustin. I bought the flash yesterday for my Sony set up.
Nice! Enjoy
As usual, an informative review. Thanks for your posting.
You're welcome.
Thanks for the information Dustin! This has been very helpful. I'm thinking of picking one of these up to have a quick and reliable flash. The one's I've used in the past have been really slow on the recycle times, but I've heard good things about this one and all this info was a big help. Thanks again!
It's a really solid choice. I like them a lot
Thank you for this splendid review Dustin. It's convinced me to finally upgrade my 'decent but not great' yongnuo flashes. I've ordered one of these godox but i suspect another one or two will follow soon!
Enjoy. I think you'll find a quality difference.
Thank you so much for being so thorough, always. You're the man!
My pleasure!
Dustin, beautiful family, the boys look like you and your daughter looks just like her mother. The other downside generally with the lithium battery is no external battery pack. Some regular flashes have the port on them to add an external battery back, which will give you almost instant recycle time, but as you said a second lithium battery could probably outlast the flash even with a battery pack. The v1 looks interesting and you showed what could be done with the dreaded on top of the camera perspective due to the wider dispersion pattern.
I wonder if a modifier could be added like some of the soft boxes that would allow you to use this on top of a camera just to see what type of light you could get due to the larger surface area of the round head. Ken Wheeler, The angry photographer, showed his invention for doing this, but like almost always no pictures with results. Great job Dustin as always.
The quality of the light is really quite good, so I think it should work well with modifiers.
Great informative review Dustin. Thumbs up😃
You're welcome!
Fantastic Review Dustin
Thank you!
This was an especially comprehensive and well-done review. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was hired as a second shooter for a Sweet Sixteen event near Midlothian turnpike here in Virginia. The primary shooter had his set up for a flash unit requiring changing of batteries. To make a long story short - he had to change batteries at least three times and my GODOX V1 still had all the bars in full display at the end of the night. When the kids were dancing I kept going around the dance floor shooting at rapid fire. The prime told me that he was going to purchase two GODOX V1s. Well I'm going to purchase another myself where I'd like to use for back lighting, rim , or hair lighting on occasions. By the way I never needed more than 1/64th power for the area and I wash shooting.
They really are excellent flashes, and I have found that their built-in lithium batteries definitely outlast flashes powered by AAs.
thank you for these amazing honest review, exactly the kind of guide i need for future purchases
Glad it was helpful!
I received mine a few weeks ago and used it for a few events and I really like it! One very important feature is that it can shoot at 1/256th of power! The only downside I found though is that it seems to be slower to "wake up" after it went in sleeping mode. That freeked me out a bit in the first event I shot with it!
I hadn't noticed that about sleeping, but I haven't shot events with it where that might happen. Yes, the 1/256th power is good for shooting up close.
ThAnk you for all the advice!
You're welcome!
Just bought it!!! Can't wait to try it! Built quality is very nice and the accessories are good quality too! I've heard is better than profoto!
I'm quite impressed with the flash.
Really good review! Subscribed! :)
Thank yoy
Thanks for this video- I am new to the Godox brand & could not figure out how to take the batter out! The instructions were useless. By watching how you did it I finally got it out! Thank you! :)
I've been in a similar boat before with some products. You get the strangest things out of reviews sometimes!
Hey mr abbot keep doing ur videos in 4k i have a Quantum dot tv from Samsung and ur videos looks outstanding. Keep up the good work thanks for this godox video Uraaaa💪
That's nice to hear.
Thank you! An amazing little light..deciding between this or an ad200 tomorrow. Thanks for the review!
Both are nice lights.
Good review Dustin: thanks a lot. I used to own a Metz AF-64 Digital and used it with my Olympus EM1 mark II. When I moved over to Sony I went for a cheaper Neewer 880S (GN60), which is pretty good. I do like the look of this Godox V1, though. From your images, it looks as if it would suit my longer range close up shots of butterflies better than my 880S.
I'm pretty impressed with the quality of light for a speedlight.
Thanks for the great review !~
You're welcome.
I've been happily surprised at how accurate the ttl function is on this unit. With every other flash, I've had to compensate in some way to reduce hot spots. Usually by reducing EV by up to -1. Not so much with this one. Combined with the TCM button on the trigger. I can quickly fine tune my output without the necessity of a light meter. Considering this is 1/3rd the cost of a Profoto. I'm very happy.
The TTL function is very strong, actually.
Thank you for the review. I just moved to Sony and was looking to order.
It's definitely my new choice for Sony flashes.
Thanks for another great review Dustin! I will definitely be upgrading to these bad boys. One thing I am hoping is true based on my research is that this unit will work seamlessly with the US Flashpoint strobes that I currently own. Anyone else looking to purchase be sure to use his referral purchase links! Cheers!
I haven't tested any Flashpoint strobes, but I understand they are essentially the same thing.
Thank you for a decent review!
You're welcome.
Hello Dustin. Nice review of a very nice product. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and I’m loving it.
I already own three of the AD200s, and I got me a couple of the H200Rs to go with them. Buying the V1 has given me the third option of a round head.
And I’ve made sure to get three of the AK-R1s. Awesome accessories.
Performance wise, I can’t fault the V1.
Fortunately for us in the UK, we can purchase a spare battery either directly from Godox, or from PixaPro, which is the brand name similar to Flashpoint.
I have used the V1 on-camera as a stand-alone, and on-camera as Master in a wireless setup.
One thing I still haven’t figured out.
When I use the V1 as on-camera master in a wireless setup, I have the option of setting it to flash AND trigger slaves, or to trigger slaves only (I.e. V1 not to flash).
In a situation where I set the v1 to flash and to also trigger slaves, what Group is the on-camera V1 assigned to? And how do you adjust the power?
It seems I’m unable to set it in one of the three flash modes (eTTL, Manual, or Multi).
Does anyone know how to please? It’s not in the User Guide.
Thanks Dustin and all.
I'm going to look at the new Ad200 Pro in August. Looks interesting. You're running a LOT of lights there. What are you lighting?
@@DustinAbbottTWI lol year, a whole heap of lights. I shoot portraiture, and i love shooting with artificial light, challenging as it often is. I love the challenge. And i like being prepared for a variety of situations. Recently, I had a photoshoot of a group of six women (my wife inclusive), a Charity organisation that they run. They wanted a variety of shots, and my lighting stood up to the ocassion.
Excellent review, thank you. I've had to subscribe!
Welcome on board.
Thank you for this great video. I just found out about this flash and was wondering if I should get one. You helped me make my decision. Very informative without a bunch of tech stuff and personal experiences. Thanks.
Glad I could help!
Thank you Mr Abbott
No problem!
Nice review Dustin, as usual. Have you tested the Off-Camera TTL function? I usually it to be wildly inconsistent with Godox flashes, with metering up and down all over the place.
I did (using the X-ProS). I actually got really good results.
hello everyone, does the v1-s AF assist works with the Sony a7iii in low light conditions?
New to Sony and been flash unit shopping, you sold me on this one.
Enjoy. They are great flash units.
THANK you!!
Absolutely!
Wonderful video. Thank you so much
You're welcome.
Thank You so much for this video! IT WAS AWESOME!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice review 😉
Thank you 😁
Hi Dustin. Thks for your great work. I'm a long time follower.
I recently bought this flash and i like it but i have an issue that i've seen no one talk about it. I use it in a sony a7 iii and because the mode button is the main wheel of the flash i'm constantly changing the mode from manual to ttl with my face while shooting. Because of that i have missed a lot of shots because its constantly changing everytime i put the camera in my face to shoot.
It's a nightmare. Have you experienced this any time?
Thanks justin for this review. Just a question, can you confirm that the shoe is in metal or plastic. As i saw some pictures with a metal shoe but i can see it on your video. I have a godox v860iis and the shoe is a real cheap plastic and broke two time already...please godox don't make plastic shoe!
Great review!
Is it prone to overheating like most other speedlights are? Have you tested it's overheating limits? i.e. how many full power shots before heat protection kicks-in? (assuming there is some kind of overheating protection in this flash)
I've never had a problem with overheating on it, but no, I don't torture test them.
Hey Dustin, I've been struggling with the weak AF pattern of the V860II in very low light (event work) how do you find the AF assist pattern on the V1?
Hi Michael, I haven't needed it enough to really comment. Perhaps someone else can.
Thanks for your review, Dustin, I always learn a lot. I’m brand-new to flash photography and I’m looking for an on-camera flash for my Sony A7III to use for outdoor night time shoots and nightlife stuff in dark clubs. Would you recommend this Godox? Thanks!
I'm happily using it right now.
good review... when I need a new speed light im sure to get one of these.. I use a basic godox tt600 at the moment which is not very realible but it was only £60 pounds.. this looks a lot lot more realible...
It's a really great flash, actually.
Nice review. See if you can also do one with accessories AK-R1 Kit. especially how to use different diffusers(both indoor and outdoor). Also what is your favorite combination of stacking multiple diffusers together.
No promises, but if I can fit it in at some point, I will
Thanks, Dustin.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this really helpful review. I’m considering getting this as a 3rd flash to supplement my Canon RT II flashes & replace my Yn transmitter. Would I be able to trigger them with this on my 5DIV using the radio transmitter function? Thanks again. Your reviews are the most intelligible & complete!
I haven't tested them on Canon, so I don't know that. I don't know if the two wireless systems (Canon and Godox) are compatible.
How did you combine the Rotolight AEOS or was it just used as constant light source?
I used it as a constant light source, not remotely triggered as the two wireless systems aren't compatible (to my knowledge).
Awesome review! Does the af light assist works with the sony?
I haven't had a need for it in real-world shooting, but it is there in the manual, so I'm sure it will
Hi i am having difficulty to make the flash trigger make the Godox V1 work....can anyone explain the procedure. The manual is not clear
Thanks for another great review Dustin. Quick question did you use the Yongnuo wireless controllers along with the Godox V1?
I actually used a Godox trigger here
HiDustin. I'm buying the V1, thanks for the perceptive review. Question: Earlier Godox flashes were rumored to misfire on Sony occasionally, and the primary fix was to switch to mechanical first curtain shutter. Do you recall were you using EFCS during your testing or MFCS? Did you have many misfires? Thank you. Art
I have not had misfires, and I was fine with the EFCS on my a7RIII, but I think I needed to switch to mechanical shutter on my a9.
Great info Dustin. I'm switching from Sony to Canon and am looking at this speedlight as a replacement to my 600-exrt. How is the focus assist beam in very low light? I heard that the previous VS860-iis focus assist beam is not compatible with Sony. I want to make sure this one does for event photography in low light. Cheers
I'm not sure that the focus beam is compatible...though I haven't had a problem with focus.
Hi Dustin. Please provide a link to the “light scoopers” so we can get you credit! B&H or Adorama would be great. Thank you!
I don't see the link for the light modifier you had on it. How does the power output compare to the top Nikon speedlights?
The link is in the description, but you can find it here: bit.ly/abbottlite
The battery is available for €69 here. When you want to use the big batterypack, you can use the Godox BP960 for about €132. That wil give you a massive 1800 full power flashes.
Eric de Kuijper The V1 (like the V860ii) isn’t compatible with external battery pack.
Godox man, I’ve got the AD400 Pro, 2 x AD200’s, 2 x V350’s, 2 x XPro triggers and 2 x V1’s all for the price of a Profoto softbox 👊🏻😁
That's just crazy!
This is a great review, thanks! I was wondering if you’ve ever used the old Quantum T4D flashes, and how they would compare to these Godox units. I used Quantums for weddings & portraits (thru softboxes/umbrellas) w Pocket Wizards. The Godox is a lot cheaper so I’d like to know if they’re durable enough for a 5-6 hr wedding shoot (btw I did buy the 7RIV this week and find your videos indispensable!)
I haven't tested the Quantums, unfortunately.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah, that brand is old-old - years before utube! I did buy a Godox v1 based on your review along w the X1 transmitter and thus far it’s pretty good, works well w my shoot-thru umbrella. All your reviews are very thorough👍. Thanks
Good to hear someone speak well of TTL.. I found Godox is great for it with Canon. I've taken some really nice pics on camera with speedlight sofboxes... I've found that bouncing isn't much softer than a 8" round or a 9 x 12... I tested several, including I have 3 AD 200s so I'll probably get the round head attachment for those.. But maybe I may pick one of these up for the size... It'll control my TT600s...
I'm going to tested the AD 200 Pro soon.
@@DustinAbbottTWI WIll look out for it... It's a tossup, but sometimes candid shots are better with on camera with modifiers - using TTL... Canon is great for it... The V1 though has a transmitter... Big advantage..
I need a flash for my Sony A7iii, I'm wondering if the Godox will communicate with the camera the way a Sony flash would do. Are there any camera functions that wouldn't work with the Godox attached.
Hi Steve, I've never seen any limitations in using the Godox on my cameras.
Could you tell me if it is possible to do rear curtain or second sync off camera with a canon camera? Is there any triggers that have rear curtain on them as canon does it in flash and not in camera like nikon.
Hi Spence, maybe someone else will chime in, but otherwise you'll have to ask Godox, as I've only tested these on a Sony platform.
Dustin I have the ad200 how do you think this would work w off camera between those 2 ? Was gonna use it mainly for on camera for my 5d
You can control the AD200 from the V1, if that's what you are asking.
I have an Impact Cruizer monolight with its own wireless remote. Could that fire the Godox flash as well, say to use it as hairlight?
I don't really know the answer to that. It's possible it could take the optical input as a trigger, but I have no way to verify that.
Hi Dustin! Thank you for the details review you have done. It was really helpful for me choosing the flash from your review 🙂. Just wanna know which light stand will go with this flash and which one are you using in this video? Thanks
I mostly use these: bhpho.to/3zvZe2O Good value for money, and they've been durable.
Thank you 🙂
Hi Dustin
Love your reviews. Can you suggest me a flash please. I have canon 80D . New to flash photography.
Thanks
I think I would go for this one. I've been very impressed with it.
Hi Dustin, thanks for this very thorough review (as always :0)
Is the modelling lamp strong enough to be seen through a soft box so as to be able to see how the flash will light the model ?
All the best,
David
That depends on how high the ambient light in the room is. In a dim room, yes, but otherwise I would say no.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you. I'll probably go with the AD200 pro and H200R head as the modeling light seems much brighter.
All the best !
I have the godox X1t 2.4G trigger. Can I syn the V1 with it? Still learning alot about on and off flashes
I believe the answer is yes, but I haven't used the X1 personally.
Is there any mention of the AF aid light and whether it works with Sony cameras?
I can't remember if it does or not. It's been a while since I've done this review. That might be a good question for Godox.
thanks!
Welcome
do you know if the laser ir focus assist works with the canon r5
I don't know the answer to that.
I have a problem here and I hope someone can help me .
I mounted this V1 on my A7iii and i put it the speed light to manual . But there is a slight delay when I start shooting ... whenever I press the shutter button , it takes a little delay before it fires .
Is there anyone having the problem or can provide solution ?
Have you ever used Sony HVL-F60RM? Wonder how that compared to v1. Heard it's more reliable on shoes where most ppl use godox off shoes
I haven't used one myself.
I have now replaced 6 Speedotron 2400 w/s boxes with 3 Godox V1N flashes for commercial studio work.
And how do you like the switch?
Appreciate the review! Question, is it compatible with Flashpoint's PB - 960 battery pack?
I don't know that for certain. That's probably a question for Godox.
No. It does not have a port for use with the pb 960
Hello Dustin. Could you please tell if the V1 works (TTL & Manual & HSS) with the youngnuo set? Thank you.
I haven't tested that combination.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I already did, it works.
If anyone pros need ATG AF assist beam, then you have to get ATG Gold transmitter series.
Prices are much more than Profoto.
What is the guide number to it compared to other speedlight flashes? How intuitive is the manual settings? I find with canon speedlights, especially outdoors, i have to switch to manual frequently otherwise the flashes would underexpose. Thanks!
The guide number is 92 feet (28m) at ISO 100 and 50mm. I find the manual settings pretty intuitive.
@@DustinAbbottTWI That GN seems lower than i was hoping, compared to the canon/nikon speedlight offerings, but then again, i suppose canon/nikons GN will drop some when measured at 50 instead of 100mm... Thanks for the info, i'm definitely considering picking up one of these.
Thanks for the helpful video. What's the bottom plate with your name on it? I think that that would be great for my A7RII
It's from Smallrig - I reviewed it here: czcams.com/video/M-cxhD0lTuA/video.html
hello Dustin, for this flash what model trigger we can use?
I used the Godox X-Pro
What was the trigger unit on the camera? Was that Sony or Godox?
Good review!
Godox
Dustin another big advantage is having the battery. Have they made the option to buy another battery with charger yet ? Does it come with a charger or just a cord
Yes - the battery is listed in the description, and they do include a separate charger.
Mr Abbot, the other day I was invited to a wedding and the photographers told me they had to switch back to Canon from Sony A7R ii because "TTL just doesn't work" and they need the red-light focusing grid projected by the flash when shooting in dark environments. I have a Godox v860ii and I have to say, I am also struggling with TTL and currently only shooting manually. And of course the focusing red light doesn't light up. Does this flash solve this particular problem? Does the red focusing light work? Any opinions on TTL not working well on Sony mirrorless cameras? Many thanks for your fantastic work!
I’ll have to test further. I haven’t had any issues thus far, but I’ll purposely test
chane to single focus, it will light up red focusing
My Godox v860ii (Canon) is unusable in TTL, even on camera. The metering is all over the place, even in circumstances where it should be straightforward. Makes me hesitant to try out the V1.
The logic behind the rectangular landscape shaped head is that it mimics what is required to best cover camera film and sensor dimensions when using a bare flash. The problem now though is that it is only a matter of time that one abandons the problematic on-Camera bare flash and starts using off-camera modifiers. That’s were the round head excels.
That sounds reasonable.
What stand do you use when you use the flash off camera?
I've used a number of these and find them good value for money: bhpho.to/3iB6p1I
If the money difference is no issue, should we get this over the 860ii? Is there anything that is worse in the V1? Thanks for the video.
I haven't used the 860ii, so I can't comment.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I've looked it up and it seems pretty much the same specs on paper. Thanks anyway!
had never seen a round head before but then again i dont use flash all that often, pretty interesting product though kind of reminds me of a light meter
It's an interesting flash, for sure.
Dustin, Does it have the red focus assist beam to help focus accurately in low or no light?
I believe the answer is yes.
@@DustinAbbottTWIo you believe or do you know for a fact the answer is yes? Do you still have it and can you let me know?
I do have it, but I'm traveling at the moment and don't have access to it.
That's a question you should be able to easily answer by checking with Godox, though
@@DustinAbbottTWI Hi Dustin, could you check, if it works for Sony, please? I hear, that most Godox flashes have it, but it does not work with Sony.
Dustin I’m confused. I have a ad200. I have a canon 5d. If I got this flash can I mount it right on top of my canon 5d without any need for anything else. I have a hard time thinking I would need anything to mount on top but you never know. That’s the impression I got from the video. And then off camera controlling with the xpro your saying I would need something else to control it ?
You can use this on top of your camera, yes. Direct flash on camera is often not as flattering of light, which is why I spoke about the X-Pro
Dustin Abbott yes I’m aware. Hence why I bounce it. I guess I’m just trying to find out why I wouldn’t just buy a godox 685 when it’s cheaper and almost as powerful.
I guess the biggest advantage is the quality of the light from the round head.
couldnt figure out how to turn on the modeling light. Can it only be turned on with the godox trigger?
No, you can control it via the on-flash menu in ten steps.
Press the little lightbulb symbol on the command wheel, then press the center set button ;)
Flary Fox ahhhh thanks !!! I wasn’t pressing that center button to turn it on
Good video
Thanks
Hi Dustin thanks for the review. Can you share more thoughts on Sony flash metering system? I've used Panasonic and Fuji in the past and now Canon for its much better flash system. With Panasonic the auto ISO doesn't work when using an external flash; while Fuji only meters for the ambient without taking flash output into consideration, resulting in over exposed images in darker situations. With these lessons learned I'm more conservative about buying into other systems. Thank you.
Well, at least with these two particular combinations, I got better TTL function out of the Sony/Godox combo than the Canon/Metz combo. I often use manual flash settings at weddings/groups/portraits for repeatability, but I impressed with the TTL performance here.
@@DustinAbbottTWI That helps a lot with my future purchases, thank you Dustin.
I love your videos, kindly help me, i use godox 860vii with a7riv and found that hot shoe of a7r4 is tight for godox socket and takes a bit of a push to insert the godox flash on the hot shoe. Do u face the issue too?
Just watch out for the pins getting bent. I ran into that one time.
@@DustinAbbottTWI pins inside the camera hot shoe or the actual flash, because i just double checked both and the pins are intact and in place.
Check both. That's where I had my problem. Beyond that, it probably will get smoother with use.
@@DustinAbbottTWI ok sure, thanks for your help.
Does it come with the carry case?
It comes with a nylon case.
Hi Dustin, excellent vid. Merit a sub 😀 from me. Quick question, do you think it is worth it to get the Xpro trigger vs the newer X2T? I’m planning on buying the V1 and a trigger and later acquiring the AD200 for off flash fun....😀
I haven't used the X2T, so I can't comment on that. The V1 and AD200 are pretty great.
so would this be appropriate for the sony a7s mk2?
Sure
I believe the 850 manual had the main flash + 5 groups, A-E. (Don't know if the 860ii changed that). IT looks like this only has main + 3 external groups. Why did they give less groups - I always use 4 external flashes.
If you are using a remote trigger (I use the X-ProS), you can use even more groups.
@@DustinAbbottTWI So you are confirming the V1 has only 3 external groups (and not 5)? BTW, when using the trigger, how do you get the speed lights higher than group E for slave? Don't you need the bridge piece for $20? In any case, very disappointing using less groups than before as not every camera has a PC port for the trigger which you need if you also need the flash on camera.
Was looking for a good alternative to 1st party product. Thanks again!
I think so.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks again, I also found your video on the 105mm f1.4 Sigma lens and I am looking for a lens in that focal length just have to check if it is not going to break the bank. I took your advice on the Tamron 35mm f1.8 VC and found it very nicely made and look forward to using. Any ideas on an alternative to a fast 50mm Canon? Tom
@@SuperBuickregal Canon RF 50 1.2 ;) :P / Sigma 50mm / Canon 50 1.4 / 50 is quite broad range of different primes in the same focal. What camera do you use and what are your priorities. Sharpness, Light weight, Aperture, Price ?
I actually liked the Tamron 45mm F1.8 VC quite a bit as a 50mm alternative. It's got some flaws that I detailed in my review, but has nice rendering to a lot of images.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes I was kicking that can also and it is dirt cheap and thanks again.
What trigger can I use for the V1c?
I use the X-ProC and am happy with it. bhpho.to/3FXlYix
Does the AF Beam assist work for Sony A7 series?
I've actually had a hard time forcing it to engage. I don't know how to manually force that. I've sometimes just used the modeling light instead.
Bonsoir et merci pour cette vidéo, le samedi je suis tombé en panne dans un grand événement .Le flash V1F de Godox acheté il y a même pas un mois au salon de la photo de paris a décidé de me lâcher
Profitez de votre nouveau flash!
Hi, very informative review! One things i may have missed: you mentioned the yongnuo wireless flash triggers. Does the V1 work with these yongnuo wireless flash triggers or do I have to use the godox one ?
Good question. I haven’t tested that combo. They would work fine in manual, but not sure about TTL
That bounce light alone has convinced me that maybe spending almost 3x as much compared to the TT685S just might be worth it.
It's definitely very versatile for bouncing.
So ...you have the illusion that a slightly different light pattern on the the ceiling will make any difference on your shots. You might need to work a bit more on your bouncing technique.
@@octap79 You can see it in the pictures here and I've seen the difference when I use different shapes of diffusers. It makes a difference. I can work around it, but I'd prefer not to.
whats the difference between the godox v1 and v1s?
The V1S is for Sony. V1C for Canon, V1N for Nikon, etc... It's all the same flash, but set up for different camera makers TTL
