I don't usually delve as deeply into the historical accuracy of a reproduction as I did here, but a detail on the scabbard prompted me to take a closer look. This sword shows respectable quality in some regards and seems fine in and of itself if you're not familiar with other Roman gladii, but I've found some issues, as you'll see in the video.

Making the sword heavier than it historically would have been? Fine.
Lying about the weight of the sword on your webpage, misrepresenting one of the fundamental, performance-relevant properties of your good? Highly questionable, if not illegal.
Holy shit. I totally looked it up online and yep it says that. Also they're out of stock.
I would think that falls under false advertising. Even if the review sample sent to Skall was not representative of the actual product - which would make no sense, we now cannot trust the information on their website as accurate

There's just something about the handle being "orange" and the scabbard being black that really upsets me.
I really dislike that color of wood they used for the handle altogether.
The scabbard being a completely different color does makes it a whole lot worse...

Dynasty Forge: "Yeah, we're gonna need you to go ahead and send the sword back now...thaaaaaanks".
The only thing is, they probably want the constructive criticism. Its not like he bashed it and said it was horrible. Just that it didn't live up to his expectations which I feel is a completely fine revelation
I thought the review was great. He tells it as it is. The issue with weight not being correct is important. Personally I would have liked the blade to be a bit shorter from looking at it which would cut down the weight along with a shorter handle. The grip could of been a little bit more round. I can't imagine holding a square piece of wood being comfortable.
But is this not the reason they sent the sword?

I've handled a DE gladius for about 10 minutes and I thought it was very crudely made and over-weight (plus a faux leather scabbard).
And I have a DE xyphos - much better than the gladius, but not a refined product either - grinding marks all over and a cheap faux leather scabbard too. But the xyphos is good for the price if you're willing to put in some work into it.

Let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll.
The handle seems to be to long for a thrust oriented gladius. Similary to much later viking sword the hand should be fixed firmly between the pommel and the guard with its fingers resting on the ridges of the handle itself in order to facilitate a firm grip needed for a thrust and a cut. Otherwise you can harm your wrist.

The weight is something that might be worth contacting Dynasty Forge about. There is always some tolerance in weight because every sword is unique, but almost doubled weight compared to the website is unacceptable. Makes me wonder if they sent a very bad factory lemon, or if they changed something in the design (heavier wood or steel?) that renders the website outdated.

This is gunna come as no surprise to anyone but I have the same handling issue with my cold steel gladius machete. I'm a kali practitioner and I sometimes train with a bat to get good at handling the weight. Plus, it's a machete so I was more worried the thing would have almost no heft and be flimsy.
Rather, when I picked it up it felt closer to a bat than I thought. It's not HEAVY per se, and it's maybe about 1/10th of an inch thick. Point of balance is, like 4 or 5 inches from the gaurd. But, yea it handles more like a chopper and is less nimble at the point than I imagined a gladius would be. For a tool that happens to be pointy, it's decent. I don't think I'd want to fence with it, I find myself wanting to use my whole body to keep it in motion or to use it two handed.

at 10:26: if it is heavier, it will have more inertia. It would be interesting to compare it with the other gladi after it has been sharpened.
Hi Skall, good review, I was just wondering however if you can edit the end of your videos differently, The video boxes seem to be consistently coming in a bit too early on your recent videos. Don't know if this is something to fix, but its just been bothering me.
It's basically Dynasty Forge's own take on a gladius. Doesn't fit with a particular type and has aspects of few variations thrown in.

I love your honesty XD
I'm not personally keen on black leather for scabbards (or sword handles). I used to do re-enactment where black was a BIG no-no due to 'historical accuracy', but I knew someone who had accidentally dyed/stained a scabbard by leaving an iron spearhead laying on it - and someone else who told me, from personal experience, that bleeding on leather (also accidentally) is a sure-fire way to stain it black.
I wonder what Spartacus and Roman Legionaries, would think of our modern interpretation of the Gladius?
Is there a gladius you could recommend? I want something authentic Mainz style whilst also functional, I.e. not a display only sword. Thanks bro
Now that is a thing of beauty
Have you reviewed the condor tactical gladius? Interested to know your thoughts
I wonder if there are roman shield replicas available...
I was shocked at how heavy the gladius is. Are there any special training techniques I can use to get better with it (one handed)?
i like how u pronounce mainz right thumbs up for that
Kicking this video off with the patented Skalla-grimace.
I think the problem with ballistics gel when testing swords is that while the tensile strength is similar to the human body the material that it is made of sticks to the blade way more than real flesh. I'm certain that if he were to stab a pig carcass for example the gladius would have went right through instead of only penetrating a few inches. The wider the sword the more surface area and the more force that it requires to penetrate deeply.
I would like to see a review of Del Tn viking sword 2104 :)) ( u can find it on kultofathena but the downside is it takes 3 months to be shipped
If you get the opportunity, would you be willing to do a review on the ZombieTools Legionnaire?
Is there an issue with the "broken wrist" grip when cutting with the gladius? Since that's how it is intended to be gripped, is there anything in particular that you do to prevent injury?
That's a good setting here on your porch (is it how it is called ?) but RIP your eyes :p
The liberties taken for the design might be a problem for reenactors but should be ok with collectors I believe, it's still a beautiful object. Tho I'm a bit surprised with the handle, doesn't look historically accurate. Finally, the weapon being too heavy is a downside for a gladius and I find it really weird that the description on the website doesn't match.
I use a heavy shortsword for sparring (1.4 Kg) What i like about it compare to lighter shortswords it, that it can absorb more force, if i parry and is not easily knocked back. In this way i can make a good bind out of a defensiv situation and the shortness of the blade is mostly a strenght in the bind, what results in good control of the enemys weapon. It has the shape of a bronzeage leafblade and also no crossguard, so it is more risky to parry very low. A heavier short blade can block good enough in the upper sections, without getting knocked back. Its only my opinion and experience.
Skall straight up looking like a reject postal dude in this vid.
“Hey there, would you like to sign my petition?”
I get more of a ZZ Top vibe than a postal one...
Now the flowers will grow
"I suppose it's more politically correct to kill the women and minorities first"
The sword just needed a better edge and he would have loved it.
Thanks Skall
I like how Skall pronounces gladii correctly.
The scabbard really looks like a regular "medieval" style scabbard that they just put the brass furniture on to make it look fancy. Also, once you pointed out the rectagular shape of the grip, it really ruined the "at least it's good looking," excuse for me. The shape of the grip makes it look cheap and clumsily made to me even considering all the decorative metal fittings. My brain says, "that's not what a sword grip looks like!" Might make a good prop except it's too sharp for that.
I'm really enjoying Skall getting back into regular sword reviews.
INCRIDIBILIS, INFUIMUS, ETIAM. i love these swords, so simple yet dangous .
Is ballistic gell harder to stab and cut than a live body? It seems like bodies are wetter and that would facilitate penetration.
Want to see some Deepeeka gladii reviews!
Why do you hate Skall?
Are you open to review a video of me fighting in blade and sorcery?
I see we have similar ideas about the grip. I could deal with the blade, but the over sized grip needs to do.
Possibly they did it different enough on the scabbard so it isn’t sold as an exact replica, cause there are some regulations and such regarding what an exact replica, if you were selling as such.
Verdict: great advertisement for Raven Armoury's Fulham gladius!
As always amazing into
Not a copy, just inspired by! I would like to see you use the skallsion on balistic gel. Could it be the equivilent of an officers dress sword? You know, more meant to look good, rather than be used on a battlefield.
omg the blade is so shiny. it looks like camoflage.
Which might be dazzling and cool. But if fighting in a forest, it could be really confusing when it suddenly looks like your sword turned into a leafy bunch of tree branches
A shiny blade is exactly the opposite of camouflage.
@@erikblarg5498 yeah, I no way I'll see a mirror in the forest. All that light it reflects is just natural shine. Wow, the wind really sounds like it's speaking Roman and wearing armor...
Maybe if you are hiding in a mirror factory.
Wouldn't Roman gladii be made from carburized hearth steel that has been pattern welded to homogenize differences in carbon content? I would assume an authentic Roman gladius wouldn't snap back into shape as well as a late Rennaisance long sword made of spring steel.
Honestly, removing the fancy brass, shortening the handle and shortening the tip would cut down on weight a little , increase durability and lower the price. The scabbard is binged out already. The sword doesn't need to be pimped. Then round off the hilt and make it less glossy.
Hey Skall. I dont know, if you already noticed it, but there is a book written by Leo Carew, where an grumpy, old officer exist. His name is Skallagrim
Thank you.
Will you sharpen it and try cutting with it again?
I agree with testing the factory edge, but I would also like to see a bit of personal sharpening.
Or was this after you sharpened it?
Unfortunately I don't have the time to sharpen it currently, and considering how it's more of a thrusting sword overall I think it's alright to leave it at that.
@@Skallagrim Okay, thank you!
Wow didn't realize there were so many styles of gladius
I'd guess the relief design on the scabbard as being "inspired" by, but different enough to the original, so that other companies can't outright copy their design.
Many (many) years ago, I played in a D&D game where our party encountered a Kobold named James Bond who wielded a +1 two-handed shortsword. Good times :)
Don't worry Skall, it's natural to focus on the negative. It's a survival trait. We notice and remember negative things to avoid them. Positive things are generally not a threat.
A gladius this heavy would be used for training by the romans, but they would use blunt wooden ones, and also scutum that were double the weight.
Thank you Master Skall
