You should! It is a great trip and has easy access points along the river. You can also run solo trips and catch an uber back to town for your vehicle while your boat waits for you at one of the tubing outfits. Just speak with the employees there and they are generally more than happy to keep an eye on your boat while you are getting your vehicle.
I am looking for a fishing Kayak that can comfortably handle a dog in it so now the NuCanoe Frontier has made the list. Are there any others with a large deck space that you would recommend? I am also looking at the Crescent CK1 and Crescent Lite Tackle. Great video.
Yes the nucanoe is perfect for that! Another brand to check out is the Diablo Paddlesports kayaks. Large flat deck spaces with high weight capacity. The Lite tackle is great for some smaller doggos and they even make a pad for the front hatch so they can get better tractions. Getting into the 40-50lbs + dog range might make for a crowed deck between you legs.
Hi Lance, I would suggest pulling out at Texas State Tubes. Make sure to give them a call first so they know you will be coming. If you want to get out before the tubing section, you can pull out at the Old Bastrop HWY bridge - cutting the trip by about 2 miles, but will avoid tubers in the summer months.
That looks like a fantastic trip! I am in SE, and NE, PA there is a section of the old Schuylkill canal that you can paddle up river, portage over the the Schuylkill river, near Valley Forge National park, paddle down and then portage back to where you started! I do have a question. How is it running any rough water in a SOT? I have an old Perception Prodigy 12' that is really fun to run class 1s and borderline 2s in, but I am looking for an SOT that is easier to fish out of, but can still go in a river. Any suggestions?
Sit on tops can handle quite a bit, but you may be getting into some stuff that is borderline for the SOT's. I would definitely look for one that has a lower or adjustable seat so you can lower your center of gravity during the heavy rapid sections. It will make it easier to fish, carry gear and stand to sight cast or paddle board which are some things I really enjoy about the SOT's.
How's the pursuit on rapids? I'm 6'2 220 and want a do it all yak. A lot of people want me to get the Crescent LT. I think for a bigger guy and dog the pursuit is the way to go.
I absolutely love the Nucanoes for the river trips. the lite tackle is great, but especially doing multi-day trips, the higher weight capacity comes in handy. The pursuit will handle like a dream. I just went out in another video with a bunch of our ACK Syndicate and we had 3 F12's, an F10 and a Pursuit with use and all took the rapids and skinny water well.
No, but this would have been pretty low. The san marcos has a pretty consistent flow and really doesnt affect the water level much above Cummings Dam. Below the damn, when the water is low, a few more rocks will be showing but still wont have many, if any, extra portages.

I'm from SETX and have kayaked Village Creek my entire life but my sister lives in San Marcos and I would absolutely love to make this trip! There's alot of sand bars and wooded areas to camp on Village Creek and we usually make it an overnight trip. Not so much for the San Marcos?
So this trip from the headwaters to the last tubing outfits is about 9 miles. There is limited camping due to the steep banks, but there are places to camp. Camping on the beach next to the damn will give you the most area. A few small islands but may be tough for a larger group. You can also talk with Don's Fish Camp about camping there overnight, which is at the getout, and can make another day out of it down to Skull Road Crossing or Staples Dam. There are more places to camp on that stretch and will help avoid the tubers during the summer months.
I try not to bring the pole and the dog on the same trip. Dont need to hook a dog-fish lol. Gonna be a fun trip! We will be hitting this section day one.
I like to park at Lion's Club in San Marcos and go down to Either Stokes Park (short trip) or the Old Bastrop Highway Bridge (medium Trip) or two miles past that to where the tubers get out. There will be a couple sections you might need to be careful n the inflatable but regularly see people out there on those.
We use to do this river in the Boy Scouts I do remember the dam by getting to the right side of the river and having to carry the canoes down the side of the dam
