Kayak Camping Texas - 2 Day Escape (Guadalupe River)

- The Guadalupe River is an amazing place to visit during summer (when there's flow!). Towering Cypress trees form tunnels along the river creating an engaging place to explore. We spent 2 days paddling and camping!

Gatewood, thank you for all you do. I’ve been living the worst 2 months of my life fighting with depression, suicidal thoughts, and losing myself worth. But watching your videos really help get my minds off of the things that I’ve been struggling with. So thank you!
You are worth it my man! I can promise you people are enriched by your presence. I know it’ll be a tough road to work through depression but you’ve got this! Hey shoot me a message on Instagram
I feel you, bro...i really do. Hang in there and get in the wild for a couple of days... you'd be surprised what it can do to your heart and soul. Heading for lake Texoma in about a week from now.
Best regards. Stay strong. God bless.
Hang in there. This too shall pass. It always does. Go to the beach. Read a self help book. Speaking from my personal experience. Take care and God bless.
Kaleb, I've been there. Recently I was diagnosed with one of the worst cancers a person can have, yet every day I find so many reasons to be thankful. I never realized the extent of my blessings until I was forced to count them each morning. Hang in there, young man. This too will pass.
Hang in there Bud. This rough streak will pass soon. Last year, I lost my older brother Rober to Covid and it devastated me. I felt like you do right now. But I realized that my brother wouldn’t want me to take my own life, but instead live life to the fullest. So I got his sons into kayak fishing this year and things have gradually gotten a lot better. There’s hope for you. You have a purpose. God Loves you. As do all of the People in your life. Even those that don’t even know you here on CZcams. You’ll get through this bud! Hang in there and never give up. 🙏👍🙌🏽👊
I’ve lived in Texas for all of my life and I never experienced it like you guys. It’s inspiring!
Oh yes there’s so much to see! Definitely a place full of wonder
Your parents raised you right. Love watching your videos. Keep up the great work bud! 🇺🇸👊👍
Thank you Rene! I’ll be sure to pass those kind words on to them.
Ah, the trip where Michael forgot his sleepin' stuff finally makes it's appearance! lol. But jeez, hopefully that absolutely perfect morning with those birds and the river made up for the bad night. Those Cyprus trees are so friggin cool. Never thought tiny rivers in the middle of Texas would make it to my bucket list, yet here we are lol.
Yes! Michael rolled in to camp like…dang forgot my stuff lol. Seriously one of the most relaxing mornings I’ve had at camp. Had a half mile to paddle so there was no rush at all. The cypress have to be my favorite tree out there. Haha cheers to bringing Texas rivers some well deserved recognition!
Those cicadas were relentless!
I absolutely love your videos and they make me want to kayak all of these central Texas rivers! I only live about 2 1/2 hours away from them but feel I need someone experienced in kayak camping with me.
Thank you so much! Yeah right now they’re all super low from the drought but hopefully that’ll change this fall
That paddling footage @6:00 so crispy
Thanks man! Chris always does a great job when I ask him to paddle in front of me haha
your videos keep my mind healthy. i bought my kayak and paddle, camping gear and am planning for my first trip here in oklahoma! wish i could head south to join you guys!
Wow that’s very kind of you to say! Thank you! Eastern Oklahoma has some cool rivers like the lower mountain fork and beaver bend lake. Have fun!
Going down the waterfall was really cool
Haha it was a fun start to the trip! Chris was like…my dude why didn’t you tell me it was a 4’ drop! Haha
8:40, probably the most baller moment in this entire video! Another great trip!!
Haha thanks Ryan! Thanks for watching again man!
Love your content! Getting back into kayaking and looking for new adventures. Very inspirational videos, keep em coming man!
Thank you! Always cool to connect with fellow Texans pursuing the outdoors
Your coffee maker is like our Italian Bialetti and you should use a splash guard to avoid surprises 😂😂😂👍🏼 anyway great video and great friends as always 😃💪🏼
Yes! It is just like your bialetti, which makes wonderful coffee! We thank our Italian friends for that device
The scene is very beautiful. Thank you for sharing to let me know more about this beautiful place
Thank you so much for watching!!
Just started watching your videos popped up on my search. I raft the nantahala in North Carolina with my two grand kids and my daughter it was wild. I'm a subscriber now you got great stuff.
Oh wow! The nantahala is pretty advanced. Kudos to you all!
A bunch of guys after my own heart - coffee connoisseurs...
Yes! If you’re going to have a daily beverage might as well make it delicious!
man,
first i’d like to say how refreshing it is seeing quality content in my recommendations for once lol, you know how it’s fucking done. You’re an outstanding filmmaker and storyteller and I could genuinely not stress enough how much these videos have motivated me to start and explore this little world of ours. I’m eager to. I just discovered your channel a few days ago and been consuming video after video with my mind completely blown by the showcase of what this world looks like through the lens of a man in the woods with his buddies. It’s fucking great let’s be real here. I see you’re fairly “small” in subs and will be rooting to see you go up from here. I’m stoked for your journey! I hope you’ll take in consideration shipping those wonderful bags to Europe as well as other parts of the world, TAKE OUR MONEY! They are too cool!! It’s dope what you guys are doing, keep it up good sirs!
Your comment literally made my week! Thank you for taking the time to both watch the videos AND drop those kind words. I’ll definitely pass it along to the buddies, they’ll appreciate it. We live in a spectacular world and it doesn’t take that much to get lost in it, even as city boys haha. Which country are you in? I’m always evaluating places to ship.
@@GatewoodBrown Hey dude my apologies for not seeing your comment earlier! Glad I could give you my feedback. I’m currently situated in Belgium, not the greatest place for outdoor shenanigans but we definitely have some spots! On another note I’ve bought myself some gear to kickstart my explorations with and am currently in talk with some buddies to go to Guatemala for a backpacking trip. You’ve really sparked this want for exploring the outdoors that i’ve been ignoring for years getting stuck on what to do with life. Life is short and our world is fucking beautiful. I’m glad you got to instil the fuck it and go mentality in me, I’m beyond exited.
@@exhale7873 you’re so spot on! It’s all about just going full send into the wilderness and seeing what’s out there. Guatemala will be so rad! Enjoy my man
Very nice, Gatewood. Enjoyed meeting you and your friends that day. We had a stellar trip, too.
Hey les! Yes it was great hanging out. Wish we had more time!
I found your channel today, I'm so pleased I did. Your content is awesome. xx
Thank you so much Debbie! Glad to have you as a part of the community!
Ah, that's refreshing just watching the video! Unfortunately, it seems we're relegated to just watching river kayaking videos during this "dry spell!" It was great meeting you, Michael and Chris! We enjoyed hanging out for a bit. I guess I need to put together the highlights of our trip from this same weekend!
Yes! Took me so long to get this one out. Wish I could’ve included our whole interaction for memories sake but it was fun coming across the footage and reliving it all again. Cheers Michael!
YES! YES! YES!!!! KAYAK CAMPING VIDEOS FOR THE WIN!!
I AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT!
Looks like you guys had an awesome adventure on that river! Great video as always 👍
We did! Always great to get out with longtime friends. Hope your summer has been well!
The race to find camp. Lol. I know that feeling.
Getting some hammock time in too. Nice
Cool video Gatewood 👍🏻👍🏻
Sometimes it turns to a grind to find that camp. Not ideal but a recurring theme lol
@@GatewoodBrown I’m going to the rapids next weekend. Big South Fork river in Tennessee and Kentucky. Can’t wait
As soon as that notification came in, I tuned in. I’ve watched it a few times today just dreaming of getting out on the water.
Always there supporting thank you my man!! I’m dreaming of rain lol. Everything here is so low right now
Man I lived on the Guadalupe River for a couple years in New Braunfels. I loved it and miss it terribly!
What a wonderful place to live! NB and the guad are such a great combo. We love visiting there
That drop off reminds of the drop off they have in Beavers Bend Broken Bow OK. It’s right under the bridge by the canoe rentals there if anybody ever goes. I did it when I was 15 so you can too. Just be ready to pull your flooded boat to shore.
And I mean the canoe rental place within the state park itself.
Oh yeah I think I know what you’re talking about. Definitely a kayak flooding event if you don’t have a sit on top haha
@@GatewoodBrown I did it over and over despite lugging a water loaded kayak to shore 😂😂
@@HateTheGameTX we call that type 2 fun haha. Hard work but fun!
Another incredible video! Some great shots and transitions - loved it 🙌
Thank you Katie! Always happy to see you watching the videos. Cheers!
Great overnight trip, Gatewood! Exceptionally done, as always! I'm gonna practice that PFD toss! :-D
Thank you SP! Haha the PFD toss is a staple for the launch lol
I love the music and the edit
Thanks Marshall! Definitely went for a laidback vibe on this one
Great video as always. Glad to see y'all had enough water. My wife and I stayed near the San Gabriel and it was so low. The lady who owned the place said that was the lowest she could ever remember and she had been living on the property since the 70s.
The rivers in Texas are so low right now. Even this section is bad now. I can’t ever remember drought being this bad in the hill country
Always enjoy your videos from years past and now.
Been watching just about everyday for a week, now.
Thanks for sharing all of your awesome adventures. I was raised like that too.
Best regards, Gate Brownwood and company!
Thanks my man! I appreciate you watching all the vids. Means a lot to have you and others taking time to watch them. Cheers!
Enjoyed the video Gatewood! You are very lucky to have this river in your home state!
Yes it’s a very understated beauty! I think the cypress trees give Texas rivers such a unique feel
This looked like an absolute blast! I bet that water was so refreshing!
It was! That lunch time dip was key!
Love it man!
Thanks my dude!
Another great trip!
Thanks PB!
Epic vid as always
Thank you so much, Steve! Hope you’ve been well my man
Great content love the GoPro slo mo action!
GoPro films the best slowmo! You can get in the action so well
so fun. love that little river.
The guad is great! So many good sections to paddle out there
Awesome video! Thanks
Thanks Doc!
Awesome video guys !!
Thank you so much for sharing 🙂

Happy to see another video!! Keep them coming!! Hopefully I’m able to go kayaking again this summer!
Cheers AD! Yes I’ve got several more in the editing queue. Working hard to get them uploaded this summer! Hopefully you can get out there man!

Always look forward to your vids ! Definitely one of my favorite CZcamsrs FOR SURE🤙
That means a lot Joey! And thank you so much for the kind words! Stoked to have you a part of the community
I just watched a video of a guy standing in the middle of that river saying it's the lowest it's ever been, pretty wild.
Yeah it’s so low right now. Crazy!
Awesome job, beautiful river!
Thanks Josh! The guad is a mighty fine place for sure

Thank you shamika! I’ve got many more on the way. Just need to edit them up!
I love your video, make me dreaming and add river on my bucket list. You make a great quality and interesting stuff. Thank you
Thank you so much Nath! The Guadalupe has many wonderful stretches of river.
------- another nice float trip / another nice vid: interesting to see how others approach a float trip - I don't know if I'm amazed/amused/appalled by the amount and variety of coffee making apparatus y'all haul - in 60+ years of canoeing I can't remember anyone even taking a coffee pot. Also noted in a couple of vids, y'all start by working upstream - that has to be strenuous. I've only tried going against the flow once, and that was during the monkey rescue during the infamous Lost Monkey Float Trip - I'm just too lazy. Your rivers there in Texas are gorgeous - we have nothing like them here along the Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama area. It would be great if you could add some map shots showing the areas you are floating - Texas isn't too far to travel for a good float trip. z
Haha it’s so worth it considering the items some people bring. Everyone brings their own device which is probably why it looks so egregious lol
Another awesome video. It's like watching a short movie clip. Please keep them coming. Thank you!
Thanks Kathy! More on the way!
Awesome 👏🏼
Thanks man!
awesome planning a trip for September to celebrate 2 years of sobriety, going west where I did the backpack review time to finally review the fanny pack lol.
September should be a great time to go! I appreciate the effort you put in on the reviews. Have fun heading west! I’ve started to contemplate going to Arkansas more lol. They get better rain
@@GatewoodBrown Im down to go, lets do this. Im going to dallas next week for a ministry conference thinking about bringing a yak and staying the weekend.
Great vid
Thank you AG!
Dude! That life jacket move, ha ha! Great video! So I subscribed with my other channel, Brian Morgan: we had chatted about me going to do a kayaking trip with some friends this summer up in Idaho and you said send you the edit: Well, I went down on the Snake River with a little sun dolphin to check out the rapids we were going to hit and I did a 11 mile stretch solo to see if my friends would be ok. I decided it was a little much for our first trip, so now we’re just going to raft it with a 14 footer and do some camping at a local hot springs. Some of the rapids were just a little too big for guys with zero experience. I flipped twice, but I had a blast. This was my first time on the river and it was inspired by you! Such an amazing experience. Since then I’ve been doing little travel and adventure videos and I’m going to try and grow my channel - it’s more like the adventures I go on with my family and friends rather than nitching down to just kayaking. But I will be doing a ton more river kayak camping, it was such a fun experience. Lots more rivers to explore in Idaho. I envy your cameras skills, but I’ll be catching up on the outdoor adventures, keep up the good work! Enjoy your summer. czcams.com/video/pOV6ApxOpGM/video.html
Man thank you for the trip report! The snake river sounds like a blast and definitely one I want to check out one day. Glad you all had fun out there!
@@GatewoodBrown czcams.com/video/AGX57wr52uo/video.html Just finished the edit - we had an awesome trip! Totally inspired by your videos - #lovenature
Great quality as always! I was planning on doing a kayak camp trip this summer with my 12 year old son. But this drought put a quick end to that. Luckily I'm less than an hour from the Guad, so we will get to do the trip once the flows return. Thanks for these kind of videos, they are inspiring!
Thank you GH! Yeah the drought has really quelled our paddling this summer. So unfortunate!
I found your channel this morning and I have literally been watching your videos for the last 4 hours! They are such amazing production quality! This is definitely motivation to get out and see what our beautiful state has to offer! Do you use a website to help plan your trips? I would love to know how you find where you can camp, where you can leave your vehicles/launch from etc. Thanks for the amazing content!
Welcome to the club.
Man thank you so much for the kind words! So stoked to have you a part of the community. Texas has some hidden gems for sure.
99% of my planning is done on 3 sites, 1. Google earth, 2. CZcams and 3. USGS flow rate gauges. I’ll make a video about this one day!

Thanks chase! Yeah seems like the whole country is in a heatwave and drought. Not ideal!
Nice!! Need to do this. Looks like alot of fun :)
Thanks so much man! Yeah you’re close to the guad so when it’s running again ya gotta check it out
Ah yes, those damn thorn bushes! Those things are vicious. Great trip bro. My crew and I are waiting for a little cooler weather before we camp, but planning a trip back up to the Buffalo in late summer with a cabin for home base and several day trip floats.
Yes the thorns are real! Yeah we need some rain and cooler weather for sure. This lack of rain is a deal breaker
Still trips me out when I see you take out your blue hammock, as I have the same exact one. Best deal I've come across in a while. You gotta get that Dutchware suspension, brother! Makes set up so so easy.
Yes! Really enjoyed the ROG but they can’t get their stock situation figured out which is unfortunate
@@GatewoodBrown I do see it's available on Amazon right now, but I totally get it. I've suggested it to several friends but all of them said it was unavailable at the time. Hopefully they can pan it out.. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures this summer. I've done 5 big trips on 4 different rivers so far this season up in MI. It truly is an art, filming and adventuring at the same time, as you do! Really thankful for the content.
Hammock camping is the best! Looks like a nice little trip. I’m headed back to the Eleven Point in Missouri in a couple of weeks for some river time. Once you do it, you just want more!
Yes! Huge fan of the hammock camping. Especially in summer since it is cooler than a tent. I’d love to visit Missouri for paddling!
@@GatewoodBrown I sprang for the warbonnet blackbird with zero degree under quilt. It was an investment but has been work every penny. I stay warmer in it than any tent for winter camping. I’ve been down to 28 degrees.

Hey buddy how you doing? What an awesome video man. I can see you had a lot of fun on the Guadalupe river with your buddy man. I seen a lot of videos on this River and I would love to go kayak camping on it one day. Just discovered your channel & I love it. How do you find where you plan to float & campsites? Are these highly trafficked rivers?
Thank you! I use Google earth and CZcams to watch people who have done particular sections before. We map out mileage and then stop somewhere that has legal riverbed camping. Target islands as there’s less grey area with them
Absolutely love this content, I actually went out and got all the gear and kayak for these trips and I have just been watching ur videos for tips and tricks bc u have all the local rivers I do, but my main question is how do u get back to ur truck after a 30 mile trip down river?
Thank you so much! Haha that’s so rad you picked up the gear. The most expensive part for sure!
We usually do 15 miles over 2 to 3 days and bring multiple cars. If you only have one car then you’ll have to do a boomerang trip like we did in big bend
You must have picked the perfect time. By spring branch it was under 50 cfs in late April and hasn't been above 20 for months. Looks like you put in further up, by Comfort maybe?
Yep fortunately went before it got too low. We need rain so bad these days!
Love the videos, can you post put in/take out of this one? Hard to find water right now. Thanks!
Unfortunately this stretch doesn’t have water at the moment either. We got on the river before flows severely declined

Munster cheese is so underrated
Agreed! It is delicious on everything haha
Do you ever invite subscribers to join you on trips? I just picked up a vintage wooden canoe...am in DFW area. Would be so much fun to attempt an adventure like this. It would probably need to be flatwater since canoes dont handle as well as the yaks. I was eyeing the Horseshoe bend in Arizona, or possibly the Red River in Oklahoma/Texas border (definitely closest option)...maybe try to catch some monster striped bass. I have a lot of fishing gear. Will be in Maine in August so really inspiring seeing the Penobscot video, have only done lakes there
I’ve been meaning to do a subscribers trip but haven’t found the time to plan one out. Combine that with bad flow rates and it just hasn’t been a priority. I do want that to change though! Lots of Great Lakes within 3 hours of DFW. I recommend caddo lake for a really cool experience
You are still on the Sportsman 120! That’s great. I love my 106. There are not enough videos of these paddle versions out there and it’s always refreshing to see your videos…do you have any concerns about snakes when you stop to camp or take a break?
Yes! Loving the sportsman 120 still. I actually have a 106 getting delivered on Wednesday! Really excited for that one. No concerns with snakes. Just stay away from snakey looking places and you’ll be good. We haven’t seen many in the years we’ve been paddling
Great video. What paddle do you have in this video?
Thank you! Aqua bound whiskey fiberglass. It’s the best!
