  • Since 2022, Chief Shirley Keeper is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Pikangikum First Nation Council.
In this video portrait, Chief Shirley candidly recounts her journey of accepting the invitation to assume the role of Chief. She describes the thoughtful consultations she engaged in with her community before taking this significant step and articulates the profound significance of embracing this leadership position.
In her narrative, she emphasizes her deep concern for the younger generation, with a particular focus on supporting young parents. Chief Keeper aspires to guide them along the intricate paths of both life and parenthood, with a heartfelt commitment to breaking the cycles of grief that may have persisted through generations. Her dedication to fostering positive change resonates as she shares her vision for a brighter future shaped by empowerment, support, and the collective effort to create a nurturing community.

In April 2023, Isorine Marc (Jamii's Alchemist) and photographer & videographer Gillian Mapp traveled to Pikangikum First Nation, ON Canada, for the 4th time since 2018. This visit to Pikangikum intended to shine a spotlight on the emerging and talented artists of the community, as well as community leaders and Elders. May their stories and voices be heard.
We are incredibly grateful for the support of art teacher Vanessa Hazel at Eenchokay Birchstick School, who was instrumental in supporting us through this project. Thank you to Eenchokay Birchstick School and the Pikangikum Education Authority for supporting this project and to Pikangikum for welcoming us into the community.
With the support of the Ontario Arts Council.
