Do want to a grown man cry at such beauty. I am 64 years of age and have been a fan of DCI since I was a teenager. I was privileged to see this show live.
My drumline instructor all throughout high school was the end snare. She was an intense teacher and got the maximum results from us. I've always been jealous of her that she marched such an epic and beautiful show.
Jealous you knew someone that marched in this incrediblel show. I marched in 1981 with the SkyRyders, but this is the best all time performance in my mind.
That company front at the end... it gets me every fucking time. Chills throughout my entire body. Such beautiful synchronization amongst the entire corps.
This show is what lit the fire in me for marching band. My band actually played a phantom showed my sophomore year and it was VERY heavily influenced by SCV's one. Bro. I am 32 and still get chills at this.

This show won DCI, but the '88 version won everyone's hearts. This is culmination of 80's style. Star's show in '90 broke open a new realm of possibility in hornline difficulty and staging.
What a show indeed! Still gives me chills. I have to expand on this, it’s brought back so many memories of those days of DC tours and the blood sweat and tears that go into it. I remember watching this show in Ogdensburg, NY in 89. We had already seen 88s edition from DCI championships of that year so we knew a lot of the arrangements just because of how closely we watched this performance. By the end of this performance, my friend and I were literally in tears as it was so profoundly breathtaking to watch. There’s just something about ALWs compositions that make them so memorable. The melodies are engraved into my memory for life!
I was there, on the field 35 years ago--right now! Feels like reliving a really cool dream watching it now. Myron Rosander and Gail Royer are somewhere smiling.
I saw this show my freshman year of highschool at dci south in Birmingham, Al. I was so amazed at this show and loved scv, we all did. Amazing, I was a drummer bass and snare later on.
This is still the benchmark. I want to drums along the rockies 2024 and none of the current band are even close to this... not even in the conversation.
My dad turned me onto this. Between this and Madison Scouts 1988 Malaguena! Wow. Wish I could travel back in time. Personally not down with all the electronics and vocals.
@@derekgross3571 ive talked to some vets who are more familiar with the situation, they really don't think vanguard's coming back, and even if they are, they don't think they'll be based out of santa clara anymore
@@arleydelaroche5430 due to financial strain, VMAPA has made the sudden decision to not field SCV this summer. they had previously announced that SCVC was being placed on indefinite hiatus as well
@katyornok63 82' was awsome, Contra here from Anaheim Kingsmen. 58 now and still have many visions of that long tour from Cerritos Falcon Stadium toward Montreal.

These are not Drum Corps, they are bands, they cannot compare with Riley Raiders, Yankee Rebels, Scout house The Princemen, The Hurricanes, Gay Blades, Connecticut Yankees, Skyliners The Sunrisers and the list goes on. They didn't need Vibes, Trombones, Guitars and extensive systems and all the other crap. The only true Drum and Bugle Corps that still exist is The Marine Drum and Bugle Corps from 8th & I Barracks.
This was before amplification and trombones... and these guys had a super clean company front at the end...... but that's ok. You can still be an angry old man.
They got jobbed in 1988. This 1989 version was payback for a piss poor decision. Madison’s 1988 iconic 7 plus minute Malagueña was not the show SCV or Devils had Nothing Madison did brought emotion other than the loud ending. SCV show had me in tears
Where are the silly poses and massive props? No scatter drill? And the hats are getting in the way of the performer's faces. I'm not seeing a whole lot of emoting from the performers. A truely sad show only for dinosaurs!
I will fight anyone who disagrees that this is probably the best show of DCI history. It changed the show style of drum corps forever

So much better than today’s dci that spend more time dancing around their instruments (that are placed on the field) than actually playing music.
As someone born in 2007, I actually agree with this, and that probably explains my fascination with 90s/2000s cavaliers

Gutted by the news about the 2023 season. I really hope they can pull through, Vanguard would be one hell of a loss for the Drum Corps community.

Same reason I’m watching. This is more shocking than the entire season cancellation of 2020. Hopefully 2024 brings back an even stronger Vanguard.
