John said "I don't remember writing that one." They really do sound like The Beatles. A lot.
I thought it WAS the Beatles at first! Had to look more closely. Wow!
I thought it was the Beatles .too. Then the DJ said Knickerbockers. So , I bought it.The singer has John Lennon down pat.
Better.
SÍ, DE HECHO TAMBIÉN YO PENSÉ QUE ERAN LOS BEATLES, LA PRIMERA VEZ QUE LOS ESCUCHÉ!
MUY BUENA CANCIÓN!!!
No kidding! 😱
My mother gave two of the Knickerbockers and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders a ride to the Fairgrounds in Louisville with half a dozen kids in the back of the car after they missed the bus from the Holiday Inn to the concert back in 1966. A group of kids saw them in our car as we approached the coliseum and started running after us. I was ten years old at the time, and I felt like I was in "A Hard Day's Night."
What a great story.
Great story 😊
Awesome! 🤪
What a memory! That's a precious memory! Thx fer Sharon!
lucky mom
I heard them live in 1965. They were the tightest band I've ever heard. They could play The Beatles' and the Beach boys' songs note for note. They had great harmonies.
YES, a GREAT TIGHT BAND - BUT Unfortunately- NO support/promotion from their dumb-ass record label : (
Glad you enjoyed the video : )
I was an 11 year old kid in Pittsburgh when I heard this song for the first time. Blew me away. Thanks for telling me that they really were that good.
Sad how you have a great band, but no help from the manager, label, or even encouragement from the parents. I think of so many like this, the Grape being just one. A monster album, then downhill fast.
A song that should get more airplay, on "Oldies Stations", and the '60's channel, on Sirius XM radio!!
Lucky You! Great tune and I was 15 in 65!
"Lies" is a song written by Beau Charles and Buddy Randell, performed by The Knickerbockers; the single was produced by Jerry Fuller. It reached #20 on the U.S. pop chart in 1965. It was featured on their 1966 album Lies and is famous for often being mistaken for a Beatles track due to its similarities to their style and harmonies.
Here is what original Knickerbockers member Beau Charles said about the song's behind-the-scenes story:
"We desperately tried to write something that sounded like the British Invasion'. We wrote 'Lies' in less than one half hour. We demo-ed it in New York." After a Jerry Fuller inspired re-arrangement, the track was recorded at Sunset Sound in West Hollywood with Bruce Botnick as the Engineer. Things were not quite right, so the multi-track master was taken to Leon Russell's house in Hollywood Hills. Jerry Fuller knew Leon and "Leon had this great little studio - just a four track". The band recorded the vocals there and overdubbed a new guitar part that was recorded from a beat up old Fender guitar amp that gave the guitar sound a meaty, edgy feel".
Thanks for the history nugget.
One correction, my brother & I arranged “lies”! Jerry Fuller came in one night to the Red Velvet & told me that we were recording “lies” in 2 days & to put it together & make it about 2:30 minutes! The original demo we did in NY was only 1:30! So John & I worked on it & I added the guitar solo & another verse & chorus. The day of the session we ran it by Buddy & he adjusted the lyrics to the new arrangement. It worked!! That night as we listened to a rough mix it was obvious that we had something. What a moment to remember! Thanks for your comments!
Yes. Essentially, they made a Beatles song with distortion before the Beatles did.
Around 1968 The Knickerbockers played a gig in Concord NC at a small teenage club. Remember it well ,several hundred kids packed like sardines. Great times to be a teenager.

@Beau Charles - I would love to know the details of your guitar parts on this recording. I take it the solo was an overdub, correct? Was it just one guitar track other than that? Nice gritty tones!

The best Beatles 'impersonators' to Ever Take the Stage. The lead singer even achieved the exacting nasal intonation of John Lennon's vocals.
''The lead singer even achieved the exacting nasal intonation of John Lennon's vocals.....,'' including "gull" for "girl."
He's not an impersonator. He's doing an impression, so if anything, he's an impressionist. An impersonator is someone who is trying to be someone else, typically with a criminal motive.
It might have been a one hit wonder,
but what a hit !!! The Beatles would have been proud to own it.

Guitar, bass and drums... and sax. Great stuff. Real rock.
I kept waiting for him to play that sax...
There's another video on CZcams that shows him actually playing the sax during the chorus.
This video just might have launched a movement of "air sax" but alas, it did not.
Jon Dann He strummed it throughout.
"Short Shorts" by The Royal Teens (1958 #3) features Billy playing a lot of sax.
The few times over the years that I would hear this on the radio, I thought it was the Beatles, which is the greatest compliment I can pay a group. (I also think that part of this song sounds like "That Thing You Do.")
Hey Lin, Even John Lennon famously said he like it and that he thought they sounded like The Beatles.

Agree completely-- *especially* about the resemblance (in one part) to "That Thing You Do." Another great tribute to the Beatles.
This song out-Beatle'd the Beatles in 1965. While the fab four were testing the limits of the studio, these relatively clean-cut American boys were all loud and proud with this timeless chunk of rock and roll abandon. Not much even today is this much fun to listen to.
Song has a frenetic quality to it.

I was 14 when it came out but didn't hear it till it appeared on the Nuggets album (it was never a hit here in UK). Tracks with this amount of energy never grow old, they just mature like fine wine.
Starts out just like "I want to hold your hand".
We all thought this was a Beatles song when it first came out. This is the first time I have seen film of them. I have never heard another song from them.
Well, in my humble opinion, "Mid-1960's hard rock" is a term more applicable to bands like Cream, but this was a tasty little pop song. I still enjoy it.

These guys, the Beatles, the Byrds were the first bands to use the Rickebacker guitar for their sound and to mimic the sound of other bands of the era. This dude is playing a 360 series Rick, so easy for Beatles to hear a similar sound to their own....same type of short, tight, punchy, lyrical, distinctive guitar hook, etc. Love those Ricks.

Stands on its own as a brilliant, original mid-'60's rock & roll song. The Beatles in this era were still performing some cover versions of American songs which had inspired their own great originals.
They also recorded "Roll Over Beethoven". I remember hearing an interview with them and the question came up about how they sure sounded like the Beatles. The answer that one of them gave was that "We think that we have our own sound". LOL
Well - It's TRUE. They DID have 'there own sound'.. and THAT sound, was VERY similar to The Beatles... "Denial, it ain't just a river in Egypt..." LOL Indeed...!!!! : )
