My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.
The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

What do you use shell voicings for? 🙂
Triads are amazing for Jazz chord! czcams.com/video/Ja-s0LIigak/video.html
Nice
Forty nine seconds of information that will improve EVERYTHING a guitarist (or other instrumentalist) plays or WILL play. I've always loved Music Theory / Theories. Being a Nerd opens a lot of doors !
Really really appreciate this. After 38 years and, now I know what 7 and 9 means. Finally figured it out.. and the jazz part as well. Bless your soul
Glad it was useful!
Thank you for taking the time to teach me this. I am a student of music and I have gratitude for you. Blessings
I started playing guitar 8 years ago and never was really interested in jazz, more in blues, rock, funk etc, but now that I understand a little bit more of music, jazz is the most expressive music style someone can learn, there are no limitations
Sharing knowledge of this quality is just beautiful.
Glad you think so!
60 seconds with Jens and you’ve got a lesson for the week. Thanks Jens!
Thanks
So interesting and helpful, sound beautiful!!! 🎶🍀🎸
Thank you
Best jazz guitar instructor on the interweb 👍 appreciate your work Jens
This channel is a gem, man. Always makes me put my phone down and pick up the guitar.
Thanks for all you do to bring jazz to the world, Jens!
Thank you 🙂
Jazz guitar makes me feel alive thank you so much
Go for it 🙂
Shell voicings certainly are worth getting under your fingers as a starting place for a lot of music. Thank you Jens, I always get a lot from your videos although many are too advanced for me.
Thanks!
Thank you for your support! 🙏🙂
Man I need to learn this. Ty!
Go for it!
Thans Jens! I now know the dyaz chords
Great! 👍
this is so awesome
Glad you like it!
These tutorials have opened a realm of possibilities for me.🤯
Beautiful
More of this please for beginners
Glad it was useful 🙂
Useful!
Glad you think so!
Thanks a bunch for this! I play bass rather than guitar, but its still applicable
Thank you maestro! 🙏
Greetings from Spain
Glad you like it 🙂
Very useful and easy to understand, even with my rudimentary knowledge of theory.
It's excellent
Glad you like it!
A great reminder, thanks.

Thanks a lot! Info really helps
I love this sound
You are an excellent teacher and an incredible guitar player! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Very grateful for you, Jens! I keep thinking I want to be one or another kind of guitarist. Then I learn these jazz chords, and I fall in love every time.
I love love LOVE the walking baseline one
Thumbs up sir

Just found a whole new way to play
Great! Go for it 😁
Hi, would love to see more videos regarding shell voicing ^_^
Here are a few: czcams.com/video/zH4uQYgDotM/video.html
@@JensLarsen thank you
Wow I literally coulda had this video 20 years ago and I woulda actually “got it”.
I am a intermediate jazz guitarist and I’ve played with my Strat for a while and I’m looking for a budget friendly jazz guitar. What do you recommend? Thanks!
Look at Ibanez, Epiphone and Eastman. 2nd hand gets you more for the money 🙂
Hi all, do you know if @JensLarsen made a structured course on Jazz for beginners?
I did 🙂 You can request an invitation here: bit.ly/JazzGtRm
@@JensLarsen ah fantastic! I'll check it out asap
I'm sorry if this is a terribly naive question. I thought a chord was root, 3rd, 5th, plus 7.. then extensions. Shell voicings don't need a 5th? Thank you for your patience with me. :-)
The 5th is the most boring note of a chord. It's main function is to 'fatten up' the Root (hence 'power chords'). It may be left out with no detriment to the rest of the chord. Adding a 7th and / or other extensions brings about a lot more colour. Such colour(s) can be heard 'vertically' as chords or 'horizontally' as arpeggios, lines et cetera. In the latter case, the 'colours' are easier to notice / hear and shine through quite beautifully.💚
Your question is not naive. It's good to ask questions. I still do.
@@kevindonnelly761 thank you, very helpful!!
@@chrisdunbar5995 You are welcome 🙂
No, you can leave out the root and still have the important characteristics of the chord in there. If you play a song with shell voicings you can probably hear it :)
When Herb Ellis says he plays blues and/or jazz lines out of chord shapes how does that work? Can you explain his process? It looks like he uses shell Voicings when he plays chords sometimes. In that area where he plays the chord he then shows the chord tones, the scale for what ever the root, then the diatonic scale for that root? And then proceeds to play lines in the general area of the chord but it looks like he leaves the general area of the chord shape also? What does the chord shape have to do with the line or phrase he is playing? What am I missing? Thanks in advance.
aku skandal- Hujan band, guna chord ni
The first chord is sextape from deftones
Ok, not the first place I would look for Jazz chords 😁 But I do like their chord progressions quite often.
Why does the 5th, which you removed from the major triad, get removed specifically for this kind of voicing?
Because it isn't important for the sound of the chord
you can transpose the shapes right?
Yes, certainly 🙂
how do you work out what fingers to use, and how to pluck them with a pic
You do that while practicing 🙂
if you look up chords online, you can find diagrams that recommend finger placements. usually though, it's just best to go with whatever feels comfortable and whatever will make transitions to other chords/notes easier
@@JensLarsen it’s easier to use fingers versus pick for g7
added also A7 next to it...
What is the difference between "Shell Chords" and triads?
The notes.
A triad is root, 3rd and 5th.
A shell voicing is root, 3rd, 7th
@@JensLarsen thank you for clarifying!
Are shell chords limited to a jazz setting? Like for example, can i use them on blues chords or rock power chords?
You have those in other styles as well. Very few things are limited to a single style :)
I agree with what Jens says here. You can use shell voicing chords in many styles of Music - except, Power Chords have a fifth, Shell Voicing Chords do not.
Hey guys I have a question... does the g7 chord displayed here have an inverted 3rd? Sorry, I'm not great with theory
What is an inverted 3rd?
@@JensLarsen I'm not really sure if it's a real concept, I just always thought the 3rd was "supposed" to be an octave lower than shown here
@@zanderjam9111 That is not really a thing. You can place notes in many ways and it will still work 🙂
@@JensLarsen thanks Jens! Your channel is awesome. Also wondering what would you call the voicing difference? Is there any word for it?
Love ❤️ ❤️🙏🙏🎶🎵🎼🎸✌️🍀👌🇮🇱
At the first chord I thought of deftones
🎉🎉🎉
fireworks
Goddammit, I really wanted to use those chords for a song… but I realised why it felt pop song-y. Doja cat’s kiss me more 😫😫😫
What is that? At the final, Chord melody?
Harmonized Basslines 🙂
Im a metal and rock player my question is how can I play along to a complicated jazz drum beat I find it very hard i can play to a normal drum beat but with jazz drum beats i get lost
Where can we find this lesson in PDF, please ?
Here you go: www.patreon.com/posts/best-jazz-chords-72463168
we have a guitar laying around the house so I tried to play these, I have average hands and I can barely do the Dm7, I have to twist my entire wrist and make really uncomfortable things to get it, idk how I'm supposed to this, any tips?
It is probably about how you sit with the guitar, but I can't tell from a comment. Maybe try this instead czcams.com/video/P-P-gM7VJx4/video.html
That is some dope-ass shit.
🙏
do you teach this in your course as well ?
No, the Roadmap is more about soloing. First melody, then harmony 🙂
What is the Best jazz guitar for a beginner
Maybe look at a 2nd hand Ibanez, Eastman or Epiphone?
how do i remember all these on frets?
You don’t remember specific chords without understanding the theory behind it all.
That would be like trying to remember individual words without knowing the alphabet and how to spell.
What about the pedals,
How does he change chords so quickly?
Practice 🙂
i love shorts about this stuff because you don't have the time to start a 20 minute talk show about music theory from the start. You illustrate a concept, and if you have the knowledge necessary to understand it and implement it, good, otherwise study more and come back.
Yes, though I actually get the opposite complaint ten times as often 😂
Does anybody know what tuning this is in?
Standard
Is Cmaj7(9) just Cmaj9?
Where u from?
👍👏🥰
Im not a musician and i wanna ask, why do jazz always sounds like their notes are off?
Why do you continue to make this all seem so easy?
Gave up a long time ago 😂
And this is the beginner, I need a private teacher 😂😢
Please Jens, come on and play. Love your videos, but would love to see you just play music as well.
Go find the playlist on my channel
@@JensLarsen thank you, didn't know. Great!
I tried to learn negative harmony while not knowing what a key is, the stuff you publish are actually intelligible to me mostly.
That's great 🙂
This seems so easy that it feels like cheating lol
Can you just play with tabs without saying anything?
Can you just find another channel to watch?
Play random notes. Preferably chromatic. It's Jazz.
ive heard 3000 jazz chords and they all sound the same 😂
There is a fix for that: Ear training
I'll try to explain myself better. I asked if you have any method on all the topics you cover in the short articles.
Not on chords, more on soloing but I think that is where you want to start.
It is difficult to give too specific advice because everybody is different and at different levels, but maybe check out this post: jenslarsen.nl/how-to-learn-jazz-guitar-suggestions-to-begin-studying/
