I have seen this kind of poaching. Taking buckets and buckets of fish. But the people doing it, all of Chinese heritage, seem to have nice cars and gear. They enjoy fishing with nets as an activity, and likely they sell most of their catch. This nice documentary ignores that dozens of people catching buckets and buckets of juvenile fish may impact the population of those species and their predators. Many fish are not resident, but migratory, so the contamination may not be the main issue as with crabs. There is very little enforcement where I go. there have been tensions and fight between old-timers who go fishing with a rod and reel, and newcomer Chinese who overfish with nets.
I like this documentary but I think it overplays the food insecurity aspect, while there is an environmental impact.

lots of those turtles are baby ones turned loose, on the west coast here mitten crabs have been turned loose and or in bilge water in ships and clog up pumping stations, instead of allowing them to be harvested, the state does nothing, but striped bass that had been planted and non native are fished for sport, so money talks, instead of care taking of the environment..and the russians have been poaching sturgeon for the caviar eggs illegaly and there is so much mercury on the bottom of the rivers you can only eat so many fish

If you have never been poor I mean truly poor you have no idea what you’ll do to obtain food. The poaching must be stopped that’s indisputable but we can still be humane about the solution. And yes those people who are not poor but still see it as a source to feed others and sell to restaurants they must be more than fined.
