  • This is a step-by-step video on how to build a flemish twist bowstring for a recurve or longbow. This is a homemade jig, on any jig you have to end up setting your own markings. I recommend buying a 3 rivers flemish string jig to learn and then building a more heavy duty one. This is how I make custom traditional archery strings for customers at my pro-shop, Ohio Premier Archery & Sports, in Middlefield, OH.

I watched a lot of Fleishman string videos and do not have a jig. I started by making small practice strings (1 or 2 feet long ) practicing the twists making loops etc. Once I understood the twisting and loop blending, making the full size string was fun. You can practice with small twine or any cord scraps laying around. Most videos don't mention doing small practice loops and twists but jump you right into full size strings which can be intimidating and frustrating.... my first full length string went very well. My small practice strings made nice wrist bands for my kids!!!👍🇺🇸

Yeah, and when you are done making the bowstring you can play cribbage.

do you twist always the same direction for both loops and after the backtwist? i mean ,it seems you are doing it to the right for all the process, the strands twisted to the right and then the bundle to the left .. is that right?

Do you make the Flemish twist Rogue bowstrings? I bought 2 from 3 Rivers and they’re awesome. If not how would I go about getting one of yours?

I do not, Rogue makes them in house. As of right now, I sell them in person out of the shop.

Just did everything I think the same as your video, but when I do that twist at the very end one end of the other seems to want to come apart, Any clue why?

Sounds like you probably need to add more twists on the first end loop after bringing the bundles back together. I also place a clamp on the end of the flemish portion(the 10 or so twists after closing the loop and going past the tag ends). Another thing I like to do is, once I've completed the end loop (as well as the the 10 or so twists after closing the loop and going past the tag ends) place the end loop on a nail and give it a nice tug to set everything in place. Let me know if that answers your question.

Can you gine board dimensions for your bow jig? Are there plans available?

    2 ⅞" not 3 ⅞" @ 9:40

Believe him, you can’t use too much wax.
