  • On March 1, the Diocese of Orange San Jose Filipino Ministry and clergy of Alagad Ni Maria (Disciples of Mary) hosted a special Mass and procession, celebrated by Bishop Kevin Vann, at Christ Cathedral featuring a replica of the Poon Nazareno statue.
The Poon Nazareno, also known as the Black Nazarene, is a dark statue depicting Jesus carrying the cross en route to His Crucifixion. The original Poon Nazareno is said to have been carved by an anonymous artist in Mexico and brought to the Philippines by missionaries in 1606.
The Poon Nazareno has millions of devotees around the world, notably Filipino Catholics, and many attribute miraculous healing properties to it.
The Diocese of Orange’s Poon Nazareno is a replica that was donated by a devotee from the Philippines who was miraculously cured of cancer.
In Orange County, volunteers are being recruited to form the Hijos del Nazareno and Kababaihan ng Poon Nazareno - men and women who will care for the Poon Nazareno, which has been moved from Christ Cathedral to St. Pius V parish in Buena Park and stays there through March 16.
On Jan. 9, the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene, millions gather in Manila wearing maroon and yellow for a religious procession known as Traslacion. This year’s feast gathered an estimated 6.5 million people for a 15-hour procession.
