Force long-term sick to look for work? Feat. Carrie Grant & Mike Parry | Jeremy Vine

  • Should the long term sick be forced to look for work?
That's what Alan Milburn, a former Labour health secretary, under Tony Blair thinks...
Calling for fundamental reform to the system he says, the long-term sick must be required to look for jobs to deal with unsustainable welfare costs and reduce the country’s “toxic” reliance on immigration,
Is this the right approach? Or is this unfair on those with ongoing health issues?

They're talking about mental health issues, if you put those with mental health issues in difficult situations its like a pressure cooker waiting to explode. It may not be just themselves who are hurt but their coworkers and indeed members of the public. I suffer with mental health issues and when i have an episode i can indeed lash out, im 17 stone so definitely not easy to control when this happens, if theyre signed off its for a reason. Those who have nothing to lose are dangerous

    Pay a proper LIVING Wage,
So peoples will take pride and want to work,
Minimum wage with Zero hours contract do not pay the Bills, and leads to mental health issues, which leads to going off Sick.

I think she was spot on, she did not mention any names!
She should know what she is talking about, and i agree it does seem trendy now to say i suffer with a mental health condition in some way or another!!
Everyone has got either depression, anxiety ADHD, some type of disorder or syndrome!!
Growing up i never suffered any of this nonsense, i loved life, and there were times when things happened in my personal life when i got really down, but you eventually get over whatever it is, life goes on!!
When i lost my Dad nearly 30 years ago now i was heartbroken, devasted, had 5 weeks off work, but went back, had to get on with it, still wasn't over it!!
This year one of the worst years of my life, had to get some anti depressants, but i will be OK, i do not want counselling or any of that nonsense, it will get better, life goes on!!

You can't just assume everyone who can't work is skiving. There will always be some people like that. There are plenty of people in work who shirk their responsibilities. However, there are many who genuinely need help and are waiting ages for treatment. Mental health services in the UK are abysmal. Many employers don't want to employ people with health issues, because they are a business and want to maximise profits. It's a very difficult problem, but just calling everyone lazy doesn't solve anything.
