Very helpful. I have using removing the blackspot leaves and then using a fungicide. This has not been as effective. I will be defoliating a couple of my rose bushes with black spot next; I didnt' know about defoliating.
This is a great video. I just received an own root 2qt Vanessa Bell from DA covered in what looks like reddish dots in all of the foliage. FedEx left the roses in the box in the sun despite my front porch being covered. I’m going to defoliate it and I know it will do well. It was too much heat and humidity for the rose in the box. I have no doubt it will bounce back.
I just did this to two of my bushes that were really suffering from black spot. I cut them back from 9 feet to about 6 feet and pruned the extra crossing and overcrowding growth too once I had them stripped beacuse I figured it was a good time to try to reset them and open them up while they were "naked" anyway. I hope it works and I didnt go too crazy. They were already naked on the bottom 60% anyway due to the black spot.

@@Dessyluvs Great idea! I’ll post a video as they bloom. This is a video to several I just bought from Proven Winners, my fav companion vendor. I use a lot of salvia and catnip for purples, as well as clematis, and soft hedge varieties that are easy to trim. Years ago I used to group red and pink roses separately, but now I am enjoying the contrast as I walk each day.

Yikes! I've only used alcohol when going from bush to bush, not every cut. There's never enough one can learn about caring for roses. Thanks so much. Looking forward to seeing that rose after 2 weeks.
PS I'm in Italy (Chianti) and last year I volunteered to take care of all the condo roses in addition to my own. The condos are all shrubs with serious black spot they've had for years. I've been removing leaves since early spring, but we're now at the end of May. I hope I can continue without damaging the rose. Another thing: The roses have a long bloom time here. My Gertrude Jekyll bloomed into January 2022. Can I strip ALL of the leaves off the roses in. say end of November, early December? Every single rose, every single leaf?

I am really loving your videos! I live on the coast of North Carolina and the weather here is very hot and humid. We get a lot of little random afternoon showers which my roses hate. I have a huge garden full of roses and we struggle with blackspot here so badly that it doesn't even have to rain for all the roses to get covered in it! I personally have found that since it is so bad here that I won't completely defoliate the rose unless it is a very bad case. I spray every 7 days with fungicide and it has made the BIGGEST difference. If you use this formula it completely kills it and keeps your roses perfect for the whole season as long as you stay consistent with your spray schedule. This is a recipe that I got from Witherspoon Rose Culture and its been amazing:
1 gallon water
5 teaspoons Captan 50%
2.5 teaspoons Thiomyl 50%
2 tablespoons Bonide Systemic Insecticide
0.5 teaspoons Spreader Sticker
Mix well and spray before temperatures reach 86°
Mix fresh batch each time you spray and spray every 7-10 days.
I only use the insecticide when I see a serious bug issue. The fungicide treatment wont harm any animals or pollinators. I still pick off individual leaves if they get blackspot and I keep the bed around the roses clean as well. I know a lot of people don't like the idea of spraying, but if you really struggle with it, this spray is the only thing I have found to 100% work so far:) I hope this was helpful!

Can I do Defoliate this time of the month
I have a ton of hybrid T’s which are apparently most susceptible to black spot, yet the only rose that gives me any issues is my double delight hybrid T, I keep up on it every day and it performs fantastic, and I keep it completely defoliated 6-8 inches from the ground, yet in my bed with other T’s I have no issues, the other roses I have will get a leaf or 2 but never truly spread like the double delight, and I’m in south jersey where it’s very humid zone 7-7b

TheRose Geek, what do I do with my rose in a garden bed when it has some blackspot on the lower 2/3 of the shrub but it's not that visible yet and is only ugly at the very bottom of the shrub? Should I remove only the ugly, yellow ones or all of the affected leaves? Stripping away all of the affected leaves would instantly leave the rose looking bald and miserable. If we're serious about not spraying, this radical defoliation seems to serve no purpose as I'm pretty sure the leaves above the 2/3 leavel already have some microscopic blackspots on them which I'm sure will enlarge and spread pretty soon in the rainy weather over here. Getting rid of all of the leaves with the tiniest sign of blackspot, without spraying the roses afterwards only seems to make it sooner that the rose gets bald and leggy.
Am I getting things wrong? What should I do? Please help.

I agree! It gets easier each time you do it because you will see how quickly the leaves come back. I do this once a month for my roses.
