  • My review of the new Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water!
    It's a great looking movie, but it has a bunch of issues and it's WAY TOO LONG!

    Honestly idk how you could be bored when it’s 3 hours of mind blowing cgi. I was entertained throughout the entire movie, partly because of the cgi. Yes the story is basic af, the villain is generic, and there are lots of plot holes, but I genuinely don’t care when it comes to avatar. The thing I liked was the family aspect of the movie and I think that kinda carried the story. It’s just a good experience to see in theaters.

    Sheesh. Sounds like you fell asleep towards the end... The characters changed drastically by the time the credits rolled. Even Quatrich (the decision bring him back I was initially against) felt more interesting this time around. Yeah, the simplicity of the story was a bit underwhelming, but I was satisfied with it by the end, and I'm actually interested to see where it goes now.

    • @IaMD.B.
      @IaMD.B.  Před rokem +1

      I agree that they made Quatrich slightly more 3-deminsional in this one, I agree. But the entirety of the third act felt more like set-up for the next installment, rather than a meaningful conclusion of something.
      SPOILERS:
      I didn't care about the son dying, it was perdictable and it was the son the film made less of an effort to make us care about anyway. The film begins with Quatrich chasing Jake, and it ends implying that he'll just continue chasing Jake. Jake changes from "We have to run to protect our family" to "We have to fight to protect our family". Doesn't feel like a meaningful change to me.
      Basically, just not that great of a film, but it wasn't terrible and I didn't hate it either, so 5/10 for me.

      @@IaMD.B. That's a fair opinion. To me at least, Cameron's films have always had a predictable quality about them, even his best ones (Aliens, T2), but they are great at being emotionally effective... Predictable or not, I DID feel something in that death scene, largely due to Saldana's performance. The last hour is pretty much the only time I felt any investment in the characters in either Avatar film, which is why I came away feeling alright about the movie overall. To each their own and all that...

    I honestly really loved the movie because it allows you to just bask in these gorgeous environments. My My only issue was that is was so obviously setting up a sequel so nothing really comes to a close. I'd give it a 8.5/10.

It had it's flaws but it was beautiful and I didn't get bored for the entire runtime. I gave it a 7.5/10 with my friends after walking out of the cinema. Noting great but definitely not a bad movie.

  • @AndrewDeneHelbig
    @AndrewDeneHelbig Před rokem

    I totally agree with you that the movie was exhausting. Amazing visuals do not make a story. About 30 minutes of seeing Pandora was enough for me to not be impressed by visuals alone, and then I needed some real story to happen to actually enjoy the world that was being presented. Spectacle vs substance, I personally don't care much at all for spectacle. Seeing explosions and robots vs blue people doesn't matter to me if it's not backed up by some great story design and understanding some believable and well thought out motivations.
    I think that the movie was far too long and kind of a rehash of the first movie. Honestly, none of the characters have very interesting or memorable personalities and seem like they are exactly the same as the first movie, if not worse. Really can't believe the brought back the caricature of a drill sergeant back for this movie. He was overused in the first movie and here they tried to develop him a bit with having a son, but he still feels like a ridiculous cartoon character of a villain. Not going to see Avatar 3 at this point, was very disappointed.

    I love it how as a human beings rather to connect with more our roots and spirits, we are getting mechanical every single time! Of something is of slow paced and let us teach about that, we mock that in an effortless way, despite of being to sit calmly put our patience and to feel the point of view of that and later to bring all together what that want to convey or say! As someone who is visionary and letting us to teach or project that vision infront of us is not anykind of joke or mocked thing that is done in simply casual way!

    This is actually refreshing. I did not like the first Avatar either and wanted to give this a chance but I just did not enjoy it that much. I thought the dialogue was cringey and honestly Jake's kids getting in trouble constantly got on my nerves and I did not like any of the kid characters. I think all the whale stuff was fluff that could have been cut unless the whale is now a main character we'll see in future films. The only times I felt anything was when Zoe Saldana was emoting pain/sadness

  • @chuckpoore

    I probably should not comment here, since I have not seen Avatar 2, and don't plan on it. But the reason is because I DID see Avatar, and that's why I wasn't interested in seeing this one. And since you mentioned it, I think it's fair game. For me, I was less impressed with the visuals of Avatar. Yes, I recognized it as really great CGI and it was pretty to look at. But I never felt I was watching a real place. It had a similar effect on me to watching something like Toy Story, where the animation is great, but your brain knows you aren't watching anything but a computer generated environment. It has no substance. It was a big difference with something like LOTR. Jackson made use of CGI also, but it was mixed in with practical FX and real sets. The CGI was mainly to extend sets and created backgrounds. He did use extensive CGI in some of the large battle scenes, granted. But since those scenes are between other scenes with real sets and real actors, you felt like you were seeing a real place. For me, watching Avatar was like watching a high-end video game. Cool to look at, but it never immersed me in a way that I felt like I was really there. Plus it was too long and I was bored with it in about 30 minutes. I have assumed Avatar 2 was more of the same, so I've never bothered. Maybe I'll watching on Amazon streaming one day just for curiosity, but only if I don't have to pay for it, or maybe renting it for 3.99. I'm not paying a theater price for it.
