    • @TurfTherapy
      @TurfTherapy  Před 2 lety +35

The plant is great as a fertilizer and has been used for many years for medicinal purposes. The problem is that many people are self-medicating without knowing the risk that comes with the plant itself. I didn't put this out to scare you but to inform you of the pros and cons and my perspective on the plant. Many licensed horticultural doctors can properly advise you on whether you should use this for medicinal uses but if you have any predispositions to kidney or liver issues, I caution you on following random people's claims of this being a miracle plant. I hope this clarifies and Thanks for watching! 😁🌱

Yeah, are any of those independent scholarly studies, or are they just filled with opinions? As we are taught in school, I look for cited sources and credible research. I have heard many anecdotal wonders about this plant, with no credible research supporting it. Do as you wish, though.

    • @TurfTherapy

@Critical Strike Forge Furthermore, let's look at this logically if this plant is capable of the wonders that are claimed. The capitalistic nature of Big Pharma would have kicked into high gear and synthesized this to make trillions of dollars off of it years ago. My elders always told me that if it sounded too good to be true, it usually was not true. But I digress. As I said. Do what you wish my friend ✌️🏾🌱

It’s called Bocking 14, not Blocking. 😁. And the alkaloids in it are extremely mild, especially in the leaves, compared to other plants in the same family, but Comfrey has been lumped in with all the rest.
It also needs to be grown in the ground rather than a pot. The whole point of Comfrey is that it sends deep roots down to pick up the rich array of nutrients from the subsoil. That’s what makes it such a useful plant.

I am so grateful for Comfrey. I have True Comfrey, Symphytum Officinalis, it is the most beneficial garden/farm plant for us. True comfrey doesn't spread via root it spreads through seed drop and it produces seeds several times through the growing season so you do have to keep up on it. I make an all natural very potent fertilizer, Comfrey compost tea, and my tomatoes, potatoes, onions thrive with it high in phosphorus and potassium good nitrogen too. Stinging nettle is a great composter, fertilizer too and very high in nitrogen and a good people food too loaded with protein and nutrients galore. I have arthritis and have been using Comfrey Salve, poultice and even Comfrey Tea made with the dried leaves for digestive issues on occasion. Most Homeopath MDS still use topical Comfrey but are not allowed to prescribe for internal use. I don't care for traditional medical practices and only use nature for healing so I don't follow the FDA guidelines.

Don't knock it till you've tried it. 😊

Thank you for this, love all the different tomatoes! Have planted a tub of comfrey from seed about three years ago in a tub & doing great, think they need lots of root room, especially the depth & its a thirsty plant.. Its really good for the wildlife, bees especially love the flowers.. The leaves can be soaked in water for 4 to 6 weeks to make a really great strong fertiliser. Only a tiny splash to a gallon of water & free!! ... Wilted clean leaves can be bandaged onto sprains & bruises (not onto broken skin) Healing time is fast.. Yes it can be poisonous but you would need to ingest quite a lot over several consecutive days/weeks.. It is not an edible thing anyway.

The Bocking 14 type of comfrey does not spread I haveseveral of mine planted in several places-in ground and they die back in the winter and grow right back up in the spring. I grow them in the ground because it has a long taproot that goes deep down and sequesters minerals from the soil way beyond the where most of our plant's roots can reach so, when we chop and drop the comfrey leaves, they get way more minerals from the depths of the soil that can't really be gotten so easily
from a containerized plant. If you plant your containerized comfrey in the ground you will be happily surprised to see how much more robust it'll grow for you.

The roots go 8 feet deep and even more. This is the reason why it has so many nutrients, because it taps deep into the earth to get nutrients that our top soil just doesn’t have normally. So this is one reason why where ever you plant it, make sure your good with it there. Cause you won’t get rid of it.😂

Thank you for alerting people to the fact that they should not eat Comfrey. However, I have made a wonderful salve from Comfrey, cacao butter, coconut oil, beeswax and essential oils (those mentioned specifically for pain), and I can tell you that the salve was really great! The leaves make a wonderful fertiliser. You can add them to your compost (speeds up de-composition), or soak leaves in a bucket of water for a while and use the liquid. Be aware - the liquid will have a very strong odour so you may have to cover it. I would anyway, to protect it from dogs, children, little critters like lizards and bees, etc. Hope this helps someone. Blessings to all.

That was a flawed RAT study where they fed nothing BUT comfrey extract. Not the natural leaf, not in nature where they would select from many different foods. It’s the similar case with their Vit A experiencements because, they used SYNTHETIC vit. A and only fed that until the animal died. Animal source is the only Vit. A that should be consumed, called (retinal) . Plant “Vit. A” or beta carotene is called (pre-cursor) Vit. A, which means many more steps inside the body has to work to turn it into retinal Vit. A. FDA will sell your corn syrups high-fructose all day long. Most poisonous addictive substance even more than cocaine.

First I've heard of the supposed cancer causing agent in it. I have heard it's advisable not to eat it because of liver damage but anytime you misuse a drug....even a herbal drug it can be dangerous. But I hear it's great for chop and drop. You did say it was high in nitrogen which is great. I bought two a few months ago but they are still in pots. Thanks for the info!

    • @karenzupanic718

The 'danger' is BS and designed to denigrate it and keep people AWAY from something that has helped mankind for centuries. An Australian CSIRO scientist 'found more PAs' in it than anyone before. Same guy misquoted amounts from other research in his paper - wrong info that has never been corrected.
You have to know Big Pharma funds studies to diss (denigrate) anything they don't want you using and/or finding out how effective it is.
I have collected old books on comphrey...pigs with the HEALTHIEST livers (the organ the studies reckon show damage from comphrey) the butcher had ever seen.
It is the only plant that draws Vit B12 from the soil. The only multi-cropping plant that could feed animals and people in 3rd world countries.
Just like they did with laetrile (vit b17 from apricot kernels) they tell you has cyanide and will kill you. What they don't tell you is that ONLY the CANCER cells have the enzyme that breaks down laetrile into cyanide (& kills only the cancer cell as a result). Normal cells do NOT have tge enzyme to break laetrile down so are fine. It is the most targeted cancer therapy ever..yet they make sure everyone thinks it is poisonous.
it's a brilliant strategy - by Big Pharma - to spread MIS-information about comphrey, and STUPIDLY people repeat it, instead of investigating it for themselves.
You can dry it, powder it and eat it..with no ill effects. it is called "all heal" and "knitbone" for a reason. Also put in olive oil and heat up or put in sun to extract what the leaves contain. Rub resulting oil on bruises, varicose veins scratches and watch them heal rapidly.
Don't swallow unquestioningly all you are told by people repeating what they were told. Research it for yourself, like I have. Try it externally first. if you have internal issues, powder it, mix 1/2 teaspoon with eg yoghurt (yep, tastes like grass) and watch your issues lessen and go away.
if worried get bloods done (re liver function) before and after taking for a while. test it yourself.
I would only be worried if I shoved 5800 leaves (the equiv of how they dosed baby rats to produce one with a liver tumour) into my mouth at one time.
1/2 teaspoon dried comphrey is about 1 very large leaf). FYI. At 1/2 teaspoon, that is 11,600 days that is years before you will ingest what they injected (note diff route of administration too) into BABY rats for this one experiment.
see how they fool you with 'the science' you religiously accept at face value from those science 'oracles'.
pS I am a scientist (biochemist)..and I dislike being lied to be established interests.

I bought one in a pot and planted it round the side and a year later it was 3 feet across, it died right back after flowering, but regrew again from the original center and its possibly same size to a little bigger in second year. To me it looks beautiful deep green, and I regularly use the older leaves munched up a bit to fertilize other plants. Some plants grow very robust from having comfrey leaves crumpled up and or just placed on the soil around the plant.

There are a number of sources on the internet. Be aware of the different characteristics of the different varieties. True Comfrey is cheap to purchase as seeds. It is cheap because it is easily propagated (and is therefore VERY invasive). The bocking varieties (b14 and b4) are the hybrids that have sterile seeds. More difficult to propagate, these varieties are more expensive. These varieties are sold as root cuttings, crowns and plants. In addition to the medicinal properties (it is called knitbone due to it's reputed ability to speed the healing of broken bones and is also supposedly good for arthritic joints) and benefits as a fertilizer, it is also good fodder for critters. True Comfrey and bocking 4 are well liked, some folks say that bocking 14 isn't liked by rabbits and chickens because it is too bitter. So we have a multi-use plant that is well worth the cost if you choose the hybrids.

I dropped a steppingstone on my big toe. In Flip Flops. It hurt so bad. I found myself cursing like a sailor. I was sure I crushed it. I wrapped a comfrey leaf around my toe. 2 HOURS later the pain was almost gone. This was last summer. Today my toe is completely normal. Comfrey is one of the most awesome plants. I have heard of people drinking tea from Comfrey with no bad effects. I wouldn't make a soup or salad from it. Its best use is external. Salves are great for pain. I use the leaves in my compost. My plants thrive. If you are afraid of using it then don't but it has so many good benefits it would be a shame to miss out.
