When I lived in Taiwan, I discovered a Japanese Fancy Feast style catfood that looked & smelled like real food!
I'd look at my cats' "grilled salmon in prawn aspic" (actual hunks of grill-marked salmon lightly glazed in aspic, would look right at home on a fancy appetizer tray), then at my "back-of-the-fridge veggie ramen surprise!" and offer to switch, but they would vehemently refuse. Little brats.

The first time I had sex was interrupted by my ex's cat. She laid me down and I came face to face with two giant yellow eyes. That's when we learned that her cat could open the door if there was something on the handle for her to pull. She promptly shooed her cat away, but I wound up laughing so hard we had to take an intermission.

The cat food thing makes sense if you know that humans have 18x as many taste buds as cats.
As obligate carnivores, they determined what’s good for them based on looks and smell more than taste. Wildcats want to eat food that looks and smells like a fresh corpse. How it tastes is basically irrelevant.
Meanwhile humans eat a lot of plants and need a refined pallet to tell the difference between plants full of nutrients and energy, and plants that we can’t digest. (Fruit is often delicious, stems are usually not)
Looking it up, the main thing cats agree on his that the closer to body temperature their food is, the better.
