    There is no equivalent to Texas A&M. I'm a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, my son graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, my son-in-law's brother graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, and all of those institutions are amazing. My two eldest daughters graduated from Texas A&M, and as proud as I am of our military academies, Texas A&M is something very special. In short, Texas A&M is about patriotism and positiveity,

      I inadvertently completed my previous comment. If you're feeling depressed or down about anything, just spend a day or two on the campus at Texas A&M in College Station, where it is a tradition for all students to say "howdy" to any passer-by. It's the most positive and uplifting place I've ever experienced.

    Back when I was in high school, I was in the marching band. One year the team we played was from a large city high school.
    Big school from a very wealthy district. We were a relatively small rural school,our whole band had about 15-20 members, theirs had at least a couple of hundred. Blew us away. Best we could do was just march out, play a couple of songs then march off. They came on and did some amazing formations. Embarrassed the hell out of us. But on the plus side our team ended up winning. So there was that.

  • @hardtackbeans9790
    @hardtackbeans9790 Před 2 lety +18

    They are good. Some formations, I believe it is their crossing pattern they have to turn a certain way or knock someone down. If someone hasn't told you yet. Texas A&M is a military school and the band is more of precision military marching style. Ohio State is more of a conceptual marching band. Drawing ideas on the field in other words. It is just my opinion that A&M is better marching & Ohio St has better musicians & will play more music you are familiar with. Both are top notch marching bands just in different ways. Other big schools might shock you also. Even some of the high schools have huge bands. 6:55 Crashing has happened before. 😁 Mostly when they practice. It would usually happen in something a little more difficult than this though. Guys with the Sousaphones are always slower. LOL!! Sure. USC (Uni Southern California), Michigan, both UT's (Uni of Texas or Uni of Tennessee), Purdue, etc, etc.

Starting at 7:20am - 90 min practice Monday through Friday. Tuesday 2:20pm - 5pm flagline practice, Wednesday 2:20pm to 7pm practice with whole band. Friday game day. We sometimes had Saturday practice 10am-3pm leading up to a competition.

    I'm going to try and be objective even though I was in B Battery, Field Artillery Battalion, Fightin' Texas Aggie Band Class of '86. There are schools that have better musicians. A&M doesn't even have a music department (at least in my day). Student's are expected to know how to play when they show up. Some are better musicians than others. Then at A&M, they are taught to march and follow orders. A&M used to be all male, all military. That is no longer the case but you cannot be in the Aggie Band without joining the Corps. The Aggie Band is the best military style marching band...period. Not many schools do that any more. That does not mean that other schools cannot be very good at what they do; they just rarely do what we do. You can enjoy both. It's like appreciating a Bach Fugue and also appreciating Queen playing Bohemian Rhapsody. Both are good music but are not all that closely related. I happen to prefer the precision and perfection of Bach and the Aggies over Queen or whatever band is oozing across the field for other schools. Because I have been so successful in the war on anorexia, people have always tried to make me into a football player. I have to explain to them that football is just for those poor souls who cannot make it in the band.

    There are many different styles of marching band in America. Texas A&M is kind of old school but great in their own genre. You have already seen Ohio State University, I think, whose style used to be called "Big Ten." You might look for a few others. Grambling University. Texas Southern University. Penn State. University of Pittsburgh. Arizona State University. University of Oregon. Northern Illinois University. I kind of avoid the Stanford University marching band, but that alone makes them a sight to see. There are many, many more. Most of them have youtube channels so you can see what they are doing each week during football season. As a contrast, you might look for anything the Drum and Bugle Corp International (DCI) style as well. Cheers.

  • @darbysanders4117
    @darbysanders4117 Před 2 lety

    If you haven’t seen them perform the four way cross then you are missing out! You don’t have to make a reaction video but I definitely recommend looking it up. When they achieved it it was a whole big deal because according to computer simulations it wasn’t possible because two people had to be in the same place at the same time. The Aggies achieved it however, and now they perform it once a year

    • @richardgreen1383
      @richardgreen1383 Před rokem

      The FTAB uses a computer sequencing program for some formations (as do the vast majority of schools today), but - they cannot use one for the 4 way cross. Each program available states that it is impossible as two members have to occupy the same space. It has to be manually sequenced. While they can use the previous years sequence, but only if they don't have more band members on the field. If you watch a closeup of the crossing point, they do, they step between intersecting members. The band did not do it in my 4 (61-65) and I don't know then they started it.
      You can hear the reaction of the audience when the band splits into 4 sections, 3 columns in each section, for the fans know what is coming. I never get tired of watching the band. In a video I have of the opening ceremonies of the 2013 Cotton Bowl, the first time A&M played as a visitor (previous appearances were as the home team) they did the opening and when they played the Aggie War Hymn, it sounded as if the entire stadium was singing. Their opponent was Oklahoma which at that time was still in the Big 12 (that ends next year).

    Love to see y'all react. I was in marching band, in west Texas, when I was in High School. We had a large band. I don't have any of our shows from back then - but here's a link to the band from several years ago. It's the regional marching contest - so it's a little different than if it was during a football game. When I was in HS - a lot people would wait and watch both bands perform at half-time rather than leaving their seats.
    Here's the link - you'll need to fast forward about 5-6 min to get to where the show starts (if you want to watch it).
