Making an Animation for my 3D Pixel Art Game

- One of the benefits to making my pixel art game in a 3D game engine is the ability to very quickly build and iterate on animation assets. Among other things, it allows the player model and weapon models to be swapped very easily.
Animating convincingly in this style is a little different from typical 3D game animations, but with some guidance and experimentation I think I found some techniques that look promising.
I still have a lot to learn and improve on when it comes to character animation, but my current abilities should be enough to begin prototyping the gameplay ideas I have in mind.

"Relative Beginner" youre doing something unique and absolutely beautiful, keep at it!
well clearly he isn't a beginner, and has been doing this for... probably years. He's just saying it to downplay his skills (which many of us do) but it's kinda annoying to hear nonetheless.
I meant that I am a beginner in character animation, which I am (as I'm sure any experienced animator can tell). I try to make up for it with my extensive programming experience. Sorry for the confusion.
@@t3ssel8r Although I completely understand what you mean, you clearly know one thing or two things about animation principles. Fantastic work mate! Curb your impostor syndrome ;] Sorry for bad english, not my native language (irony intended).
@@happybunnywabbit Sounds like you're just projecting... How can you say someone's not a beginner if you're not in their shoes. It's like when people try to tell me I'm not a self-taught artist when they see my work and they don't know it took me 8 years of trial and error cause when I was self-teaching there were no good tutorials for learning how to draw certain things and paint. Nowadays people have great tutorials online to learn online worry-free so they think I just learned from watching channels and paying for online classes.
You DO know what relative means, right?
?????? this guy literally first time programming procedural stylized smearing like it's second nature... i'm so jealous, i aspire to be this determined to learn and accomplish goals and also be efficient like this, please don't stop doing these videos, it gives so much insight and also greatly inspires me
Dude, i'm not downplaying but you can learn so much in a week with youtube tutorials and basic internet skills. I 100% can see someone with only a weeks worth of learning and practicing at like 4 hours a day being able to do this.
*POINTS AT SCREEN*
Even you.
Envious, not jealous
@@ZigealFaust I think it depends upon the motivation too. Like I programmed my PixelArt renderer for Web in 3 days but I can't find motivation to complete the mobile design for my portfolio website. I want to do it, but the motivation is so low that it's stalling.
Spoiler alert: it's fake. This is all made up for CZcams. He likely spent thousands of hours on his craft and it has taken him years to get to this point. It's becoming more and more common for CZcams game developers to exaggerate their abilities in order to get more views.
@@ZigealFaust I'm into game design plus programming for 5 years now and still know almost nothing... tutorials didn't helped much with teaching/training my potato brain
The fact that the pixel art of the character and it's animations look hand drawn says a lot about the quality of your shader. I'm really excited about where this project is headed and something tells me you'll be at 100k subs in the near future. Just keep up the good work man. 👌👌👌
I can shock you it is not as "black magic" as you think it is.
Shading is mostly toon shader with some color clamping and alpha cleanup.
Trees are meshes converted into quads with textures using particle system and baked. Then UVs are moved to simulate wind.
Everything is animated then at specific step to make sure it have this "pixel art hand animated" feel.
Thats mostly it, it is far from "black magic".
@@kryperdev that's black magic to me mate i can barely make a hello world program
I honestly can't wait to play this, this is sick.
Amazing, as always. I'm so excited to watch your game come to life!
Always so cool to see the people making the tutorials I follow on other peoples tutorials

These are such a joy to watch! I'm definitely excited to see where this project is going to
These workflow/devlog videos are easily one of my favourite things on CZcams. Keep it up!
Your passion project is coming along beautifully. It's always cool to see the updates you post for it, so thanks for sharing.
Wow, you are a complete badass. Arts, engineering, math, all comes together so naturally in your videos. Great work!
Man, this is so awesome! I always get a huge urge to return to my game project when i see videos like yours, but at the moment i have no time for free stuff like that unfortunately. Thanks a lot for sharing, i love low resolution and stilized visuals tremendously and you did a great job with the animation, too!
I'd play this just for the art, this is so sick, underrated channep
This is, without a doubt, the most unique game dev I've seen. Incredible job!
This looks INCREDIBLE. Such a good idea. High hopes for your game!
Your work is amazing, thanks for bringing a comprehensive tutorial and for introducing me to Cascadeur!
this looks amazing, i really love the design of the character and everything, super inspiring
Underrated as heck. Can't wait to see what else you have in store!
Amazing!!! Waiting for your future lessons and courses !
It looks SO COOL! I rarely play video games and I probably won’t play this, but the devlogs are absolute gold content. Please make more!
it is amazing to see how much we progress with graphics each passing day. Just baffling how beautiful it all comes together, great work bud!
my goodness I looked at your character and jesus! how beautiful this pixelart style together with 3d
Very exciting as always. Good luck with all your future efforts!!
Wow! That looks so awesome. Great job!
really captivating take on the pixel art style, looking to watching the development of your game!
these videos are incredible well made and entertaining, you really deserve more recognition for them. incredibly great job
This is gorgeous and incredible man, keep it up, very excited to see what comes next
Keep it up, man! Your devlogs are always super inspiring. Look forward to seeing more 👍
Amazing work, I like how the right leg stomps as the player swings, nice touch :)
man this looks absolutely amazing its really coming together
I've been playing video games for almost 30 years, and I can count on one hand the number of upcoming games that I've been content to just LOOK at. You've got lightning in a bottle. I'm certain that your success is just a matter of time.
love these process videos, looks great, keep it up!
Thanks a lot for the tips & good luck with the further development of the game :)
I really love your art style !
you just gonna throw in that perfect transition at @7:05 like that and not mention it OKAY FRIEND I SEE YOU
This makes me want to create a game myself! You make it look so easy and amazing (which it really isnt). I cant wait to see more from you :)
i literally clapped at the end. the end product turned out amazingly cool! inspired me to give it a try :D thank u !
OMG! for years, YEARS! I have been trying to remember the name of the game Hyper light drifters, I played it when I was in middle school but couldn't remember the name. That intro clip was what I needed! Thank you so much :D
You're killing it man!!! keep up the good work
This looks SO COOL! When this game comes out, I'm buying it straight away. I love pixel art and I always thought that 3D pixel art doesn't look that good, but DAMN! This is perfect. (Speaking about all of your videos)
lmfao
this artstyle is amazing man! i like the production value of your videos, keep it up
I’ve also been looking into 3d pixel art as I wanted pixel art aesthetics, but faster 3d workflow. Nice trick you did to simulate older style animations.
I feel like you have been asked this a lot but, I really like the pixelated look you get in your previous videos and this one. I don't really fully understand many of the descriptions of your past video and although creating that pixelated feel in 3d is simple, you do it in such an awesome way and it looks so nice (the trees and the grass especially). If you wouldn't mind making a tutorial, I think many of us would be grateful.
+1 :)
I believe he said after this project is done he will sell the shader at unity marketplace. Thus I don't think he will just give it up for free.
@@happybunnywabbit He well deserves the money!

That's some really cool animations, I have to say. Wish you all the best!
Your game is really cool, 3d pixel art is definetly one of the best type of art ive seen. And your ai also looks dope. Hope to see more devlogs
Man you've just became my inspiration making game style like this, im a growing tech artist who specialise in rigging , animation now im beginning to learn unity coding as well cuz of your work
This is amazing!! it is so valuable to me as an aspiring developer to see your process. thank you for sharing :)
You're doing some really remarkable work, and I wish I could like this video more than once.
7:04 The transition from animation software to game was very smooth.
cant wait for the next devlog, this looks so good
I always wanted to make a 3D pixel art game, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to do it, so seeing the idea in such good hands is very relieving :D
Dang that's so cool, cascadeur seems awesome, I love the onion skin feature. And the smear shader is amazing
Man this awesome in so many levels, keep it up!
I love how this looks
Amazing job!!!
Can't wait for your game to come out. Jump on the train fellow game dev. Subbed
Wow absolutely flawless aesthetic as usual
thanks for the content you bring, I really like these themes, indies, pixelart and animation
this looks really cool!
i like how you talk about work process, very inspiring :)
hey wow this is really cool. this is giving me really good ideas for my own projects. i've never heard of the animation software you're using, and you make everything seem so intuitive.
I love this art style and your animations. this is so inspiring, one day i might have enough practice and experience to do this well.
Your videos are goddamn amazing man, you're a renaissance man of game dev - doing art direction, game design, animation, programming, vfx, video editing, and education all at once. Bravo!!
Great video mate. Nice to see another doing a 3D pixle art like game. Smears are looking good
absolutely beautiful work🔥
I know this video is older, but I just wanted to say how amazing it looks! It looks so crispy but smooth at the same time. Great work!
how does animation look crispy
this is way too advanced for me to take notes right now. yet I watched the full video. great work
Sheessh this a banger man, honestly can't wait to play this
yoooo that looks so cool!! i love it!!
I love your channel, so mutch to learn! Thank you for sharing!
this is amazing, what I'd give for a hack and slash with this attention to detail (maybe even procedurally generated rooms and a massive weapon selection!)
The 3D Animation's giving motivating vibe. It's so good
For the quality of stuff you produce, underrated!! Amazing stuff. I'm also considering starting gamedev i dono
This is so epic , looks so slick/ sick !
Bro this is awesom!!
literally cant wait for when you finish this game keep it up big man
=D
This is beautiful work!
Wow I am thoroughly impressed by your animation knowledge even though you're a beginner. Great job with this so far and good luck moving forward!
Holy moly, i just discovered this channel. This is incredible
You're video inspired me to come up with such a good idea that I think I have to pursue some game development so I can see it become a reality
Nice one ! This looks sick !!
Thank you so much, you beautiful human being. I am so grateful.
It's great t3ssel8r, great job 😍
Thanks, This really helped me for Animating a fight scene.
Muchas gracias por mostrar tu proceso y explicarlo.
Te quedo increíble el movimiento. :D
IT WORKED, THANKS I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOREVER, BUT NO TUTORIAL COULD EXPLAIN IT AS YOU DID
you are literally amazing it blows my mind!
So cool, just found this channel and I love this!!
Thats awelsome bru! Keep doing this game pls S2
dang, this is sick! great work! seems like the youtube algo has reached you too.
inspiring videos, and love the art style makes me nostalgic for Prince of Persia (1989) but light years better looking forward to following your development
Thank you for explaining this thoroughly!
That's absolutely amazing!
Your project looks gorgeous
Very clean, love ur videos!
Two things I learned from this:
- Cascadeur is awesome. I never heard of the program before this video, and the AI-assisted keyframing sounds very interesting. I'll definitely give it a try.
- At 6:18, it's ok (and in cases like these encouraged) to keyframe raw joints alongside bones we designate for handling/assistance/master controls. I was always under the impression that I'm making my keyframes too data-heavy by doing this; that I'm doing something wrong with the way I set up my handles as I must rely solely on their keyframes to animate the object. Thank you for clearing that misconception I've had.
This is very good thank you for sharing!
I'm really looking forward to it
literally makiing my dream game. I really like the 3D pixel art look
Love the art style!
For anyone who couldn't tell, the 3D animation software he is using is spelled "Cascadeur". All too often these pro teachers take for granted how hard it can be for someone who just doesn't know the name, or the right button to click.
Thanks
Thanks! but what was the second app used?
unity
@@t3ssel8r Thank you so much!!!!
Gracias estaba buscando de l nombre del programa
love the art style!
Nice to see that somebody had stumbled upon the idea of using 3d to simulate pixel art as well.
Dude this game looks gorgeous! I’d love to see a video about development of the game in general and what the end goal is if you haven’t done one already!
