  • Every Irish person has an average of 14,000 cousins, according to genealogy experts...and you should try contacting some of them!
The study traced back Irish family trees for up to 200 years, and found that each one of us shares thousands of relatives based on the number of genetic eighth or closer cousins we have from one common ancestor.
More than 5,300 Irish people had their DNA examined as part of the study.
Ireland has a long history of emigration, which grew rapidly in the years after the famine, and that has seen the number of distant relatives we share run into the thousands.
One famous comedy duo are living proof of the 14,000 cousins theory. TV presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were both brought up in the North East of England and had no idea that they had Irish ancestry until they took part in the ITV programme, Ant and Dec’s DNA journey.
They soon discovered that they both had relatives from Ireland and all over the world including America.
But the real showstopper surprise came when the DNA tests showed that not only did they have Irish heritage, they had a much closer connection than they ever imagined.
Which just goes to show, when it comes to DNA and ancestry, it really is a small world, especially if you’re Irish.

So, Ant and Dec had no idea they had Irish ancestry? And Dec didn't even cotton on even though his mum and dad ran Newcastle's Irish Centre and his Irish relatives visited his family?

DNA companies give out wildly exaggerated claims on specifics while hiding disclaimers in small print. They are funded by people who want to sell genetic information, patent your DNA, and insurance companies. There are huge technical and theoretical flaws in their processes and claims. In short, it's mostly bunk.

My nephew used two different companies and got two different results. Enough said. One claimed Bulgarian heritage and there is nothing in the family heritage to back that up at all.

I have from my father, 17 first cousins from his 5 siblings and from my mother I have 13 first cousins from 5 out of her 7 siblings. My family was considered average. The family is close until the grandparents pass away. Usually by that time, your own parents are now grandparents. Some of my cousins are grandparents themselves now.

I have been researching my family history for many years. I have yet to find anyone living in Ireland that I am related to. My paternal line is Irish and English. I have my Irish ancestors traced to 1800. Carr is the surname. I hope against hope that one day, I will have an Irish cousin living in Ireland!

I’m 50 years of age and have 51 first cousins in Ireland, England and Canada. My own child has only 10 first cousins all in Ireland. That’s some jump in numbers in one generation. Thanks to the pull away from the Catholic Church.
