When Bongi walks into the changing room and starts crying - not hiding it, just balling - I developed a whole new love for the Springboks. And to then see Rassie and him hug each other, just finished me. It's a picture of what SA can be and the role rugby can play. It's men from different backgrounds coming together, not just to work, but being vulnerable and actually loving each other. It's healthy masculinity. It's beautiful and something I hope people beyond the rugby world get to see.

This is not new, this is and has always been rugby. What the rugby world needs is genuine respectful speakers and hosts like Jim, Egg Chaser, Two Cents Rugby, Wildkard and less toxic old has beens and media jurnos with agendas and gripes.
I also loved it in the change room when Pieter Steph looks around, then has a few choice words to say to the team.
The words Rassie spoke when he gave him that hug "Jy is ń wonderlike seun" wich translates in English to: You are are wonderful son.Thats the true camaraderie and love for one another in our brilliant Bok camp. So proud to be a South African when i see this.🤙🇿🇦😎

If you watch the end closely you will see Bongi put out his hand for a hand shake and Rassie just pulls him in for a hug. A very special moment I feel privileged to have seen.
100% Agree. Bongi's dress room break down, was a manifestation what every man goes through that has done something really hard with the weight of your fam or village or country on your shoulders and winning. It is most humbling and extraordinay feeling and all men could relate to that last clip. It was amazing. I loved it! Definitely my fav moment of the whole series when him and Rassie hug. Love this series
Every South African politician should watch Chasing the Sun 2 and each of them in turn should stand up and tell us what they are going to do for South Africa.

Rassie and Bongi at the end was so special for me. It's so much more than father and son as you say. This is a real life example of a black man and a white man being men together. Being real. Stronger together as was our mantra. A real life symbol of what we can do together. Huge. Our politics is so divisive, but this is real proof that in the cutting edge of life and word class achievement that we can do so much more united. Love it.
What i loved most, was that England took the boks 2019 game plan, and the boks winning that match proves that the boks had evolved further since the previous world cup.
Polly is a straight up legend... How many people, nevermind sportsman wouldn't buckle under that pressure. He just takes it in his stride and produces flawlessness.
As Saffers we are more accustomed to derision and scorn when it comes to analysis of the Springboks. What's the name of that NZ show endlessly spouting drivel lead by some Sir Whosit? Thank you Jim for that intelligent, articulate, heartfelt and genuine reflection on a superb documentary of an exceptional moment in sporting history. The Springbok story is much more than just the game we love to watch.

Hi Jim, did you know the title of the series is actually a response to a speech by Mandela where he says he dreams of a day that ALL the children of South africa can play together under the sun. Gives the series even more emotion and nation building.
Ep 4 gave me a lot of respect for Bongi. To see what the Boks and his role as captian meant to him is amazing. He understands and appreciates the responsibility placed on his shoulders and is willing to die for his country in the Boks jersey. Mapimpi's story will forever be the most touching of all, but Bongi has all of my love and support after seeing Ep 4. We were all crying after we beat Eng in that semi.

The only aspect of south Africa that's living the dream of Nelson Mandela is the springbok team...we have alot going on in this country but that team just set the dream of unity and brother hood ..😊
Jim.what I love about you is your integrity. You don't mince words, and you give credit where it's due. There is a part of the back story that, if you are not South African, will go over your head. Rugby was an apartheid symbol. It was the sport of Afrikaaner nationalism. As such, black South Africa rejected it except for a part of the Eastern Cape, the rest of black South Africa focused on football. Nelson Mandela, backing our first World Cup winning team, started the shift. The Bongi story is about how Rugby heros started to reach deep rural black South Africans. Rugby has gone from a divisive sport to an inclusive sport. Rugby heros are now South Afrcan heroes. That's also why the genuine brotherhood message is so powerful at home. These men are not faking the relationships for the media. This is real unity and when we are united we are unstoppable.

Well said. The transformation of the game in SA doesn't have to do with quotas and numbers. It has to do with how the game transformed from a perceived symbol of Afrikaner exclusiveness and division to a symbol of unity, strength and brotherhood. It's such a great organic storyline that should be the perfect metaphor for what can be achieved in other parts of our society too.
Some of your story is true some of it you missed research,black south Africa was playing rugby in the 80s while Mandela was in jail I have seen photos of black players back then,before bongi we used to have chester Williams apartheid saw black south Africa getting good at rugby n decided to cut them off,and world rugby decided to suspended south Africa from participating in all of rugby against other nstions

@@Burninglash just research Errol Tobias and his book,there were other provinces playing rugby they were not recognized so blacks didn't reject it,apartheid make it sure it must not be televised but there are pictures/photos to show
Rugby is the greatest game ever played by humans. The scrum is the most primary defining feature of rugby. The Springbok scrum in 2023 is the most powerful in the history of the game.

Best episode yet of Chasing the Sun. RG the Viking. Kurt Lee thinking all was over but the team saying “we got you”. Ox Nche telling us his methodical approach to the scrum 🤣. Vincent Koch aka Mr incredible winning a penalty with an injured knee. At the end you see what a player and person Bongi is. The week after the English media are hammering him for the whole Kant saga 🤦🏻♂️. It’s for South Africa 🇿🇦🔥.
Poor KLA thinking he'd dropped the whole tournament by knocking that critical ball on. And then Kwagga walking over and saying "don't worry, we've got this". What a great moment.

There is so much going wrong in SA due to politicians. Lack of jobs, lack of education, lack of law and order, lack of electricity and now a water crisis. Yet here is a group of South African men that give hope to a country. Every ordinary South African knows if they work together the country would be one of the richest on the planet but the politicians benefit from sowing racism and division. That’s why people cry when they watch this.
Handre Pollard would be brilliant in a remake of the Man with no name spaghetti westerns, he has ice water in his veins 😊
Ive been rewatching all your podcasts leading up to the world cup as well as during the world cup again, now with having the insight that we get from this beautiful documentary. Its incredibly fascinating to see how much more work goes into winning the world cup than just playing rugby. That's what's missing...strong fathers in the home. Boys are growing up not knowing how to handle the pressure of being a man and girls have no direction on what to expect of themselves to be decent women. Everybody lacking values and behaving in outrageous ways to make money.🤞🇿🇦

From the FRA game with so much ecstacy to ENG game with 70 min agony left the supporters with only relieve at the end and we can sympathize with Bongi
The Bongi moment is similar for me as Chasing the Sun 1 when Rassie spoke about Makazoli Mapiempie. You never knew these things about these blokes, now Bongi...you know him as a hardman for SA, often critisized cos he is compared to Malcolm Marx...but boy, what a legend he turns out to be.
Pollard's pre match press conference comments told me he was ready for the moment

That weight that Bongi carried, is why rugby is so big in South Africa. It's not just a sport to us. It is the one and probably only thing that ties the country together. So Bongi showed what any straight thinking south african felt
There was one moment of bravery in the game against England which no-one refers to, and it has to do with the try which Ragnar, the viking son of Snyman scored at the end. The warrior concerned is Deon Fourie. Time was rapidly running out. The ball was cleanly won in the lineout on the England line, the ideal opportunity for the pack to get over the line. But, no, Fourie takes it upon himself to go for it and cross the chalk. When he did not succeed, I thought to myself: That's it. Luckily the viking was in the vicinity. So many things could have gone wrong in that move - he could have lost the ball, or the viking could have lost the ball or not manage to dot in down (it was touch and go). He would surely have to then carry some blame for not allowing the much safer option of a collective effort by the pack to take its course. Whether it was a planned move, or whether the England pack prevented a pushover try is not discussed in Chasing the Sun. I would love to listen to some opinions on this.
Or perhaps he hoped that he drops the ball so that the Springboks van get the scrum!

It was terrifying just watching the scrum coaching sessions. Truly the two best scrums in The world was in the same squad at the WC.
I got dizzy scrumming with the boys and this was not even in The match.
