I met this guy in my very first competition... He came in as a guest poser. Didn't even look real. Dwarfed everyone. Craziest thing, I liked him immediately. Reminded me of Arnold. Seriously nicest pro bodybuilder I've ever met. May he live a long happy life. 🙏

I found it awesome, how the crowd reacted when they heard that Günter was 5th. It was just so spontaneous and heartfelt. He looked really great.

I met him at an amateur show in 2003. Very nice guy. Even told me "Maybe I'll see you on stage some day." Obviously that never happened. But it sure made 20 year old me smile ear to ear.

This guy was perfectly engineered in a German lab. He had the looks of a Hollywood hero, the mass of a Mr. Olympia, the perfect aesthetics and still was a gentle humble giant. That was a real rip off worst than the Bret Hart Montreal screwjob.

As someone who just started watching bodybuilding videos I really appreciate your videos about the "lesser known" athletes that never quite got the title of Mr. Olympia. Some of these guys look more impressive to me in these videos than Ronny Coleman (like Günter Schlierkamp and Markus Rühl), but then again I have no idea how judging works in this sport.

It's a pretty universal consensus that Ronnie was gifted the 02 Olympia. Jay Cutler wasn't in it and politics still played a huge roll in those days. Gunther uncrowned Mr. Olympia. Same as Victor Martinez. Look up his 07 Olympia physique. Incredible
Gunter and Arnold are my references in the sport, not only for their perfect physique but for their body language and charisma.
Wow, Gunter made Ronnie and the rest of them look SMALL! The dude even had more striations (he was super shredded, especially for his size)... look carefully at his legs and glutes from the side pose... he totally got robbed. That is so sad.

It was obviously a political rather than a competitive decision. As Günter said, he won the public award, which counts most.
Wow, he seems like the nicest guy ever. Class act all the way. That moment when he didnt win will be remembered more than any placing.
There's just something very appealing about Gunther's physique. Plus he just seems like a real good dude. One of my all time favs for sure.

we know that many bodybuilder deserve to win olympia but the thing to win olympia is consistency and improving themself better and better till your opponents look like trash because if you had setback there is always someone who will look after and will going to defeat you if you doesnt improve yourself.
people like jay cutler, dexter jackson, shawn rhoden are clear example of consistency where
people like flex wheeler, Nasser el sonbatty, Gunter, markus rule, victor martinez, kai greene are true example of dominant improvement but uncrowned due to politics.

Gunter Schlierkamp the most humble bodybuilder and true champion of bodybuilding sport as well as life by accepting the worst life can throw at him with smile and by doing that winning the very contest which tried to make him look looser and robbed him from the titel of Mr. Olympia. Hats off to champion with golden era physic in todays bubble gut era. 👍

Just learned about this guy now it just shows how many amazing people there are out there and we never get a chance to meet them thanks to CZcams and other sources we can learn about these legends. Props to this man a new inspiration for me. It's sad that we only know about the usual stars from Hollywood. I believe there are better people out there than some of the stars Hollywood hired lol
I never understood how body building was judged but I always thought Gunter was the most aesthetic and his symmetry was great. To me he looks like a clear winner next to Ronnie.
His height, proportion and mass mounted in the most aesthetic body ever walked a BB stage.
Although he never was a real freak, he had no limitations in comparison to them.
Compared to the freakish guys of this era, his body and charisma was different, but superior in whole.
He looked absolutely aeonic in 2002.

Every time I met Gunter, he was the nicest, kindest dude. Always talked to me as long as I wanted, and was so genuine. He is the best ambassador I can think of in bbing. Quincy Taylor was also supremely humble.
