  • Over the last few decades, the world and everything in it has changed enormously. Hairstyles change. Fashions change. Even cartoon characters evolve over time. But there’s still one major area of our lives where so many people are stuck in the past. And it’s something that billions of people are doing every day.
In her fun and engaging style, Shirley talks about this one major area by taking a look at communication styles over different eras, and how so much has changed, yet so much has not changed.
International bestselling author of many email and business writing books, Shirley shares some insights and humorous stories that audiences all over the world will be able to relate to. While encouraging audience members to embrace change, Shirley advocates the importance of the human touch, encouraging everyone to “prove you are human” when writing emails. Shirley has always been curious about the way people communicate. So when the opportunity came after she studied at teacher-training college, she surprised herself by accepting a job at the other side of the world, in Singapore.
Quickly discovering the challenges of communicating across cultures, Shirley then began her journey of helping others to communicate more effectively, especially in the workplace. Her passion eventually led her to start writing as she wrote for international publisher, Pearson. Since then, Shirley has established herself as a leading authority in modern business writing and communication. She is the author of many successful books, including an international bestseller that has sold over half a million copies worldwide and has been translated into 17 languages. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
