    Also, totally feel your vibe on the "that's my power". Most people won't understand being 100% reliant on solar power with battery backup, I'm glad they showed up. This tip might be too late for you, but for others, make sure your Toy Hauler is pointing East and West, take your panels down and reconnect them on the South side to get power while work on the roof - just make sure to protect the panels from anything that could fall from the roof.

    During summer daylight, some folks park in the shade.
    The rig interior stays cooler that way.
    .
    [edited to add]
    Some folks park in the shade, then run remote photovoltaic panels in the summer sun.

      Yeah, I’ve seen that. We usually are in the mountains above tree line, so no shade available. Plus, with our power demands it would be hard to move that many panels around. Also, portable panels are a pain to deal with on windy days…which we’ve gotten a lot of in our travels.

      Thanks, Joe. It has really improved our quality of life in the trailer. I’m excited to see where it lets us go in the future.

    I’m currently sitting at 6.5kWatts on Taj-Ma-Haul, I have one more array to intake to get to the 7kWatt target)
    String 1-8x540w (4p2s)
    String 2-5x445w (5s)
    String 2 will be a 6x445 3p2s)
    I also plan to install a ground array at my home base for another 8.6kWatts .
    You can never have too much solar!

    Great video, id like to do a 24v system on an enclosed trailer with 4x 320w panels and hope to be able to power a Dometic ibis 4 AC when the sun's shining. Your solar rack is is fantastic

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před 6 měsíci

      Nice. I’m not familiar with that AC. Is it one of the newer 12V units from them? If so, I think they are becoming quite popular in van builds.

    After we designed our photovoltaic array for our ExpeditionVehicle, we took our specifications to MAC'S BATTERIES AND SOLAR in Eugene, Oregon.
    .
    We have a 24v system.
    MAC'S built our bank in a couple-three days.
    We are equivalent to sixteen (16) BattleBorn 100ah...
    ... for us$2,500 instead of sixteen grand.

    Sorry if this has been covered by another video but you need to replace that red turn cut off switch. Check the voltage rating on it. They are usually only rated for up to 48 volts. It could be an Instant fire if it is opened with a load on it. Try one of the higher voltage d/c breakers as a shut off. Great video.

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thanks. I actually did a lot of research surrounding that cut off switch on a lot of solar forums. Yes, when you buy them they say they are rated to 48 volts, but in reality they are rated much higher. 72 volts seemed to be the consensus. The reason the manufacturer doesn’t state that is there is additional regulation for it if they state the rating over 48 volts. It’s been in use now on our system for 7 months. No issues.

    I like how you think on the design of the solar roof
    What was the weight of the custom solar roof rack w/o the solar panels?
    Was it expensive for them to build the custom roof rack?
    Did the roof rack affect your mpg when being towed?

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před 15 dny

      Not sure about the weight, but it wasn’t much because it was aluminum. Using aluminum came at a cost though of about $2,500 in material. Didn’t really change our MPG much. We went from averaging 10-11 MPG to closer to 10.

    Does each panel 'float' independent of its neighbor?
    I think bolting their sides together -- the whole shootin' match as one rigid unit -- decreases flexibility and increases the potential for cracking.

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před 2 měsíci

      They aren’t bolted panel to panel. There is a welded aluminum L-bracket that runs the entire length on each side and they are bolted with stainless steel hardware to that.

    re : leaks
    We thought our ExpeditionVehicle roof was leaking.
    We taped, sealed, gooped, re-sealed...
    ... and still, the torrents continued.
    .
    After a couple weeks of everything inside drenched, we opened the windows to release some humidity.
    [cue : 'ah ha!' moment]
    Instead of leaks, the interior downpour was from trapped humidity condescending coagulating on cool flat surfaces.
    .
    These days, for over two decades full-time live-aboard, we always open two windows on opposite walls.
    Escaping warm air carries humidity and odors.

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před 2 měsíci

      Our mini split does dehumidify, so we’ve never had condensation build up except for a little bit of moisture on the windows some mornings which clears off the second I get up and turn on our exhaust fan.

    Well I do got to say one thing buddy that thing really really looks good I mean very nice job on it I'm really impressed I really like it can I ask you a question what kind of trailer is that and what size is it like the length with the tallness I like to get me a trailer like that cuz it has the barn doors on the back of it at least I think it does so if you could help me out there please I really appreciate you thank you and it really looks good That's really nice bro thank you very much

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před rokem

      Hi, Joe! Thanks for the compliment 🙏 It is a 7x18ft with 7 ft interior height. With the panel rack and solar panels it comes to 10’3” total height. This includes the 19” of ground clearance it has. It is a Colorado Trailer (dealer of this model). The rear is actually a ramp door with stabilizer jacks so it can be used as a deck. But you can probably ask them for barn doors if you want. Just curious as to why you prefer barn over the ramp?

    With a 48v system, how do you power your refrigerator? Thank you.
    PS - You had 1400 watts, not watt-hours.

    • @TinyHouseVentures
      @TinyHouseVentures  Před rokem +1

      Our Growatt inverter/charge controller inverts the 48V DC system to AC power. We could run the fridge on 12V (it can do both) in which case I have a 48 to 12V converter wired in for our 12V fans and lights.
      And yes, I meant watts, not watt-hours. Thanks for the correction.

    How about 'narration over B-roll' instead of a stationary camera on a stationary spokes-model.
    Show instead of tell?
