The one I resonate the most is ignore timing! I've learned how important it is and know we can be one. Once you get the click (got that one? ;) ) your metronome is your second best friend (first is the kit ofcourse). Awesome video's love them! Thank you!!
Messing up my folkrum
Also not wearing shoes and hitting the top of my foot with the head of the base drum pedal THAT STUFF HURTS
Hi Gabe, I have a question. I’ve been playing drums for now 2 years and a half and I want to buy a new practice pad with a support under it. What would you suggest to me? Thanks in advance! Keep it up I love what you do!❤️
I grip my sticks too loose, and they become aircraft
I have overcome all of these mistake but I do recognize them ;) & tip 9 was actually 'new' to me, I'll work on my hand, leg coordination, thanks
I made every single one of these mistakes except quitting. I still feel like a beginner, but the progress i have made because of DBO academy makes me feel like I have the potential to be a great drummer
Heck yes Devin! You are crushing it. The progress you've made in a short amount of time is amazing!
@@DrumBeatsOnline thanks Gabe, couldn't have done it without you brother
Trying to get into DBO. But it’s still locked to new students. what are the pricing options? M looking at Drumeo and a couple other sites also. My drums comes in a couple days so I want to start ASAP. Thanks.
@@minisurfbanana Hey there! Doors open to new students in a few weeks. Stay tuned for details!
Keep at it brother .... I am betting you are a lot better than you think you are ...
Rock out man from Australia..👍
A beginner stage is definitely the most important stage in the drummer's journey, as it really makes or breaks your desire to keep going! Awesome work!
I totally hear you there!
@@DrumBeatsOnline Ahh thank ye man!
So true ... must have the desire and a lot of patience
What makes me wanna quit is seeing other drummers playing complicated so easily but I’m not quitting no time soon
I really appreciate the succinctness of these tips, it really shows his professionalism and planning, instead of just winging it. 10 mistakes in under 10 minutes! I felt enlightened not exasperated after watching this.
That means a lot! Thanks for the kind words Bob!
I’m not a beginner but I still like to watch videos like this to make sure I’m not over confident and missing something. Interestingly enough the beat that you challenged us with was a huge breakthrough for me in my drumming. It’s the first beat that taught me to separate my foot from always having to hit with my right hand. Took me awhile to get but I remember my drumming really opening up after that.
Drumming has honestly changed my life. Ive been playing for 2 years and it's amazing how I've changed. Before I started I felt stressed like crazy. Now drums is my #1 stress reliever!
I couldn't agree with you more!
I’m so glad you have noticed this benefit. You know how sometimes people will fidget around with their hands/fingers when they get stressed out? Well that’s the beauty of drumming. We have a more extreme version of fidgeting that allows us to release more tension :)
Keep playing my bother! You are absolutely correct on the stress relief!
One of the first things I did when I started playing drum, was playing with my musical friends. They roasted the shit out of me and pointed out every flaw in my playing. But in the long run it helped me develop as musician.
Tbh those musical friends sound like assholes lmao, but so am i so...
I totally get you man... That roasting was annoying as hell but it really helped me play better. In fact, I play better when they roast me instead of praising.
Its always a good dat when Gabe posts
❤️
Nice! I've been playing drums for 53 years and this young man knows what he is talking about. I am now a better drummer than I was even a year ago- it takes practice and patience. I have played thousands of gigs, but you never stop the pursuit of getting better. Recently, I have attempted to learn the Zep tune "Ramble On." Phew, this thing is tough, but I estimate I'm about two weeks from nailing it. I can't wait to premier for my jamming buddies! Don't quit!!!!!
Yeah great words brother ...
I been on the stool for around 20 yrs and couldn't agree with you more ...
Stay safe mate from the Land Down Under 👍
Update: I got it ! Frustrating, but now I can "Ramble on!" Never quit!!! Up next: "Rosanna"- all of it!
4:55 OOOOH That was painful the first time I did that...
recording yourself?
I’ve been playing for about 25 years and you’re one of the best teachers dude. Mike Johnston was my GOAT back in 2007 but I’m so thankful that so many other amazing drummers put out content like this. Thank you so much and blessings to you bro!
Consistently great advice Gabe. Even as a touring drummer myself, it's always good to take a step back and make sure the foundation is there. Keep it up 🤘
Thanks so much for the kind words Nick! So glad you find value in these videos!
I agree 💯 w/ playing as much as you can w/ as many different musicians as possible, even if your musical preferences differ. Also something that really helped me coming up, was I first played a 3piece meaning bass, snare, & a hit. Used the hat opened as my crash, until I could afford to buy a crash, & so on & so on, piece by piece, & it helped so much because it made me appreciate each addition to my arsenal of weapons, that was slowly built, piece by piece giving me that much more time to understand how it worked alone & also how it worked when added to all of the other piece's. Understanding the mechanics, especially individually, have given me that much more apprication, allowing me to realize it's truly priceless.🥁🥁🥁
5:30 had me dead hahahaha, don't forget to always suggest ear protection!
Man, countless times I have given up and thought “Damn, I’ll never be like Dave Grohl, or John Bonham.” But I’ve learned you have to work your way up. It takes years to get to their level.
Absolutely!
Hey Brother stick it out ... Bonham was a once in a lifetime drummer... that is why people still talk about him in such high regard...
You will smash it man have fun and Rock Out ...
Ticonderous1 hey, thanks. I appreciate your support!
Playing the drums is indeed a journey... And I love it, 9 years of playing and rocking out...
A weird way of how I started, I would watch so many drum covers (as I already played guitar) and I always would visualize playing drums, and I happen to see tips everywhere from all the drummer channels like this one or Wyatt Stav, and I would do a nerdy air drum type thing, then maybe a year later, I got a drum set and I really feel like I moved through the beginner stage way faster due to all those things. Uhhh and thank you for reading my story
I love the drums and I tap on everything wherever I go. Practicing random rhythms all the time makes it easier when you get to the drumset
This isnt an uncommon thing. Pretty similar to how I got into it lol.
Nicely done video, love that other room (also)!
I started out in life playing snare in my middle school band…gave it all up when I picked up a guitar in high school, 35 years later (still a guitarist) I just bought my first kit. So the learning curve begins again, but soooo looking forward to being able to lay down my own grooves.
Fantastic and really practicle advice. Going to watch this video every other week or so as a reminder of these things and what I need to really be focusing on. Thanks Gabe!
Thank you Gabe; great stuff. I found myself in several of these mistake areas! Always working to improve
I remember my second day playing (been playing for 1 year) i woke up the next morning after practicing for about 30 minutes the night before, i said to myself “i hate this this isn’t fun, why am i doing this?” i decided to ignore my feelings and push through it, and that was the best decision i made. it’s been quite a journey and i can surely say drumming has a special place in my heart forever now, I’m glad i never give up.
Agreed, practice for me is a lot like exercise. I don't like that either but I do it daily because if I don't, the only one I'm hurting is myself.
I just ordered a Gretsch 4 piece, waiting for the delivery any day now, I’m soaking in all the info brother
Thanks for the tips, very well presented.
Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Thank you.. I needed this 🥲🥲
Your channel is honestly amazing. I use a lot of your beats and it is like a legendary addition to my drumming.
Thanks for the amazing content!
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy!
Thanks so much for the very kind words!!
Really enjoyed the information and exercises you presented here. I noted down the patterns for reference and practise. Those off beat kicks sure are tricky for beginner!
I've been drumming very actively for over 10 years, and still watched the whole video. It's really well done, and it's always good to make sure I haven't missed something on my drumming journey.
Thank you for the video!
Wow the WHOLE 9 minute 10 second video
What concentration......
christine filas I... I'm not very sure you understood my point, buddy.
Thank you. Lately i forgot to have fun while practice because im trying hard to improve my skills. Truly thank you.
Thank you😊
This really helped my guitar playing
Thank you so much Gabe, Your videos helped me when I was a beginner, but right now I'm the one who is helping beginners... ;)
Golden advise, Sir!!
Another awesome vid my dude!🤘
You're on point Gabe, No 1 mistake said it all about me when it comes to drumming!!.
Thanks Timothy!
Ha ha, when I began drumming (at 14) I really focused more on how my kit looked than was it comfortable to play. Do to a job opportunity I quite playing at around 35 and didnt touch a kit for for years. Just before my 55th birthday members from the last band I played in invited me to 30th anniversary where they rent out a local bar and current and past band members all show up and play and it is open to the public. After just one set I noticed my now 54 year old body was taking a beating and the drums felt awkwardly laid out. But I had so much fun that night I went out and bought a new kit and started playing again. I was amazed that paying more attention to set up and adjusting everything to fit ME allowed me to play longer and with less pain.
Loved the video Gabe and I remember my beginning phase and to be honest i felt quitting in the first 6 months of learning but now it's been 5 years since I have started loved it❤️❤️
That's amazing! Good for you for continuing to push forward!
I just started drumming three Weeks ago and I'm actually more a guitarist but I wanted to try something different. So I bought a e drum kit as otherwise my neighbours are going to burn my house and keep going.
Now meanwhile i can play some of Gabe's 20 must know beats and today I sat 4 hours behind my kit with toxicity from SOAD (I know it sounds ridiculous to start with this song after three weeks, but I love this song). Now my ass and arms are burning but I know it is worth it....
Your videos are a great help for me and inspire me to move on and gives some good tips for practicing...
Whatever, thanks a lot for your work and videos.
Cheers!
That’s amazing! Good for you for starting the journey! I’m so happy I can help in any way!
I’m the the same...bought sticks and a pad two weeks ago Trying to get into DBO. But it’s still locked to new students. what are the pricing options? M looking at Drumeo and a couple other sites also. My TD27 vdrums comes in a couple days so I want to start ASAP. Thanks.
One of the first songs I taught myself to play when I started was psychosocial by slipknot. I was 13/14 and never got it completely perfect. But it lit my fire for drumming.
I also may have been that beginner that focused on speed too much. After coming back from a 7 year break I'm learning all this over again.
Moral of the story, play what you want. Just make sure you make the good habits and the rest will come.

(This is so that I can remember where the exercise was, so don't pay attention)
write it down
Tnx for the motivation!! Grt work 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
all the points were valid and welll summarized...thanks for this video!
So glad you liked it!
Thank you Gabe
For everything you do
Good stuff. Great video.
Thanks bro Gabe.....I have a family member that this video will help him alot. As always thanks for you're video
Excellent drum channel and awesome content!!!!!
Nice advice always sir
Dope video man just what we needed to hear 🤘🏽
❤️❤️
My biggest mistake was not working on the fundamentals. I immediately started with my youth church band and it helped me jail well with other musicians, but it caused some crutches and got me stagnant. I know you’re a busy guy(Gabe) but it would totally be awesome if you made a cymbal pack with meinl. All of your cymbals are great together and it would be super cool if you could figure that out. I totally love your drumming and I appreciate how clean and respectful you keep it. Totally the friendliest and most helpful channel for drummers!
Awesome vid as always Gabe. Still jamming to Trauma, Deadweight is probably my fav I Prevail song. Keep rocking dude! 🤘🤘
Thanks Joseph! So glad you are still rocking out!
That's super helpful! Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Simple and effective tips🙌🙌🙌🙌
Theres always things to learn from your videos👍✍
Nice video Gabe!
Gabe lots of great tips and advice!!
❤️❤️
Just on the set up point
Setting your seat up so you sit a little higher does a lot for how you play. I notice a lot with beginner set ups, their seat can be pretty low. Sitting a bit higher can make your foot work a lot easier and improves your posture, which also means you can play for a lot longer with out getting back pain.
Not saying that it works for everyone, but I just noticed when I started setting my kit up for practice and at gigs, when I had my seat up a bit higher it just made everything a lot easier.
Thanks a lot man
I can't say enough good things about working on coordination. Not only does it allow you to play cool grooves and fills, but it just let's you express yourself so much better on the instrument. Wanna play a ride pattern keeping a back beat while doing a left foot pattern. If ur coordinated enough, you can just do those things as they come to you, and not get stuck in the weeds everytime you try something new
Si señor, buen vídeo. 10 puntos que todos los que empiezan con la batería deben de tener en cuenta. Gracias desde Albacete, España.
Thanks Gabe!
Man this guy rocks! You know thank you for this video it means a lot to know that these videos exist! I myself am a drummer and in fact that’s my whole channel! Drumming content I absolutely love the drums. I hope to achieve the level of drumming that you have one day! 🥁🤘
The Garage Life you know what that is true I checked out your drumming channel and I am very impressed!!
A guy with a Camera yeah man he is a pretty funny CZcamsr as well as a great drummer. lol I said I want to achieve his level some day.
Also thanks man! Means a lot
The Garage Life yup you know it!
Great Video Gabe!
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Even though I've been playing for 16 years, this video made me want to practice more, and also teach.
you have inspired me to practice more again
Good information!
Glad it was helpful!
You the best teacher for ever!
Thank you
Very motivational 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
i have played the drums for a bit over 6 months and play with my dad who plays guitar. the drummer in my dads band is my teacher as well and they are really good friends so i sometimes play with the band as well. its awesome but sometimes i wish they gave me more feedback that isn't "that was awesome" because i want to know what i can do better. but thanks for the video and ihope i continue to play.
Yeah thanks for that advice dude🤘 ill keep my journey onwards...🥢🏃🏻♂️ drumbeatsonline , adam tuminaro, drumeo.. rock on🤘✌️
Lol I started drumming 3 years ago and I learned my first beat from u gabe and now I’m just watching this because I wanna feel like a beginner
Fantastic advice as always! The only thing I would add is hearing protection! I didn't realize the importance of hearing protection when I started drumming and I regret that very much.
I totally agree!!
I totally agree! I told my church youth leader( my drum mentor) that I was becoming immune to the sound, and he died laughing and told me I was going deaf lol. Hearing protection is very important
Another thing that I did in my early days playing, was if a beat was too hard for me because my brain was lagging behind the beat to keep up, i'd slow down the beat I was playing or even remove one of the bits, so remove the hi hat and only play the kick and snare or other combinations then start to add the removed bit again at that slower speed until I get it down. Then try speeding it up until it gets too hard - rinse and repeat! I NEVER QUIT! That is why after 9 years playing I am where I am now with my band. Always learning though and trying new things or progress myself.
The first beat you played in this video was the very first beat I learned how to play. I taught myself using my ears and ended up playing in a band haha
I love your contents and I want to remark something that may be benefical, I can see your effort about making CZcams vids(flipping camera, angles, short close-up videos of practise pad, crash and etc.) but my eyes are being tired sometimes because of lightnings of your room, It's so dark you can put a something like spotlight or a powerful lamp to the top of drum kit I think It is gonne be perfect for your drum cover videos and for us, By the way we can see comfortably and clearly your kit and you. Thanks for this content, Have a good work🙏
Lucky I was born into drumming and performing so I really made only a couple of these mistakes because I had someone telling me everything to do and eventually when I got older I started doing my own thing and became pretty good, but it took years and it has been very fun. I thank my parents and brother for doing this
Hi Gabe, I have a question. I’ve been playing drums for now 2 years and a half and I want to buy a new practice pad with a support under it. What would you suggest to me? Thanks in advance! Keep it up I love what you do!❤️
i remember my first day thinking, man maybe i need a teacher. but then by the end of the week i was able to understand patterns and get my rhythm down a lot better.
I am getting my first drum set shipped to me and it’s going to arrive in 2 days. I want to be in a band some day you make it look really fun.
Congrats Joshua! That's super exciting!
The intro is dope! XD
Awesome video
Thank you!
You r my hero gabe.u have been my teacher since I watched u play.DBO academy is make me strong especially my left hand.
Thats so awesome! I'm so glad to hear you are crushing your weaknesses with DBO Academy!
@@DrumBeatsOnline i have been trying to contact u through gmail.please see it make my future bright .You worked hard in ur childhood and me too.I had a mentor for 6 years, but now i want to learn advanced drumming ,that will be possible by u sir. HATS off to u and your band . By your faithful student - ABHINAV
I don’t wanna be cocky but I love watching videos like these to almost notice that I’m better ig like I can do these things and I don’t have to get in that hole of feeling like I’m not learnin and just stuck at that wall dude
That beater on his kick looks amazing!
5.25 to 5.47 LOL!!! very informative broo THANK YOU!!!
This is so true!!
🙏🏽
I litterally just came back from my drums lol
Love the vids man
Heck yes 🤘🏽
I am a 13 year percussionist and I started playing drums a couple of months ago. It was easy to learn because I already have the technique part (I can do paradiddles 200 bpms), but it’s missing my capacity of improvising cool fills. What’s your advice for me? I enjoyed the video btw
Hopefully this whole Corona Virus thing ends soon so I can see you play in July!!! Hopefully you guys come to Australia 🇦🇺
I started playing when I was 4 and my parents got me a cheap e kit but that ment when I got an acoustic it felt unnatural and I pretty much had to learn again
Sounds diff with the humors that you have 👏👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🥁🥁
Super video. i am playing drums for one year. its a fun. Next fun is to combine drums and making videos.
I wish i had a kit to use but they're super expensive, i used a kit at school like 4 times a week at lunch but I've never been able to own one. Great video! Keep it up🤙
Check out Donner electronic drum set. Under $ 500.00.
Good vid
Another great video. Can I ask for the DBO academy is there a base level you should be at before you join? For example I taught myself so haven't really focused on rudiments or various sticking patterns or even reading music but I can hold a beat and have not terrible co-ordination. Is it worth joining the waitlist? Cheers!
I came into this to see if I’m still making these mistakes.
Edit: I can now proudly say that I am no longer making these mistakes. Thanks Gabe!
You should do a how to improve double bass coordination video. I'd appreciate that a ton. No matter what I try I cant seen to get myself coordinated on anything longer than a simple 4 stroke.
After over 35 years of playing ill just say there is no wrong or right in drumming, it's an art with absolutely 0 rules! Play and set up absolutely any way YOU want! I self taught myself drums by playing on 4 encyclopaedia britanica books, no phones, no CZcams.
You got a nice set there man. Is it a Ayotte??
God bless my parents for letting me put a kit in my room when I lived there....they must be crazy people!!
Thanks bro
🙏🏽
