Lots of work animating while using the same reference footage of performers dancing and moving. The reference footage wasn’t cheap to make in the first place.
It may or may not be rotoscoping depending on who you ask, but even with full rotoscope it’s still an artist drawing a character over the model provided by an actor.
It’s not a cheat. It’s an artistic collaboration between performer and animator.
The modern version is often animators using their computer’s camera to record themselves and using that reference for the characters they are animating.
A very interesting bit of film making history when it cost lots of money to create reference footage, where now everyone has everything they need to create, edit, and publish/share the reference footage in their pocket.

Not only that but at the time a lot of this came out, Disney was almost broke. Sleeping Beauty was a commercial flop. This style of animation was not so much a new style for Disney as it was a cost cutting measure. 101 Dalmatians effectively saved Disney from bankruptcy, following the failure of Sleeping Beauty, Disney went from 500 animators to 80. They had to cut costs where they could.

I like to think of this as a clever Easter egg. I mean if Geri in Toy Story 2 is seen as a super clever cameo, even though it was just done because they didn't have the time or money to create a new human rig, I'd say this is safe.

I actually thought the “Head Swaggle” seen in many early movies would be number 1
I do love the puppy kisses recycled scene and I think it was because of that scene in jungle book, that when they did the anime based on the story, that they made those two specific wolves into his brothers that are recurring in the anime. In fact in the final episode of the anime, they give mowgli the same kind of puppy kisses too. It’s really sweet

They weren't always reused because they were nice, they were reused because of budgetary constraints. Cinderella saved the company from bankruptcy in 1950, mainly because of WWII. Then after Walt died before the release of The Jungle Book, Wolfgang Reitherman had to resort to the same tactics to keep the company going. They reused a lot of older cells with The Jungle Book, as well as Robin Hood. The loss of Walt caused the company to struggle into the 70s, which is why most of the recycling happened then. Also Duchess from The Aristocats danced like Maid Marion/Snow White during Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat. As you can tell, I'm a huge Disney fan and have been for 30 years, so I know loads of random facts.

For this list; I’m doing the “10 Ways that Brynhildr in the Darkness Is Different From Elfen Lied”. Brynhildr in the Darkness (2014) may had been called an “Elfen Lied rip-off”, received many harsh criticism and bombed in Japan during its initial release but as times goes by the cult hit anime series became more appreciate when it comes to the understanding of the styles and elements of the storyline. I have a favorite piece of reused Disney animation in a movie but it was for a movie that was one of Disney's hybrid films. In the animated "Stick-to-it-Ivity" musical number from 1949's "So Dear to my Heart", there was a section that told how Christopher Columbus told his crew to "stick to it" while braving through a terrible storm with a sea monster and several gusts of two anthropomorphic wind clouds that were actually reused from the storm section of the "Pastoral Symphony" segment in 1940's "Fantasia". I honestly love the happily ever after dance. Given the fact that Sleeping Beauty is the original dance scene, but only Beauty and the Beast and pull it off, again. I cannot imagine another Disney movie recreating the scene.

How cool!! I didn’t notice all of these except the Mowgli and Christopher Robin one. I was actually a toddler when I noticed that. I was still in my first years of life, yet my mind was still able to process the fact that what Mowgli did was exactly what Christopher Robin did. I was a puzzled at that moment lol.

considering that animation wasn't cheap back in those days, it's understandable. plus if you have a winning formula, then it's a win-win situation. characters are allowed to have fun, and if that means dancing like an orangutang, the so be it

1.) When the henchman is throwing darts at the cat.
2.) When Edgar throws things at O'Malley.
3.) Jasper's face when he gets hit with a club and holds hands on head.
4.) When Edgar gets hit with hale bail, same expression, same head holding.

I believe I heard or read somewhere that one of the reasons Disney recycled some scenes was because of their budget, which makes sense. As part of their history, these Easter eggs, or allusions, make for more entertainment for us fans. 😊

There is one piece of recycled Disney animation I did notice even as a kid, and that's the pushing the fat character into the hole, in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and One Hundred and One Dalmatians. In which Pooh gets stuck in Rabbits home after eating too much honey and in 101 Dalmatians the fat dalmatian puppy gets stuck in the hole as Tibbs was trying to help him escape from Horace and Jasper.

One of the reasons for recycling animation in those days was simply due to cost reasons. Especially when Disney slashed their animation budget to fund Disneyland. Even the quality of the animation went noticeably downhill by the 60s, as compared to the early films of the 30s and 40s.

  • @frankydman
    @frankydman Před 2 lety

For the curious- one individual can be pinpointed as responsible for the vast majority of these “recycled” shots.
Wolfgang Reitherman was one of Disney’s legendary “Nine Old Men,” and took over movie directing duties starting in the 1960s.
It should be noted though- recycling is not an accurate term here; properly it is called “rotoscoping” and it was Reitherman’s signature move in the same way the head swaggle was Milt Kahl’s signature move.
Reitherman was not one to take chances when it came to animation, if a shot worked, he stuck with it. However, it had nothing to do with time or money. As Disney Animator Floyd Norman put it- rotoscoping was neither cost effective or a time saver; in fact it could take longer and cost just as much to rotoscope an old sequence compared to coming up with new animation.
It simply came down to the fact that Wolfgang Reitherman liked using what worked; he preferred not to take chances with what animation could do. Hence, it’s no coincidence why the recycling was really prevalent between the 60s and 80s
In short- with the exception of Princess and the Frog and Beauty and the Beast, every film referenced here was one he had his hand in
