I was in the hospital for a week. I really was shocked at the lack of common sense built into the system. I couldn't get a cough drop without selling a kidney.

Perhaps *because it's a system. The people have left their common sense and nobody is accountable cause they just pass the buck.

I spent a week in hospital after having a surgery done (unrelated) and maybe it's just where I live, but they were fantastic. My biggest complaint was the food, if you could call it that 😂
I actually ended up getting my period in there and they were kind enough to supply me with everything I needed.
      Can't believe you couldn't get a soother/ cough drop.

You know, I'm generally pretty positive about my life, but I find those moments of frustration we encounter when managing lifelong illnesses just remind me of the weight of everything I have to manage in order to keep my life moving forward, and it's just that crushing exhaustion of YET AGAIN having to be my own advocate.
I hope they were able to sort it out quickly and that the new supplies work perfectly!

Im waiting for my ileostomy surgery. Ive found your videos really helpful. Its good to see all sides of stoma life so i wont be as shocked and upset when these things happen. Im sorry they are happening to you, but please know that whilst its frustrating and upsetting, you are being incredibly helpful and inspiring to many of us. I am in the UK so we have slightly different products, but knowing the differences is very important. Keep being you ❤

I have auditory processing disorder and I didn’t realize how much I rely on people’s facial expressions and mouth reading until the pandemic and I found myself having a really hard time understanding anyone. I can hear no problem but my brain struggles to interpret what is hearing without the face of who is speaking. So talking on the phone for me is very stressful. I get you about how frustrating it is to spend so much time on the phone. It uses up a lot of energy for me.

A dear friend of mine came home from the hospital with an ileostomy at 95 years old. We ended up switching her to Coloplast products and they were so superior to any of the other ones. She couldn't see to do the bags that snap off and learned to deal with the velcro closure and did really well! So many less blowout using the barrier strips to keep the bag secure. Diet mishaps were the cause of many of the blowout issues. One simple tip, no hot chocolate before bed. We had a good long run with it, she almost made 101 years old, shy by just 37 days. It amazes me the lack of dietary changes and understanding that the professionals have & share with someone once they're sent home. I spent hours on you tube and forums trying learn all I could to help her. One thing we always did was she would have 2 or 3 marshmallows before each change and the output would come to a halt long enough to make the change.

I totally feel ur frustration! They refuse to give me 20 sure seal stickers (the only way my flange stays on) and will only give me 10 per month. That means I can only use half my supplies bc I get 20 flanges and bags, but only 10 stickers. That's akin to having 20 pairs of underwear, but only 10 have elastic, rendering the other 10 useless. It's maddening! They also dropped my box of wipes from 3 boxes to 1 box per 3 months. It's so annoying

I’m not an ostomy patient myself. I am still a patient. Getting people who are supposed to be taking care of us to understand what you’d THINK is something simple is enough to make you question the presence of a brain. I’ve been trying to get a hysterectomy for decades. Doctors told me that I’m too young and that’s I’d regret it. I’ve got an introverted uterus, fibroids and possible endometriosis. I’ve had issues since I was 14. I’ll be 42 in March. I’ve had one issue since birth and the fibroids for about 12 years. I’ve been in a lot of pain every month because of both. But I guess I’m supposed to regret not being in pain and feeling I’ve got a vice grip around my uterus for a week straight every month. Just last year I FINALLY found an OB that is willing to do the survey. Which, HALLELUJAH, is happening in a couple of weeks. He agrees that I should’ve had it done years ago. I won’t repeat the words he used for the other doctors as they were just shy of professional and could land me in CZcams jail. Don’t get me started on the pharmacy side. I used to have to go a specialty pharmacy for my asthma meds. That was the only way I could get a nebulizer. My pulmonologist was awesome. He’d make sure the script got to them. But on the pharmacy’s end it was a different story. When it came to actually being able to FIND my scripts I could only compare them to a couple of Jeff Dunham characters. They were like a cross between Bubba J and Peanut. Half dense, half hyper. And neither knew what the hell they were doing.

I've had the boxes/units mixup before. I'm supposed to get 720 catheters (24 boxes) every three months; one month I got ONE catheter, carefully put in a big zipper bag, in a HUGE box. As far as Hollister's quality problems, I've had slightly different issues - in my case, twice recently the bag has popped off the flange because the ring that locks the two together has loosened up. As loose as the ring interface has gotten, I'm surprised that I haven't had a leak, since my output is often liquid.

  • @AndiSchneider
    @AndiSchneider Před 3 měsíci +1

I totally understand the frustration. I don’t have an ostomy, but I have a g/j tube and a Hickman catheter for TPN. Just the other day I only got one box with two TPN bags, my 28 bags of IV Benadryl, and that’s it. There was no tubing to hook up the TPN or the nausea meds. I didn’t have the vitamins and meds that you push inside the TPN bag, no syringes, and all my IV phenergan was missing. I guess the orders got separated in transit, but I had to deal with a big argument with insurance. I’m glad my infusion team got together to get it fixed the next morning and sent out an emergency dose of my nausea meds. I’ve been dealing with serious frustration because my stoma site where my new g/j was just re sited is pouring everything out of the stoma site. If I take a drink or am able to take a few bites without needing to vent it will just come out the stoma site, which is basically vomit. I go through so many boxes of hypafix and dressing supplies. Because I am TPN dependent my insurance won’t even cover the basic supplies for my feeding tube. I have to pay for gauze, adhesive remover, barrier cream, and tape. It adds up quite a bit when you are a single mom on disability. They’ve refused to cover ferral bags, so I have to vent in a cup or one of my own concoctions made of a plastic sandwich bag and tape. I wish it were easier for us.

  • @liz9843
    @liz9843 Před 3 měsíci

Just a comment on the bag leaking:
Those rings are probably formed on a plastic injection molding machine.
The forms on those machines DO wear out over time, and if the manufacturer doesn’t have the right tolerances on either the finished product or the metal mold drawings, you could, over time, end up with small tolerances stackups that result in an imperfect seal between the 2 parts.
(I worked in manufacturing, I’ve seen this happen both with older molds, and when a new mold was installed but the new mold was milled just a little bit different than the old mold, and now the tolerances of the finished products aren’t quite right.)

I use Austin pharmacy here in Maryland not sure if they ship to other states but I've never had any issues with getting either a bunch of one items or literally only one. When it comes to supplies I use Hollister bags and flanges. When it comes to paste I use coloplaste rings and strip paste with the tube paste from Hollister.
I have had the Hollister bags leak from the side before. Usually it's right after I but it on. But I believe it's from me laying to change my bag. I find it much easier for me to lay down to change it vs standing. Though I do a lot of flying and changing in a airplane bathroom is always fun.

Ring all manufacturers up and ask for samples it won't cost you anything. Iwas not told about all the things I would need. They were very good in other ways a stoma nurse came to see me for a few days in hospital.

Maggie, I know the frustration of dealing with medical supply companies. In January 2023 I was switched to Stelara. It requires a loading dose by I.V.
and maintenance doses by self injection.
The I.V. was suppose to be at an infusion center. The infusion center would not schedule Stelara because they were not trained on it. None of the other centers here would take it either. Finally a home nursing service agreed to do my infusion.
The specialty pharmacy, even after my G.I. office and I both told them it was a home infusion, shipped the Stelara without shipping the IV pole and other supplies. The prescription for the home IV supplies was faxed to them at least 3 times. Many very long phone calls later, and complaints up the line to management, they finally shipped out the pole and other supplies. It delayed starting Stelara by 6 weeks! I was so sick and was stuck on Prednisone for a extended period of time. It was a nightmare.
    These companies just don't think!

I’m so so sorry it’s so frustrating to get supplies that you need so desperately in a situation of health is this
It is such a shame that they cannot find someone that truly has a heart someone like you to troubleshoot for these companies they would owe this person a very, very decent salary to listen to people to get input and to be creative for even newer more wonderful examples of ostomy supplies
I wish I was younger now I would want to do this myself for all of these people who deal with this issue every day, and for the ones like you who try to be so beautiful along the way This particular field is so needed, and it needs to be people that do understand that do care, you don’t have to wear a colostomy bag to understand you have to listen to those who do and want to help them have a better life!!!!

I like the essential ones most, even though they only work for ten seconds or so. I also like the 3m lollipop prep, but my insurance gives me the middle finger on them. Hi I’m so glad you’re trying these. I use these bags as my old Convatec bags (without the fabric outer layer) were discontinued.
I’m happy with them apart from the filter! Would you please feed back to them about this,
    1. Covering the filter with the sticker doesn’t stop the air coming out (and so I’m getting unwanted odour). It’s impossible on 50% of the bags! Please explain to ostomy companies that you can’t make something airtight through fabric! I’ve even sat in the bath and submerged the bag to see where the air leak was coming from as I couldn’t find what was happening and it was the seal around the filter failing and air seeping through the fabric around the filter! It’s such a pain cos I get terrible pancaking if I don’t get the bag 100% airtight!
    2. The filter blocks so easily and then starts leaking!
I have always loved Convatec and used since 1977!! But these last 3 years I’m getting so many quality issues. I’ve never had problems like this in all my 46 yrs of having both colostomy and urostomy!
I appreciate you calling out what a pain it is dealing with medical stuff like this! ❤❤❤

I use closed-end non-draiinables. Wouldn't want to use anything else. I do change four to five times a day. All I had to do to get that approved by my insurance was get my dr to provide a letter of medical necessity to my supply company (Adapt). No problem there. I'm not cleaning those nasty drainables. As you say, personal preference. By the way,. I use Convatec. You use the exact same products I do. Never have problems. I had to laugh about the 50 boxes of wipes...LOL @ the workforce they have in the warehouse. Lord, do help us.

I try to order when I start getting low BUT I’m not waiting until I run out and just put the last one on !! Are they crazy !!😱🤦‍♀️🙃

My new supply company doesn’t carry any spray adhesive removers. They expect you to remove a bag with wipes. I’ll be ordering it and paying for it. My last company allowed one or the other because insurance won’t pay for both. Somebody within these companies that has an ostomy needs to straighten out these insurance and supply companies.

Ugh! 😡 Sorry Maggie, I always have issues too & yes it’s beyond frustrating. And very time consuming. I pay out of pocket for my supplies bc my insurance doesn’t cover them until you meet your deductible, and mine is over $5,000. And honestly, it drives me nuts when ppl go on & on about U.S. healthcare. It’s always been about profit. And nowadays, with private equity firms buying up hospitals everywhere? The quality has gone down dramatically. The trouble is, you wouldn’t notice if you went in to have a baby, or get your tonsils removed. But if you have chronic illness? Believe me, you notice. Sorry about your one wipe - 😂 what a joke!!!

Yes, girl! Let's talk about the unhealthy, health challenged system! I agree with you, 300%.
That system sucks and needs an entire reform. And that reform MUST be made with the involvement of patients!!! Pharmaceutical reform MUST happen too. And that, the same thing, WITH the involvement of those who consume/use the meds, the products...!
And I'm not yet on insurance reform. That needs an entire post, in itself!
    Now, training, training, training...
...training our employees, NOT ones of outsourced compagnies! How about facilitating access to American managers!?! Oh, girl, do I have opinions and do I have experienced socialized medicine a lot, in Montreal and now, here. Where insurances decides what "Patients" (and yes, do patients ever need to be above patient), can or cannot have access to, it's also decided, with their own money, already "$$invested$$" in these companies, that they already paid "$$out of pocket$$", for and very well deducted from their paychecks, having to again, "repay" for items/products that insurance companies, decide wether patients may have this or that product, item, piece of medical equipment, they will cover or not and that, with your/our $$$money$$$! In Montreal it's the government who decides all that, here in the US, it's the insurance compagnies. NO difference! The minute decisions are made for us, and with our💰money, how is it called?! What kind of system is, THAT!?!

Whenever I change my ostomy there is always some output on the ring and sometimes really close to my flange where it almost looks like it could have leaked, Hoping I could still try the moldable with a ring, but at the same time am I putting too much product close to my stoma and I am afraid of choking my stoma

I have kind of the same situation with Protective wipes.. They come in a box of 50 but insurance only allows me 25 a month.. So being it is only a half a box I always am getting them in little baggies and wondering if they are going to do it correctly.. Have you ever tried their accordion flange? I have a hernia and one of the things I do love about holister is their floating flange. It is so much easier for me to snap the bag on.. When I tried Coloplast that was one of the hard things on me was trying to push the bag on the flange.
