Recently purchased a Trijicon RMR Novak Dovetail mount for my Rock Island 1911. I wasn't sure if I could mount it myself, but I persisted and was able to complete it. I AM NOT a gunsmith by any means and if you do not feel comfortable installing this mount, take it to a trusted smith. Worth the money if you do not want to have your slide milled for the RMR!!!
Sort of funny, all the bros saying “to high, do it right!” are the same guys now pushing each other down to buy super tall risers on their rifles - haha!
Man this is the best silent instruction video I’ve ever seen lol
Nice work!
Nice work? He didn't even remove the set screws for the rear sight. Complete amateur !
Looks awesome, currently getting one of these installed on my .45 operator. Glad to hear it’s held zero for you so well.
Enjoyed a full-watch of your DIY install. I visited the website you provided to one of your viewers (below) that shows various dovetail rear sight cuts. Thanks for your response to other folks' comments. Their comments and your response made me a subscriber to your channel. Have a fine week. 👍🏽🙂 4/27/22
Apart from height could be better than a slide cut and plate mount - especially for the trijicon SRO. The dovetail mount let’s you sit the RMR/ SRO further back on the slide, you loose BUIS but the SRO hood will not overhang the ejection port. The RMR / SRO screws fix into the dovetail- a lot deeper than on a slide cut mount which only typically have 2-3 thread turns.
The negative is obviously more over bore height but the positives seem to outweigh it. I will give it a try on my STI Costa Carry Comp anyway.
Very nice video. Just read every comment. Very impressed how you responded to the bullshit ones. Great job!!!!! Love the gun and looks....
Straight to the point, I appreciate the video. Thank you sir 👌🏻
superb video! just ordered mine from EGW for my Shadow 2. sweet setup you got over there. subbed!
I've been dying to put RDS on my RIA Tact Ultra MS and saw this video. I'm glad it fits well. Now I can do the exact same thing you did on my 1911. Thanks for the upload!
that thing is a beast at the shooting range!
Im proud that you are using a philippine made 1911 i think that is a armscor 1911 hi cap if im not mistaken
Thanks for making this video.
Excellent video. Thank you.
So relaxing to watch. At the end of your video I feel fulfilled, LOL! Wanna buy Rock Island Armscor and do the same set up. Thank you for sharing.
i know Im randomly asking but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account?
I somehow forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Nicholas Titan Instablaster ;)
@Willie Jensen i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and im trying it out atm.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Willie Jensen it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my account!
@Nicholas Titan No problem :D
If you like the 1911 platform, check out the Springfield TRP, Dan Wesson, Wilson Combat.
Has the added weight to the slide effected performance at all? Any malfunctions?
excellent teaching demo
Thank you so much I was trying to find a video on how to do this or even if it would fit
Thanks for watching and the comment!
Thanks for the informative video
This option is really only viable for people who don't want to alter their slide. My reasoning for this statement is that for $80 more you can get your slide cut and returned to you promptly. If you're agonizing over $80 you can't afford a serviceable budget optic anyway. That's not a snobby remark because I've got only budget optics in my pistols. It just is what it is.
Thank you for your Videos..the old and new ones - cause my eyes won´t get better, i´m thinking about doing the same but was wondering how it looks.
I really have to say, i thought it would look much worse...thats an absolutely usable solution...price/performance is really nice.
Here in Europe, I got a plate from Toni System for my 1911 Springfield ...doing my first tries now with an LPA and red fibre front...if that doesnt work out well for me. I´m going to change at least one gun to the plate with optics!
I wanted to know if that gun was optics ready or I can put a mount, glad to find this video.
Pretty cool! Trijicon wants to sell more red dots, sell adapter plates. I saw a guy do the same with an adapter plate on his Beretta 92FS.
seams easy enough, but that height over bore is nuts!
Think this will be the next upgrade on both my Rock islands
Haha I didn't think it was possible. Never seen an optic on a 1911. Probably got to change out the front sights as well. Good job man.
Thank you for watching
I have this same one I suggest Pierce grips P14 if you've never tried them. You need to Dremel it a bit for the ambidextrious safety and magwell. :)
I've been eye balling a few different styles of grips. I definitely want some that are a bit more on the aggressive side. I'll check the P14 grips out!
Very nice, thanks!
I just got one and I’m looking at replacing the sights do you have a recommendation to what I should get and the size great video man
I am wondering if this dovetail mount would be applicable for my Sig Sauer 1911 EXTREME pistol that comes with Sig Night Sights
Love the video. What brand of magwell is that one love the way it looks!!!
Looks nice just looks weird when its that much wider than the slide
This is a must for anyone who gets a 1911 with very thin sights or almost invisible, as in both the front and rear sights are chrome/nickel finish. Reacquisition takes some time. No good in any situation. Red dot mount? Not the least bit of a bother. :)
I need one. @_@
Hell ya nice video. I just picked up my ria tac cs and I wanna setup pretty much like that.
Thanks Jeffrey! I enjoy my RIA A LOT! Especially now that i got the RMR mounted.
@@MatSuPewPew907 Have you thought of getting a skinnier optic or a proper milling job? How’s it handling?
@@moose2934 I had lined up a mill job for my 1911, but due to COVID crippling the world, I wasn't able to get a quick enough turn around time. 6-8 weeks was the quickest, and the local shops here in Alaska were swamped with orders. This mount was a quick fix for me and to be honest, it has worked out great! I think in the future I will get a mill job, but I will keep the RMR as my optic.
I have a (echo 1 TAP pistol) airsoft gun and was wondering if Its any different (remove on screw and remove or is there more.
I think im going to do this to my Sig Scorpion.
Good video we await range time video groups and distant and fun time
That video is now up!
@Mat-Su Pew Pew You know Arctic Ammo has a guy that will mill the slide for 150 bucks. I know it’s a little more especially with the plate which ran me about 250 but I think it is way better than just using the dovetail. Just a thought. Great videos by the way.
Where is artic ammo located?
Very cool alternative for milling the slide, would be nice if it could have been a little bit lower.
Height over bore is definitely taller than a mill job and it takes a bit of getting use to when pointing in. Still would recommend the mount tho!
The problem with a mill job is your are then limited to just that red dot and is hard to change brands of red dots if you want
I think it looks amazing. I don't know much about trijicon, but on Vortex and holosun, the screws shouldn't be that tight for the actual sight. You can mess up your zero, and possibly damage the sight.
That's part of the reason I didn't go with Vortex or Holosun, although I do like their red dots. Also, when using this mount, the threads were pre-treated with lock-tite which made it a little tougher to seat on the mount initially. Trijicon RMR's have been tested and proven to be, in most professional opinions, the most reliable, rugged red dot for personal carry and LEO carry. If you are interested in some good testing pages, I recommend Sage Dynamics. Aaron does a very thorough review of available red dots for pistols and has one of the best testing parameters that I have seen on CZcams.
@@MatSuPewPew907 wrong, all sights should !be torqued properly. Spend the money and buy a torque screw driver. Torque it down to 15.
Nice bro.
Thanks
What brand of rail do you have in this gun?
Where can a buy just like yours red dot and fiber optic front sight sir?
Great job on the video and installation. 1911 looks good so ignore all the idiotic firearm snobs with the negative comments.
Thanks! I feel like the enormous amount of positive responses to my pistol far out weigh the negatives.
what mag well is that?
What is the tube with the tiny needle? Is cleaner, lube or what?
U gotta pull the slide back a bit before taking out ur pin
Great demonstration thank you
Yeah buying that shit now
does this slow the slide down and weaken the ejection too much? That mount looks pretty solid and therefore heavy.
I haven't felt any difference in the recoil since installing the mount. I've run several different brands of FMJ through it and have not had any malfunctions yet. I have yet to test any hollow points or carry ammunition. i plan to shoot a video on the range with this pistol.
Great Job! Thanks for sharing. What is the mount brand? Will it only work for a Trijicon?
Stefano Libertas So the mount brand is Trijicon. It specifically made for a “Novak Dovetail”. Depending on the Gun manufacturers, the dovetail cuts have a variety of styles. And as far as I know, the mount will work with the Trijicon RMR and the Holosun 507c (the holosun was manufactured to match the RMR’s footprint for mounting) This mount is made specifically for the RMR. And you can purchase it via Amazon as well.
The firearm looks great w the red dot but do u know if there is a plate that have a rear sight install
I am not 100% sure if there is such a plate or not. The only option i could see is for a proper milling where you wouldnt have to utilize the dovetail for the iron sights.
How’d the site workout at that height? And what distance did you zero it at? I’m curious as to how the location of the impact changed at nearer or farther targets from which you zeroed at.
I zero at 10 yards for pistols. At 100 yards I am holding high to get hits (but why would anyone shoot a pistol at 100yrds any normal time?) Plus 45 is a slow heavy round so it drops quicker. Check out my 3 year follow up video for this.
Nice video! What kinda magwell are you running?
@epack408 this is the stock magwell that comes with the pistol
I have this same model pistol. Does the mount require the mechanical advantage from the pusher? Is it possible to remove the old sights from/install the new plate into the novak mount by hand? Or is it too tight a fit to manually push out?
Just a fore warning, I AM NO GUN SMITH. But if I didn't have the pusher, I was considering attempting this by hand (i.e. hammer and a punch) I think it could be done although I think pushing the new mount in would have been difficult. Could possibly bind while tapping into place. I purchased my pusher on amazon for like $30 and it was definitely on the low end. Would recommend one for sure.
very do-able with a small hammer and a plastic or hardwood punch
Great video.. where did you get the sight pusher?
The ol' Jungle website had it. Amazon for the win.
I dig the format. Do you find the Rock Island to be reliable? Thanks!
Thanks! So far, so good with the RI. I’ve carried it hunting, four wheeling, and pretty much anything outdoors. I’ve put several thousand rounds of ammo through it, mostly fmj for training. But a variety of carry ammos as well. I love this pistol.
@@MatSuPewPew907 - thank you for the info! Bye!
@@MatSuPewPew907 it looks good, good to hear it's good after thousands of rounds
Where did you purchase this at. I have a Wilson combat Vickers elite and I was wondering if that mount would be able to be install on my Vickers.
@Robert Hoff so i looked at the Wilson Vickers Elite and it looks like it is a Novak cut. I would purchase the mount and compare it to your cut before installing. This is a Trijicon Mount, but i purchased it from Amazon for $100. Here is a link to a picture of common dovetail cuts: www.egwguns.com/1911-dovetails
I saw this EGW video today in fact and I bought products from them before good products and only I think $45 For the
mount👍
Will you have a video showing you shooting it?
I will have a video soon. The ammo shortage in Alaska is keeping me from going to the range every week like I use to!
May I ask which base plate did you use looks like EGW?
The base plate came with the Trijicon mount plate. It was part of the kit. Trijicon doesn't specify what manufacturer the plate is from.

Hi there. Very nice video. I have a Colt 1911 Government Model Series 70. Do you know if this RMR Novak Dovetail will fit on it without any problem? Any help will be appreciate it
@Javier De La Tejera Thanks for watching! So is it a newer competition model 70 or an older model? The majority of newer 1911's are going with the novak sights. Here is a link that show the different 1911 sight cuts: www.egwguns.com/1911-dovetails
@@MatSuPewPew907 Thanks a lot buddy. i appreciate your help.!!!
Would suppressor height sights co-witness with lens view??
Not unless they were double a normal suppressor height sight. This set up sits too high and utilizes the rear sight cut anyways.
What if you don’t have those tools like that sight pusher vice thingy????
Take it to a local gunsmith. I wouldn’t do this without the right tools and even the tools i used here, were mostly cheap amazon type tools.
Can you tell me what sight pusher tool you used?
I bought a Sylvan Sight Pusher off of Amazon for $60. I already had the drill press vice that i locked it into to. Amazon has a newer pusher on it called the ATG Patch that i might give a try as well.
Do you need to adjust the sight afterwards?
By adjust, do mean sight in the dot? I did sight in the rmr after mounting it, i just didnt show that.
Extremely Nice Video !!!! .... Thank You For Sharing ..... The Armscor / Rock Island Slides Have a Really Odd Rear And Front Dovetail Cut ....Smaller Than The Standard Cut..... Did You Have To File Down The RMR Mount At All Any ??? .... Thank You !
Ella Emanuelle Rose I was fortunate enough that I did not have to file the mount down. After looking through RIA’s 1911’s, depending on the model series, the 1911’s have a lot of unique dovetail cuts. I was lucky enough to have a ‘Novak Style Cut’ on my Tac Ultra.
My RIA also has a Novak Cut.
Dude is that a .45? If so why does it look like a double stacked mag well ? And your flared magwell where did u get it ?
It is a double stack 45. Holds 14 +1. The Rock Island Tac Ultra hc comes standard with the flared magwell from the manufacturer. They also have a 10mm version of this pistol that holds 17+1 i believe. Super reliable for me so far!
@@MatSuPewPew907 14 rnds of 230 lead! Love it! Great nightstand gun.
I *HATE* that sight pusher more than anything I can think of - that thing is the bane of my existence! Every single time I use it swear I’m going to toss in in the garbage as some as I’m done.
Fucking Beautiful
What kind of magwell are you running?
The Tac Ultra comes standard with the flared magwell that you see in the video. Not the smoothest well, but a huge improvement for a 1911 for sure.
Could this work on a bb gun? (I have a kwc 1911 tactical) if you any answers please tell me
Honestly from looking at it, I don’t think the dovetail cut is large enough to accommodate the mount as it comes in the box. It looks like a shallow Novak cut but if you really wanted to know, contact the manufacturer of your BB gun and ask them what style 1911 cut they apply to the pistols.
@@MatSuPewPew907 appreciate your feedback
Very good video
Thinking of getting one for my Sig 1911. Has it been stable?
So far so good. About 2000 Rounds through the gun since the install. No movement from the mount. Would highly recommend!

This is like watching a video from the Primitive Technology guy where he finally gives up on using primitive weapons.
“I need this in my life.” - Simps for a 1911 w/ a red dot.
How does that mount work. Looking to mount a red on my ronin 10mm
Your ronin will need to have a Novak Rear sight cut in order for this mount to be installed. The ronin looks like it is a Novak Cut but i would take it to a gun smith to be sure.
@@MatSuPewPew907 word iam in Seward who do you recommend wild west or other

How's it been holding up? Any problems?
So far no issues. I'm hoping to get it out more this summer, now that ammo is becoming a little more plentiful here in Alaska. I did carry this 1911 with the mount on during hunting season. It held up nicely through some rough ATV riding, laying prone on rocks, brush etc. As far as I can tell, the mount has not moved on the slide itself side to side and it has held zero since I mounted it in this video.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! What is the name of the vice grip he is using at 2:32?! Thank you so much for any help!!

@@MatSuPewPew907you the man!
@@MatSuPewPew907could you link the sight pusher? thanks a million man!
What magwell is that?
The magwell comes standard from RIA on this model of 1911. It works really well and I haven't needed to change it at all.
Would this mount work on a sar cm9
From what i can see on the cm9, it is a similar style cut to the Novak. It seems...shallower than the cut i have. The only way to tell would be to buy the mount, shave it down until it fit properly. But that’s a crap shoot and you wouldnt want to waste money on a mount that may or may not fit your pistol. Unfortunately most firearm manufacturers don’t post the style of dovetail cut they give there pistols. Seems to be the case for the CM9 as they only say “adjustable rear sight” on their spec sheets.
@@MatSuPewPew907 thank you I'ma give it a try anyways
What’s the mag well?
The mag well is standard from RIA. It is flared somewhat, not quite as much as i would like, but it is still better suited for reloads compared to a standard capacity 1911.
@@MatSuPewPew907 thanks for the reply, beautiful gun.
Do they make suppressor height sights to go up that high?
Well unfortunately I am not aware of any irons that would be that tall. The only problem is that you would not have any rear iron sight to align with the front. You could mark the rmr dead center and use that as a point of aim with the front I suppose.
@@MatSuPewPew907 There are optics plates that come with the rear sight built-in.
Threaded barrel?
I am thinking about getting a threaded barrel. Out the box it does not come with one.
Do it, I was thinking about a rock island 1911 as my first gun and putting an excess of tactical shit on it
Nice video, but use Blue loctite and do a proper functions check.
I use Loctite on all of my builds. I don't show that process simply because I am assembling parts from behind a camera. I re-do the entire process once i am done filming to ensure that I have a proper install.
Where can I get on
Are you looking for the Trijicon mount? If so, several online retailers sell them, including Amazon. Just make sure you are getting a Trijicon mount and not some off brand knock off that wouldnt hold zero or crack under extreme use.
What are the specs on the RMR?
Type 2 1-MOA Dot

@@MatSuPewPew907 dont sweat it bro ~ i have an invisible penis growing out of my forehead it needs special training to see it .But trust me its there !
That’s the Novak Low Mount correct?
yes
@@MatSuPewPew907 oh awesome.
I have the RIA tactical with the 3.5 inch barrel and really wanted to try it out with a Holosun 507k to see if I liked the setup BEFORE having the slide milled up.
You should've had the slide milled for the holosun 507k because it would look like the sight is made for the gun instead of it looking like a hack job.
$324.00 for machine work and parts to put an optic on a Beretta 92X
That right! Do it right the firs time. It cost me that much to get my M&P milled, new cosight milled and refinished the slide.
Worth the wait
The RMR is more expensive than the rock island platform. lol
The RIA was $699 when I bought it and the RMR Type 2 was $480. Both pre-COVID pricing.
That RMR is mounted 10ft above the gun
Yeah the height over bore is similar to a frame mounted optic pic rail found on competition style race hand guns. It took me a few dozen draws from the holster to get my sight picture without any major adjustments. As much as i like some good slide milling, COVID turn around times are just a bit too long.
@@MatSuPewPew907 it's worth the wait to get it done right the first time. Instead of this halfazzed job
@@henrycruz45cal please show me any type of proof that milled is better than a mount... please show me how like 80-90% of pistols use a direct mount vs having mounting plate system... cuz I know glock, m&p, fn, sig, sti, cz, Springfield all do... and that's just to name a few

Nice job, but it sits too high.
I thought the same thing, but after shooting with the pistol for some time, I don't dislike it any more.
