  • Sky News host Chris Kenny says it is “hard to believe” Jim Chalmers is the Treasurer after his speech about nuclear energy today.
Mr Chalmers slammed the proposal of nuclear into Australia’s energy grid - labelling it the “dumbest policy ever put forward by a major political party”.
“That may have been the dumbest little summary of our energy debate that I have ever heard,” Mr Kenny said.
“He could have been actually describing his own government’s plans to replace our fossil fuel energy system with renewables.”

key mistake is thinking that the transformation is a 10 year problem. Its a 20-30-50+ year programme to get to net-zero. Even then the replacement of materials from hydrocarbons must be addressed, together with steel, cement & aluminum manufacture. The renewable life cycle is typically 20 years, so nuclear can be second wave to replace gas too. Unavoidable as wind/solar cannot supply 24/7 power requirements, and batteries are not practical at the huge scale required. Finally there is no integrated planning across Eastern States Governments, power Companies and Federal Government.

1 kg of renewables runs a washing machine for less than 1 hour. Available only when the wind is blowing and the sun is shinning. Nominally 30% of the time in Australia.
1 kg of Uranium runs a washing machine for 2000 years. Available 24/7. WARNING - The washing machine may not last 2000 years.
I wonder which energy source makes sense.

What politicians have invested in solar and wind farms, this is the true area of contention. I want a royal commission regarding this as it is a conflict of interest

The idiot treasurer forgets to tell you that Nuclear last up 70 years while Renewables are done after 15 years!
The other argument is the transmission lines are all ready to go for Nuclear!

$8.5 Billion a nuke plant (CSIRO costing). or $1.5 TRILLION for the ALPs net zero plan to the end of the decade, a further $8 Trillion out to 2060 (Uni Melb, Uni Qld and Princeton costing).
$1.5 Trillion will get you 176 nuke plants, that run 24/7.
We need less than 10 nuke plants
