Bong Joon Ho and Lee Isaac Chung Talk ‘Minari,’ Family and Working With Steven Yeun

- Last year, Bong Joon Ho made history and won four Academy Awards with his film “Parasite,” detailing a down-on-their-luck Korean family ingratiating themselves into the lives of a wealthy household. Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” describes a different family; based on Chung’s childhood experiences, the film casts Steven Yeun and Yeri Han as Korean immigrants in the 1980s who move to Arkansas to start a new life as farmers. Alan Kim plays their son, David, who balks when his grandmother (a scene-stealing Yuh-jung Youn) comes to live with them.
The two filmmakers discussed creating on-screen families, telling personal stories and their work with Yeun as a part of Variety’s inaugural FYC Fest.

idk why i find it so satisfying to hear both of them choosing different languages to speak that are more comfortable for them throughout this interview but also, understanding each other perfectly :")
What's also interesting is one is doing it from a Korean American standpoint and the other from a Korean who had studied English. They came from opposite spectrums of the language and met in the middle but with a different perspective in language despite both having a culture in common.
I loved that so much! And I also thought it was cool when they'd switch to their second-best language based on which language they thought could express their thoughts best at the moment, like when Bong Joon-ho was talking about Youn Yuh-jung, he switched to English.
You would see director Bong do that a lot in Parasite press especially when he was with Choi Woo-shik. People who speak more than one language will code-switch a lot and I just think it's super cool to watch it happen
me(korean)and my cousin(asian-american) used to do that! I only used korean and my cousin only used english but yet we understand each other perfectly
For me it feels very homey-as me and my family switch between Korean and English a lot (tho, I mostly just speak English). I really like, too!
It's common in many households where the parents are immigrants and the kids are Americanized. I understand more Cantonese speech than speaking it. If I attempt to speak Cantonese, I sound and feel like a four-year-old.
Bong Joon Ho should moderate more Q&A’s, his questions/comments are so insightful
I think it's Bong Joon-ho's style. He is very analytic, insightful and a little talkative by nature.
Yes , but he needs an interpreter!
Does Lee Isaac even understand everything that Bong joon ho is saying in Korean?? Why didnt they have an interpreter???
Lee Isaac isn't even fluent in Korean!!! Roflol.
@@JJ-yu6og korean is actually quite instinctual. a lot of non-english languages are like that. from the tone and certain vocabulary, you kinda get what the other person is saying. also there might've been an off-screen interpreter! maybe through a live stream text box or something. the interview went smooth enough
@@aisha02a yeah. i'm korean-am and not fluent in korean at all, but i got the gist of what bong joon ho was saying most of the time (though, not everything).
@@JJ-yu6og also, a lot of korean american kids can understand everything their parents say, but cannot speak a word of Korean.
This video doesn’t feel like a typical Q&A put out by a mainstream entertainment news source like _Variety_ - it feels like we’re listening in on an informal Zoom call between two directors who are both deeply engaged in their art of film-making, which maybe it is. Thanks to both Bong Joon Ho and Lee Isaac Chung for giving us the opportunity to hear this conversation.
It's two people who both work in the same occupation, so they "talk shop" using the same work terminology and jargon as shorthand. There's no need to do any extra explanation that has to be done when talking with a lay person. You get this same situation when you have actors interviewing actors.
@@RaymondHng I think there's a certain (large) set of us who like these videos for precisely this reason; they go straight into insightful questions that explore the craft with so much appreciation for each other. Some of us don't even work in film but love&appreciate the art so much. I find these so much more rewarding to watch than talk-show interviews and actively seek them out on yt.
Meet the son of 'Parasite' Director Bong Joon-ho, Korea’s upcoming filmmaker Hyomin 🎬 Check out his first video interview!!!📢

Bong Joon Ho speaking in korean and sprinkling english words and Lee Issac Chung speaking in English but korean when he can feels like me talking to relatives I don't normally talk too
Hello and may the peace of Allah be with you always. I am Hamdan from the UAE and I’d love to get to know you.
Bong Joon Ho really loves movies, contemporary movies. He talks about them with great enthusiasm and that makes me so happy. Some directors pine for some "great age of movies" but not him he respects the past while enjoying the present.
As a Korean American and an aspiring filmmaker,
THIS.
Im so proud of em and i cant wait go see minari.. Im busy atm .. Im not even korean but im so proud
I really appreciate these interviews; the directors/actors/etc. always ask each other very pointed, provocative and meaningful questions while remaining immensely respectful of each other's craft. It's a breath of fresh air from the typical press junket interviews that repeat the same banal questions that also often border on irrelevancy to the actual film.
👌🏻👌🏻
BJH is a master, one single sentence explain the interesting angle of this film "it doesn't wallow in nostalgia" wow.
I loved his saying that "if you get over the 1inch barrier on the screen, there are so many more amazing films to discover." I believe this probably had a great effect on the judges criteria and mentality. And this fact is SO true. Some of my best films and lasting impacts were foreign films.
"Directors care about story, of course, but always want to capture water." Such a great quote.
Even though I'm not Korean, this feels like conversations that happen all the time in Latin households. One person speaking Spanish and another speaking English and everyone understanding eachother.
Bong Joon Ho might be THE coolest person alive at the moment
Yeah, I would've gone into acting if all the directors were like him
i'm so glad bong joon ho brought up the scene where yuh jung has a fly while she's having a stroke, it was such a small detail that could go unnoticed, but that truly makes the scene much more impactful
Just look at Bong's shelves. That guy is a gem. 💎
Here in my garage
He has over 5k dvds!!
Absolutely satisfying interview, understated and so insightful. Pro to pro, 2 creatives exchanging precious notes on their work processes. I was also struck by the code switching back and forth between English and Korean, as Bong and Chung expressed themselves in the language they respectively felt most at home with. Chung is such a modest guy, but you could feel the mutual respect and appreciation. Between the economy of 25 days of shooting for Minari and Chloe Zhao’s naturalistic approach on Nomadland, one feels that Asian artists are beginning to find a self-assured voice and place in Americana.
The west is becoming less and less ignorant about Asian filmmaking in general, which is nice. After all, movies like The Departed and Black Swan would not exist without their Asian counterparts.
This made me teary. Asian creativity stems from deep and profound history and cultural heritage. This is shaping the cinema and filmmaking of our time. I’m incredibly proud as an Asian immigrant, and encouraged because I would also like to pursue filmmaking. I and my generation and generations after us are incredibly blessed to have directors such as these two and Chloe Zhao to look up to. ♥️
Listening to these wise, mature, and good people make me feel as if this is healing me.
I feel like Guillermo del Toro and Bong Jun Ho are the most eloquent directors. I noticed how Bong really liked the distance and lack of sentimentality, which mirrors his own ethos/modus operandi. I was so happy to hear Bong's detailed praise for my girl Han Yeri!
I underestimated Lee Isaac Chung's fluency in Korean bc he has an accent and can't speak Korean well, but he understands everything!
Anyways, I spoiled this movie for myself 🤦🏻♀️ but can't wait to watch when the price drops from $20 or hopefully in theaters!
Part of the difficulty speaking Korean, as an American for me, is the difference in sentence structure. Placement of nouns, verbs, participles, etc. also the Honorifics are not ingrained due to lack of verbal practice and exposure.
@@user-gp9zm3fl8u can I respectfully ask a question. I think the actress who played Monica was absolutely superb and if it were up to me she would not only be nominated for best actress at the academy awards she would win it! Here’s my question....what is the actress’ given name and which is her family name? Round about 4.44 Bong refers to her as Han Yeri but the subtitle is Yeri Han. In many online articles the name changes from Yeri Han and Han Yeri. Is there a written convention to a Korean name that is different to the spoken convention?I am interested to understand this properly. Many thanks in advance. 😁
@@Nicefro1976 family name: Han
Given name: Yeri
Koreans put the family name name first. Traditionally, the given name, 2 syllables, is part generational (siblings) and the individual identifier. Those can be in either 2nd or 3rd syllable; usually depends on what the fortune teller recommends. Now, I think it’s whatever the parents choose.
@@user-gp9zm3fl8u Wonderful. Thank you so much for replying. 🙏
Listening to this sincere dialogue between Bong, Joon Ho and Lee Isaac Chung was time well spent. I felt something in my heart.
Hello and may the peace of Allah be with you always. I am Hamdan from the UAE and I’d love to get to know you.
Hearing true students of film like Bong Joon Ho and Guillermo Del Toro talk about film is so captivating. Obviously anyone who has strong visual sense is so studied, but the way they are able to express universally how profoundly they view cinema is just so cool.
두 걸출한 영화감독의 경험과 통찰력이 만나는 시간...작은 디테일을 놓치지 않고 감사해할 줄아는 겸허함...참 인간적이고 아름다운 인터뷰 고맙습니다...
I could listen to these two all day long. Their humanity, generosity and love for their art truly warms my heart. I absolutely loved Parasite, Okja and The Mother, among others. I can't wait to watch Minari.
2019 oscar best director and 2020 oscar best director nominee
Underrated conversation. Hope it blows up eventually.
I can't wait to watch 'Minari' soon.
It's going to be released on 3rd March in S.Korea!
I saw this movie before three months through torrent. From India Tamil nadu.
Most intelligent and thoughtful conversation among two brilliant directors.
south Korea is killing it right now: films, movies, music, variety shows, fashion, technology, food just everything
Except foundry chips due to TSMC
Wow! I want to see more filmmakers fleshing out a movie like this! From a quote, a specific scene, an origin of an idea, to very tiny yet symbolic and impactful details! What a treat this interview is! Thank you, Variety! Maybe make this into an actual segment? :))
Steven Yeun really is a talented actor
I love how Mr. Bong dissects every scene and gives a fresh meaning to it, as he did when he mentioned the scene where a fly stayed on Yuh Jeong's face while she was having a stroke. He isn't called Mr. Bong Detail for nothing.
Koreans are incredibly artistic and creative.
It's such a treat to see Bong Joon Ho talk one-on-one with directors. I saw a special screening of Memoirs of Murder with a special interview with Edgar Wright and it was just them fawning over each other's movies. He makes these conversations so genuine and casual at the same time.
A year later! Bong Joon Ho still fells down to earth and nervous. Even after his big win @ the Oscars.
34:04 Your DP is literally super fucking professional HAHA dead.
What an incredible conversation. 39 mins 16 secs of quality
I love this genuine conversation between directors, but I had to stop when Lee brought up the ending of Mother, because I haven't finished watching it yet 😅
This was so brilliant and so insightful . I’m Definitely going to rewatch Minari after listening to the things Bong Joon Ho observed and Chung’s responses. It’s a whole to level of awareness that will add to the enjoyment and appreciation of this awesome film.
So grateful for this upload - I feel like I would've had to buy tickets to see such a provoking interview like this.
Being Korean-American, Minari as well as this interview of Korean and English is so comforting to listen to. Incredible people!
Both of Bong Joon Ho and Lee Isaac Chung are the genius directors ! We proud of them a lot!1
Absolutely stoked to be learning not only about both of these directors though this conversation, but even other collaborators, friends, and inspirations including Claude Wilkinson, the poet behind one of the lines in the snake scene. I love credit where credit is due and hearing about these varying places of growth and connection!!! Going to check out his poetry now.
I can't wait to watch "Minari." I'm a fan of Steven Yeum since his days in TWD and have followed his career since he left.
He was thrilled about the flies lmao
이런 양질의 인터뷰 넘모 좋은것 :D bb
Phenomenal interview. Incredibly insightful commentary and the exchange itself is so heart-warming.
WOW this was so good. Love the amazing questions they asked each other and the insightful discussions that came out of it. They both have such a gift with film making and words.
Hello and may the peace of Allah be with you always. I am Hamdan from the UAE and I’d love to get to know you.
Such a great, respectful and insightful conversation between amazing directors!
i love listening to both of them interact with each other! having two directors talk to eachother really offers insight that i wouldn't have gotten otherwise
Most insightful and thoughtful conversation. Can’t wait to watch ‘Minari’
I like not only the way Bong pointed out but also described things 👏🏻👏🏻 his attitude 👍🏻
OMG I’ve been waiting for this interview for a long time! Thanks for uploading.
I’m just so into the way how they talk to each other. One used English, one used korean; but they still had a perfect understanding of the mind of the other-side. Amazing
Super great interview! So excited to see Minari and whatever both of these filmmakers have in store.
I could watch them talk for hours.
Imagine a round table with Alfonso Cuaron added!
It feels like Bong Joon-Ho is a huge fan of Minari and didn't wanna waste this opportunity to ask all about the film.
Wow what a great interview and discussion
As expected, this was such an incredible q&a/session. This vid is a MUST as an addendum to this brilliant film!!!
Two incredibly talented and classy guys just having a conversation. Great interview.
I am totally agree with you.
Both are totally gentlmen.
Everybody loves Mr.Bong himself as well as his films and Ms.Youn said that she joined Minari because she just likes Mr.Lee Issac Chung.
It is very rare to hear the compliments about director from Mr.Youn.
Facinating and insightful Q&A. Theres nothing quite like listening to two outstanding artists talk about their work
What a wonderful interview from these two wonderful directors ! Keep me making to go back to Minari to repeat watching this beautiful film. Hope Minari win many more Oscars this year too like the Parasite last year.
If other person(MC) interview them , there would be normal boring questions but two directirs talk QA each other. the interview became more pointable and deepful meaning!! great talk thank you
What an interview! Also, I really hope Bong Joon Ho has an entire shelf dedicated to Happy Madison movies.
It's about time. Thank you Variety.
Love this interview😍 very sophisticated and high quality contents!
Bravo!!!! What a wonderful interview between two great directors’ perspectives with the focus on all the details, so refreshing. ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing. I missed so many of these details when I watched the film.
this film is one of the best really. The casting was superb, especially Steven and YJ. Allan Kim showed depth no young actor in recent years have shown, and Han Yeri, who i clearly believed was the heart of this film, should have gotten a nod too (that last scene with Steven at the side alley of a store was deeply moving, and only an Actress with her caliber can deliver). I'm thinking, is the water in South Korea reallly that diffrent? How is this country producing these great acts? Like seriously? BTS? Bong Joon Ho? Now the cast of Minari? (arghhh). Director Bong was right in saying that Steven will get a nod (that's a true visionary)
I think you’re right. South Korea is a special place. Visit and you’ll feel it. I feel it every time I go and when I’m not there, I dream of it.
I wish there weren't any Trial of Chicago, Nomadland this year and Minari could win The Best Picture. It's so good and so much deserving of this award
Wow this is amazing. So beautiful to see two together talking about the movies. Lovely!
Love these two guys❤️ It’d be a pleasure to work as an actor with them
Will Patton also should've been nominated for Minari film, he's way too underrated, he's debuted in 1979 and did 109 works. Director Bong, please cast him seriously!
That fly segment is epic in this conversation! nice to c Bong speaking in English.
This is such a great conversation.
We thank that we had bjh to do the interview. This interview was so satisfying and insighful.
Thank you. Amazing storylines, cast , everything else.
i like how they are tossing the questions back and forth so you can compare and see how these two directors put together their respective film.
Please do more of this! Directors interviewing each other !
Loved this insightful conversation. Thank you.
Beautiful conversation
thank you for this
Gotta save this video to watch for later again ❤️❤️❤️ Learning a lot. Bong Joon Ho watched the movie very detailed. Wow
LOVED this, and it's also how I speak to my parents, I speak in English and they reply in Korean
I enjoyed this interview a lot ! I love it..Congratulations for award winning for Best Motion Picture, foreign Language, at the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards. ! Our Director Isaac Jung and Stephen Yuh Jung Youn, Yeri Han, Alan Kim, Noel Cho and all other members in the movie and staff!
Hello and may the peace of Allah be with you always. I am Hamdan from the UAE and I’d love to get to know you.
@@sheikhfazaa3816 Thank you for your comments! I made my video regarding this movie and I mentioned about this interview in my video, too..

I didn't think I'd watch the whole 39 minutes but I did and I actually enjoyed it! I should probably watch both Parasite and Minari though 🤦🏻♀️😂😂🙈
I just looked at Isaac's wiki and bruh his Korean is so good for someone who's never lived in Korea. I had to check his wiki because it was so good!
han yeri was amazing
2 great directors who both made movies that remind me of The Grapes of Wrath
I would love to hear more of Bong Joon Hos thoughts on the last black man in san francisco, one of my favorite movies. I would like to hear him speak more in depth about any movie tho
21:50 To me, that's cinema -Bong Joonho
There it is!
Amazing discussion!!
they’re so genius
“Dislikes”????? Não dá para entender! Temos gratuitamente uma aula sobre estas duas magníficas produções e se conhece o pensamento e as ideias criativas destes dois talentosos diretores e em geral sobre cinema, não só coreano mas universal...
This is such a great gift.
Listening and talking in both languages are so cool! Directors have quite different views of a scene, narrative, ending, etc.
Love this vid.
I'm so looking forward to watching 'Minari'. 😀👍
Hello and may the peace of Allah be with you always. I am Hamdan from the UAE and I’d love to get to know you.
I love watching great minds converse.
I wish they'd put subtitles for both Korean and English (as in, not removing subs when English is spoken). As a non-native speaker, I am more at ease when i can listen to Isaac's talk and read the subtitles.
just judging by Bong Joon Ho's questions and line of thinking.. I can tell he his a bonafide film genius on the levels of Coppola, Tarantino and Kubrick.
I loved this.
Spoiler alert, don't watch beyond 13:00
Ohh..i almost did exactly what you warned us about 😅 thought the specific time stamp refers to some interesting part of their convo, before pausing completely after reading your comment through.
Thanks.
Thank you for the heads up!
