Stay was originally recorded by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs in 1960. Jackson Browne wrote "The Load Out" and paired it with a slightly adapted "Stay" for his live show.
I thought it was funny that on the album cover they had "and the Zodiacs don't mind'

I saw this tour in Mobile Alabama. Hard to believe it's been almost 50 years ago. I was a newlywed and this was the first concert my husband and I went to together. We drove from Pensacola Fl to Mobile through a blinding storm, it was so worth it. The entire concert was amazing. When they got to the Load out and Stay, it was still storming outside, and I really didn't want it to be over. I was with the love of my life having the time of my life. One of my most cherished memories. I still have the Tshirt and the husband.
I still have the tickets to that concert. I wasn’t able to go at the last minute and I kept the tickets. I always regretted missing that show.

Jackson Browne is one of the most humble Rock stars. He has an awesome relationship with most of Southern California's most famous soft Rock personalities. He lived in a house with Don Henley and Glenn Frye living in the basement, who said he taught them how to write songs. Linda Rondstat, David Crosby,Graham Nash,and Steven Still are all friends with Jackson Browne.

The late great song writer Hoyt Axton was known to crash there as well. Hoyt was trying to write "boney fingers" and someone yelled if you don't finish that song you will end up with "boney fingers"

Actually, Glenn Frye lived in the same apartment building. It's unclear if it was actually the 'basement' or just an apartment underneath Jackson's. Don Henley lived in Kenny Roger's music house. It was a kind of shelter that Kenny had to help out wayward musicians who made their way to California in hopes of stardom.

Jackson Browne has a voice that's an irresistible combination of vulnerable, melancholy, tragic, honest, and hopeful. A good example is "These Days", which is an incredible song, especially considering he wrote it when he was 16 yrs old.

You know, I haven't seen that movie yet. But the song "Stay" is an old song, but Jackson Browne reworked the lyrics to line up with what he was singing in (the Load Out)... i.e. he wants to stay and play longer (if the union don't mind, etc). The other vocalists were Rosemary Butler and David Lindley. Lindley was playing the lap steel (the thing that.looked like a small guitar but works like a pedal steel). Both vocalists nailed it. Sadly, we lost David Lindley early last year.

Laid back sophistication is how I describe Jackson Browne... He makes it so smooth and effortless but you know that its a genuinely super well crafted song.
Jackson and Don Henley were roommates when they we’re trying to make it…Don says that Jackson would pound on the piano Allllllll day long and from that we have the Eagles and Jackson Browne two of the most iconic musicians of my life time and I’m so thankful !!
They were not roommates. It was Glenn Frey who lived in the same apartment complex as Jackson Browne, who knew him first, but they were not roommates either.
Jackson Browne was (and is) one of the best singer/songwriters to come out of the west coast in the late '60s and '70s. He was associated with the Eagles early on, co-writing a couple of their early hits and then went on to record some great stuff of his own through the '70s and '80s, He was one of those artists in the "We Are the World" chorus in 1985.
My father said a lot of times, the crew would actually come out and start dismantling the stage while he was playing this. Magical.
Jackson, without doubt, is one of America’s greatest songwriters. He once commented that he was never one to write “cheery” songs. He paints true life pictures that are honest, introspective with a bit of melancholy mixed in. His pop hits from the 60’s and 70’s like Running on Empty, Doctor My Eyes, The Pretender, etc are mainstays of 70’s rock, however, if you dig deep you will find heartfelt poetic treasures in songs like, Late for the Sky, For A Dancer, After the Deluge, Birds of St Marks, etc. I sometimes wish I had never heard these songs so I could enjoy them again for the first time.

A live take of both songs was used on the studio album, Running on Empty. The whole album was recorded either on stage, backstage, on the tour bus or in other locations on the tour, and many of the songs dealt with touring.

My sister won tickets and a backstage pass to see Jackson several years ago. She said he was one of the nicest and humblest people she had ever met !
His songs are often wistful and reflective, somehow relatable even if you didn't share the literal experience he's singing about. He can draw you in like that. The Pretender is a gem.
Jackson Browne is a master songwriter, up there with James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Yong etc... I've been lucky enough to see him live.. utterly wonderful.
This is a song about life on a concert tour. His homage to the roadies (stage crew) at the beginning recognizes those unknown folks who set up and strike the stage for the performances. Later he also acknowledges the drivers of the trucks and buses. Too many fans don’t realize the dozens of people it takes to tour a show. Kudos to JB for saluting those in the shadows. I managed a venue for 20 years, and yes, Jackson did perform there and do this song as an encore.
Not only did Jackson Browne write this song, he had written lots of hits for himself and others including Bruce Springsteen and The Eagles.
He only wrote the Load Out song. Stay was recorded by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs back in the early 60’s.

They guy singing the falsetto was master musician David Lindley, who played slide guitar, fiddle, acoustic, anything with strings. Listen to "Running on Empty", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "Doctor My Eyes", "Lawyers in Love", "The Pretender".
All of that and was one of the nicest and funniest people ever.
This man is one of THE most respected talents in the music industry. Not one person has a bad thing to say about him. Another amazing song by him is "The Pretender."
I think Daryl Hannah probably has a bad thing or two to say about him but other than that your point is well taken.
My husband has been a major lighting guy for decades. It is a complicated life, full of longing, happiness for the work and worry about all the “behind the scenes folks”. It’s a loose, wonderfully disfunctional family. He also had the pleasure of working for Jackson on the Blues Tour. He is a very generous and down to earth artist.
The origin of the line “before you come for this piano” comes from him playing for the roadies as they did their work.
RIP David Lindley, master of many strings! (especially his lap steel.)
The sadness feeling comes from hearing all the minor chords. That how music can set the mood.
Jackson Browne had hits of his own, and he also co-wrote "Take It Easy" for the Eagles. There's a few good songs from this era about the strange and lonely life of a touring musician, like "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger, "Faithfully" by Journey, and "We're An American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad.
Jackson Browne has so many great songs. Very personable. Still tours, Shows now in a more intimate setting.

Many , many moons ago, I took a summer job traveling with the Carnival. I was young and resilient, and the change did me a lot of good, getting me out of town for awhile, learning how to hustle and live on the road... This Jackson Browne song; " The Load Out." Was our anthem.
After returning home to a normal 9 to 5 job, I took a side job, as a Roadie, for a friend's band who was seeing a lot of success back then.
I honestly cannot tell you how much this song means to me. It felt like Jackson Browne was singing this song directly to me.
Now... So many years later, whenever I need inspiration, and don't feel like living with the aches and pains of getting old, everytime I hear that song it takes me back to those days with the Carnival, when I was in my early 20s.

Jackson is one of the great singer/songwriters, top; 10 IMO. He wrote songs with deep lyrics, just a magnificent artist. Any knowledge of 1970s music must include Jackson Browne. Although his career stretched well beyond the 70s (and he is still singing), this decade was his peak.
Rosemary Butler is the female vocalist. I saw Jackson Browne in the UK when he opened for Joni Mitchell in the very early 70s ❤ big fan ever since then.
The steel guitar in this video is a "lap steel". They are tuned to an open chord and played with a metal slide. The kind that you've seen on a stand are called "pedal steel guitars". They have foot and knee levers to change the chord type (major, minor, 7th, etc.).
A salute to the Road Warriors that make live concerts possible. It also tells the story of the performers on the road, and the the feelings they have.
That line, "on 8-tracks and cassettes in stereo" is how every TV or radio ad for new music ended.

For my money the greatest song ever written.
I was lucky enough to be a local roadie for a couple of big musicians Phil Collins and Brittney Spears. I did Phi's show first, and I was completely amazed at the process. There were about 7or 8 traveling roadies, and those guys were thoroughly professional. They knew where every piece of the set went, down to the pins in the rigging.
Every time I hear this performance, I imagine it being the last song of the concert and 100s or 1000s of people filing out of the arena singing "Stay just a little bit longer..."

Maurice Williams wrote it the early 1950s and recorded it with the Zodiacs in 1960 and was a #1 chart topper.
On the live version that was on the Runnin' On Empty album, there's a huge ovation when Maurice Williams himself comes onstage to sing the chorus (on this version it's taken by the female vocalist)

But this is before that. And it always got to me anyway. I'm so happy you decided to do this and it's so important to do the two of them back to back you know what I mean? I absolutely adore Jackson Browne. It’s been too long since I’ve played his music. This brought tears to my eyes. I miss this music so much.
Knowing what roadies go through for their respective artists, it made me happy to see what TS did for her truck drivers as well as her background singers and dancer on her latest tour. That explains why her people are so loyal.
Jackson Browne is an incredible artist and song writer. He's wrote/co-wrote songs for so many people from the late 60's going on for many years. (The Eagles, David Crosby, and more)
Wow you totally nailed it. I love this so much that I bought the single in high school, because I couldn't wait for it to come on the radio again and literally you would play the load out on site a and then we were so good or at least I was really good at vinyl back then and so you would right when I got to the end you would lift a needle up and then flip the 45 RPM single over with your left hand and immediately put the needle down not at the beginning of the leader but on the first group where the song started and you would simulate continuity.
My first "big boy" concert was this man, and this band, on the Running on Empty tour. I am 61 y/o now, and to this day, it is one of the most astounding events I have ever witnessed. They closed the show with this song. I wore my Saturate Before Using t-shirt slap out!

As a musician who spent some time touring , I agree the road crew is the back bone of the show. They make our jobs so much easier when all we have to do is show up and play , our energy is so much more.
I was a DJ back in the days before the "digital revolution". I loaded/unloaded multiple crates of vinyl albums/singles, in addition to amps, mixers and GIANT touring speakers. The Load Out/Stay was the song I played at the end of EVERY gig (wedding receptions, Christmas parties, class reunions, etc.). The song(s) were more popular then because Browne had a string of albums/singles in that era. People at the gatherings liked the song because they could start out slow-dancing and then switch to a faster rhythm at the end. I loved it because (as you so eloquently pointed out) the lyrics are dedicated to the roadies, the heroes behind the stars. Today, DJs can put everything they need for a gig in a small toolbox thanks to the advances in electronics and digital recordings. However, due to the elaborate stage setups at major concerts, the song is still relevant. Thanks for the reaction. Brought back a lot of memories!

I graduated High School in 1978. Jackson Brown was Big. I always thought this song is about longing. Longing for the show and longing to be home.

I loved hearing you use your own road experiences to connect with what the song is about.
The sadness? Yeah, I feel it too. Perhaps because of all the time it takes to travel, set up then dismantle a major traveling band and the only time that isn't enough is the time they are actually performing: also being separated from your love, your family would evoke feelings of sadness.
What a musician's dilema! To want to go out and play your music and make people happy but regretting the time away from the ones you love.

He wrote one of my favorite songs “Doctor my Eyes” when he was 16. Complex lyrics, great storytelling, and great showcasing of all the band members in this song make it a fan favorite. RIP to David Linley the very gifted steel guitar player. The movie about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that you’re thinking of was Jersey Boys, where you first heard “Stay”. The song was written by Maurice Williams and recorded by him and his group the Zodiacs in 1960 originally, but also by The Four Seasons, Buddy Holly and Jackson Browne.

One of my favorite concert memories is Jackson Browne at Ravinia just north of Chicago in the 70's. It was unseasonably cold that night, but the lawn was packed, my gf kept me warm and the music was great. So much fun.
We knew how to make great songs in the 70's! I am soooo glad to have been a teen back then. This was a huge hit my senior year in HS. What a song!

David Lindley is the Artist playing the Lap Steel Guitar and singing the falsetto part. He’s from the Inland Empire Region of Southern California and sadly recently passed away. He could play ANYTHING with Strings.

JB is truly one of the greatest singer/songwriters in musical history! This is a small sample. There is 'For A Dancer', 'The Pretender', 'Before The Deluge', 'Fountain Of Sorrow', 'Looking Into You' 'These Days' and so many, many more. He's still out there doing it! I moved recently, and ran across my cassette tape cases from the 70, and 80's, and this is one of them. I still remember a certain place, amd time it was playing.
I have felt the way he feels leaving places.
The wife and I seen him a few years ago in a winery outside of Seattle. We kept waiting for him to sing this song in an encore. The wife is a pretty good singer and got a lot of people singing it and he still didn't come out. We were all singing it on the way out. Was bummed he didn't sing it, but it was cool having everyone singing on the way out.

I think melancholy is a good word for this. Jackson Browne and James Taylor toured together for a while- it's an amazing concert. Browne has a great voice for storytelling, and this is such a poignant song. I get that it's an easy topic for a musician, but I like the window into their life. I can see where touring, or the music industry in general could be a grind that crushes your soul, even though it's the thing you love doing more than anything. Bob Seger "Turn the Page" is a song in this vein you might check out. Aaron Lewis's "Country Boy" is another - he was the lead singer of Staind, then went in a TOTALLY different direction. That Temptations movie is awesome, and you are correct.
