    I know this video seems really obvious but a lot of players start out trying to hit the ball way to hard. To start learning the proper technique for all of your strokes check out these tutorials on our website: www.pingskills.com/tutorials/basic-strokes
    Good luck with your table tennis journey.
    Cheers,

    This is brilliant!!! It never occurred to me to hit the ball ON THE TABLE!!!! I'm always aiming for the ceiling directly above me!!! I don't win very often unless I'm playing someone who uses lots and lots and lots of backspin for some reason. But I am a little confused. In every professional ping-pong match I've ever watched, I seem to recall that in pretty much every point, one of the professionals chooses not to hit the ball on the table. Seriously!! Almost every point!! If they're so good, why do they do this? Have they simply not seen this incredibly insightful video?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 5 lety +13

      haha, I'm glad we could help you :) Maybe we need to show this to Ma Long so he can win a few more matches! I know it seems obvious but we often see players trying to hit the ball way to hard before they have developed any control and they never develop the consistency to become a good player.

    • @gasdoc4789
      @gasdoc4789 Před 5 lety +17

      haha indeed! Ma will certainly be taken aback by this critical and counter-intuitive advice!! But not as taken aback as I am by your quick response and good humor. You certainly have better things to do than deal with someone like me!! My only criticism of your response is not taking a cheap shot at me!
      Of course I understood the point you were making and it is an excellent one. In every sport, mastery of the fundamentals is essential. But I couldn't resist responding as I did when you said to hit the ball on the table. I laughed aloud for the irony of good advice sounding so ridiculous. It's akin to something like "Keep your eye on the ball" in baseball, which doesn't happen to sound inherently ridiculous, but if you think about it one could easily respond "Oh thank you so much!! I always just stare at my left knee until I hear the umpire say 'strike three, batter's out' "
      I just couldn't resist writing what I did. I hope you truly enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it, among the few things I've written which I believe to be funny.
      And for the record, I am among your very happy subscribers. I only wish I had found your videos sooner.

    Hi Noah Major,
    What bat are you using at the moment? To generate spin you need a decent bat (watch our how to choose a bat video for more information). If you've got a decent bat then you need to ensure you get a fast brushing contact. You can even practice this away from the table. Try to hit the ball onto the floor with backspin and get it to spin back towards yourself.

    How much does a ball and table effect spin? I have a great bat but use a friends dinner table and extremely cheap balls. When i try generating spin either there is no effect at all or the spin is not significant enough to effect the play. Does it just come down to my skill? I'm fairly new, but I was just wondering thanks!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 7 lety

      The ball can have some impact. If it is very shiny it will grip less in the rubber. You should still be able to get quite a bit of spin with a good rubber and a fast brushing contact.

    How to convince my seniors players to practice those basics ? As soon they arrive at the club
    they want to play/count the points ...i told them little progress can be done by just challenging
    one to another ...they brag me saying : here comes the professor sarcasticly...hard to argue with a group of people thinking > ...keep your advices for you.
    One day i will bring my pc to show them your knowledge ...

      This can be a tricky situation. If they like the competition side of things then you can try and turn the practice drills into a competition. Maybe you can see which pair of players can hit the most balls on the table in a row as an example.

      +Rudra Prasadh Ganesh I think there were a lot in that video. I guess you mean the one that spins back over the net? The key is to get a lot of backspin by getting a fine brushing contact on the ball. You do need good rubbers on your bat to generate that much spin though.

    RiPpEdMaMa you'll find it difficult playing forehand against backspins also though your shots may have better power in them because for your grip, they will lack spin

      Yes they are good rubbers. Remember that the rubbers you like are not what everyone else will like. Some people like slower rubbers and some people like faster rubbers.

    In my opinion the most important skill in table rennis is to keep calm. I am 17 years old and I play against 50 years old who play table tennis for 30 years. I am a very quick player and my mates (the 50 years old) more play with spin and calm. So the spin and I want to play quick I fail.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 7 lety

      Good point. Staying calm is important.

    • @apglasses
      @apglasses Před 7 lety

      not to be critical or too awfully much of a dick, but saying hitting the ball on the table is the most important "skill", i'd say should be more considered the most important objective. that's like saying, kicking the ball in to the goal for soccer (football) is the most important skill in that sport.
      i agree with you both that staying calm is important but i'll play devil's advocate again and mention that yes while you do want to remain calm, it's more like staying fluid because there are times when you need to be amped up to make those impossible shots that make the game so friggin amazing. like bruce lee used to say, "be water"

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 7 lety

      Don't take this video too literally. The point here is that you need to learn control so you can keep the ball on the table. Too many people try to get too fancy too quickly. By being able to keep the ball on the table you'll get more practice, have more fun, and then be able to focus more on improving other important skills.

    What is the rule for the table tennis. If the ball drops twice in net and falls to opponents table.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  Před 5 lety

      On the serve if the ball is otherwise a legal serve but touches the net on the way over, then it is a let and the point is replayed. If the ball touches the net during a rally then play continues.
