Sicily. Messina district, between Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains, the Argimusco plateau broadens at an altitude of 1200 meters. One of the most spectacular site in Sicily with a 360 degrees view all around. Southward is the majestic of Etna, on the other side there is the Tyrrhenian Sea with the seven Aeolian Islands. In a clean day landscapes are breathtaking.
But the Argimusco plateau offers much more. An huge forest for instance, the “Bosco di Malabotta”, a perfect destination for trekking lovers, and, mostly, the “Argimusco rocks”, a wide open area with several stone Megaliths towering over the countryside. Although they are only large monolithic quartz sandstones produced by rain and wind erosion, some of these are similar to dolmens so the site has been nicknamed the “Sicilian Stonehenge”.
Several legends arose around these menhirs due to their anthropomorphic or zoomorphic aspect. Some of them got a name: The Mammoth, The Giant, The Eagle, Praying Woman, etc. The first two, just few meters after the entrance gate, have been considered as Male and Female symbols of fertility. Maybe in the past this was a sacred place used for some ritual or religious services even if this is not definitively proven. Anyway, the aura of mystery remains, giving to this location a special witchery.
To get to the Argimusco upland, I suggest to start from Montalbano Elicona, a very nice town ideal as a base to explore the surroundings. Take the District road number 110 south direction, following the touristic signs; leave it on the left for the road number 115, east direction, and after few kilometers you’ll reach the target. There is a sort of ajar gate to pass, then follow the easy trail up on the hills, walking between caws and horses pacifically browsing in an idyllic countryside. Fern fields are almost everywhere around you.
This is something completely different from what you probably imagine thinking to Sicily. Far from all the crowded main touristic attractions, you will discover another soul of the island, one among the others, that will surprise you. Guaranteed!
Footage shot with a Canon Legria and a Mavic Air drone. Post-production and editing with Cyberlink PowerDirector suite 5. Gps map is obtained through a Suunto Traverse watch and the Movescount App.
The track “Together we Stand“ is by Scott Holmes, an excellent music author, and is licensed by Free Music Archive.
