Is the Mac Pro 1,1 Still Usable in 2023?

  • Today, I revisited an old topic that I haven't touched in 4 years, my dad's 2006 Mac Pro. It's amazing how this machine is 17 years old... Oh, and by the way, this is the same machine from my old video.

currently watching from the same Mac pro 1,1 which i still daily drive. mine is fully upgraded, has Xeon 5365, AMD RX 580 8gb, 32gb ram and a sata 3 pcie card adapter for full speed SSD. I tried el capitan, lion, and windows 11. windows 10 seems to be the best.
Somehow this antique can smoothly run FL Studio (i make music), I'm able to play GTA V at 30-45fps, and geekbench 6 multi core score averages 1500 points. ironically, performance is slightly worse on windows 11 compared to 10 thanks to bootcamp drivers not installing properly. still holds up in 2024, time will tell when it's 2025 and Microsoft drops support for win 10

Did you have to do anything for your AMD RX 580 to work? Or did the AMD RX 580 just plugged right in without any issues? Which sata 3 pcie card adapter you have?

The original old gpu card you have in this was a good match for that machine... which you inadvertantly demonstrated. The main problem I had with this machine was that 'brew' is not maintaining their repos properly. Thus, I had to revert to macports and re-get all the command-line software I use. These machines are great for batch processing of images and videos. I still use mine for that coz they seem really fast at it... faster than my 2015 MacBook Pro.
I have a modern desktop machine with a modern GPU in it that I use. It should be said that altho' Win11 is better than before, it's a lot easier to use the old Mac UI with remote desktop software to access Linux+Windows. In particular, copy+paste works better on Windows when it's hosted from a Mac through Remote Desktop, which is kind of hilarious!

I have a 2,1 version of this machine and it is a great computer and I would love to use it more! Only thing is, it uses enough electricity to run a small city! Too bad but this is the biggest drawback to these units. My electricity meter jumps up to warp speed when I turn it on. Cheers

Seeing as how the Mac 3.1 is the same price as a 1.1 almost, it makes much more sense to go with the 3.1. the 1st gen PCIE slots really limit the capabilities. as well as the 32 bit firmware issue. Still very cool to see this old beast run, and if I had one, I'd do what i could to keep it running!

Last October, I made a video on my 2009 Mac Pro, and I basically said that it wasn't a good buy. I was also flocked by old Mac Pro users who told me how great the machine was, and how I should spend hundreds of dollars on GPU's, SSD's, etc, and how its much better than Apple Silicon, but I personally don't see how buying a 10+ year old workstation is the best idea in 2023 (or, back then, 2022) but your video is great and I really enjoyed it, hopefully you can start to build your community with this video.

if youre building a custom PC, and you want it to run mac OS without the bullshit that comes with a hackintosh, theres not a better option than a 2008-2012 mac pro. you can also run windows on it using boot camp. If you just want a new computer out of the box and have it work flawlessly and be supported, go with something new and pre built.

imo it's good if you already have one or can get one for cheap/free. I wouldn't buy one of these for over 50 bucks in their stock configuration.

I put a $5 NVME card in mine and it works with two NVME just fine on the PCI bus. I have a 4tb drive in one of the bays also seems to be fine. I have heard you can bput 20tb drives in the bay but haven't tried.... in any case you can fit a lot of hard drive+NVMC in 1.1 Mac Pro!

I have both a 1,1 (flashed to 2,1) and a 5,1 Mac Pro. For a while, I used the 5,1 as my primary system and experimented with the 2006 Pro.
During that time, I upgraded it to the maximum dual CPUs (x5365) and put in a WX5100 workstation card. I followed that up with adding modern Linux to the machine as, at the time, Proton was just starting to get much better (I believe I ran Elementary for most of the time, finding a patched version for 32 bit EFI Macs).
I pushed that old beast, and since I ran cRPGs, I didn't really mind it being old. Steam was easily accessible since the Linux was a new build, and the WX5100 did an admirable job - though I suspect I really, really pushed that card a bit - it just gave up life when I transplanted it into another machine.
Thanks for revisiting this old warhorse.
Edit: I'm not sure about Windows, but having the patched Elementary installer, I was able to take advantage of it being a 64 bit machine.

Good video thanks for sharing. I have a 1,1 flash to 2,1 thanks to hrutkay mod videos. Is there any other game emulators that’s compatible with El Capitan ? Going to check out the emulator you mentioned in this video.

The video I want to see is the one where someone puts larger+larger hard drives in the bays of a Mac Pro 1,1, then a 3,1. That would be pretty cool to see. Can you get 100tb of storage in a Mac Pro 1,1? If you can, you've got a breakthru video.

Hey. Anyone know? ... I was thinking about putting some Ironwolf 4-20tb drives in my Mac Pro 1,1, either running Linux or Yoseemitee. Yeah I still use my $20 Mac Pro 1,1 after 8 years of use. Any idea if those bigger drives will work either under Linux or Yosemite? Same question with G5... I have a $10 G5 Tower hehe.
