Building a Desolate Rocky Planet Diorama | A New Mineral is Found!

- Welcome back my fellow cosmic hobbyists! The last we saw of our intrepid crew of the Pathfinder, they were on their way to one of the planets identified as possibly harboring life. By utilizing the space warping drive system aboard the Pathfinder, the crew was able to arrive to the planet orbiting Proxima Centauri about 2 weeks after leaving earth. When they arrived, they found many good spots to send science probes down to the surface. One of them showed some unique electromagnetic signatures so it was decided this would be the spot the crew would land in a shuttle to explore the planet’s surface. There were four crew members that flew down in a shuttle, named the Roxy Bella. The crew found a unique mineral that when brought back to the pathfinder, was found to create a metal that was many times stronger than tungsten but just as light, and equally as brittle as titanium. The crew is calling this metal “unobtanium”. It is figured this metal will have many, many uses in the future.
Now that you know the story of the crew being on the planet’s surface, let me tell you about the construction of this diorama. I used materials in the construction like a wooden art board from Hobby Lobby, Pink XPS foam for the mountain base, Sculpt-a-mold, plaster rocks that were cast in Woodland Scenics molds, Vallejo paints for the base color and washes, 3d printed shuttle craft, astronauts, and space probe on my Anycubic photon printer, really small lava rocks and lots of imagination!
When this diorama was complete, you could almost imagine how desolate the planet is. There was once water on here but it dried up many hundreds of thousands of years ago. This gives lots of opportunity to explore the dried up surface!
Come along as I build this planet’s surface and imagine how excited these astronauts, and the crew of the pathfinder must be with finding this new mineral, and any new surprises that come along the way!

This was my first diorama, and I had a blast making it! What kinds of planets do you think these crews should discover when travelling around our galaxy?
It'd be really neat to see a diorama of them landing on an oblong asteroid to harvest ice for water!
@@zarmambi that sounds like a really cool idea 🙂 I will definitely put that on my list. Thank you Zarmambi!!
Old hard drive versatility is unmatched. There is always a reason to keep them around. Looking good! The unobtainium isn't going to obtain itself!
Heck yeah. Old hard drives for the win, lol. I hear the unobtanium can be unabtainable at times?!
I really love your approach to storytelling to go along with the build. Can’t wait for the next episode - we need to know what’s on the dark side of that moon 🌒
Thank you for the kind words!! I look forward to "sharing" what the mysterious signal is around that moon 😊.
Oh and also the soundtrack is stellar x
Thank you!!
Good build, good story, good video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Chuck Meriam!! I am glad you enjoyed it🙂 I truly look forward to sharing more.
So cool to see it come together and the story behind it. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you Erika! Super glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Love the little story to go along with the build.
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I appreciate your talent. Keep going 💗💗 That's great 🧡🧡
Thank you Diyfireking! I appreciate your kind words and thank you for watching the video 😊
Awesome build and story telling!
Thank you Geolog! I appreciate you watching 🙂
This is awesome!
Thank you 🙂
Love the build 😊
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂 Thank you for watching!!
@@CosmicQuestHobbies you are welcome 😎
Really nice, very interesting storyline.
Thank you!! I appreciate your kind words and thank you for watching🙂
Looks good!
Thank you!! This is my first actual diorama build. I had a blast making it!
Nice work! Very good!
Thank you very much!!
Very clever. Found your Pathfinder scratchbuild, was "forced " to watch the Fallon NV video and now this--- Gotta say, very clever builds and backstories (they make the build time go better-er and good-er 😃) Yeah, clicked "subscribe" gotta see how the ol' CQH story(s) unfolds.
Awesome!! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I also look forward to what CQH Aerospace has in store for our interstellar adventures. I just wish the models would build themselves faster, lol.
That's a awesome diorama, and cute spacecraft, maybe a little to small for 4 Astronauts.. Would be nice to see some alien spacecraft crashlanded nearby a long time ago..
Thank you Udo!! That's funny you say that about the shuttle.. My wife said something similar. She said " all four of those astronauts are supposed to fit in there", lol. I like the idea of a crashed alien craft also. Maybe on a future build 🙂 thank you so much for watching!!
Great build! For weight I use bricks rapped in brown paper.
That's a great idea! I might have to give something like that a try. And bricks are cheap enough too. Thanks for the tip and thank you for watching!!
Very nicely done. In other videos I have seen builders use large pieces of bark mulch for rock features. Once primed and painted they looked great. Great back story, wonder what the energy source will turn out to be.
Thank you Tom! I'll have to give the bark a try on a future diorama for sure!! Hmm.. It's possible the energy source might appear on a future build 😉 thank you so much for watching the video!
This was fun. But what also works for rocks are real rocks.
Thank you Justinmc! I have seen a few videos where they used real rocks and it turned out super cool. I will definitely give that a try in future videos!! Thank you so much for watching 🙂
@@CosmicQuestHobbies Love the first 2 vids. Keep them coming. Looks like a lot of fun to build, create a universe and history, and explore. Inspiring.
@@CosmicQuestHobbies pine bark is one of my go-to's for rock as well. It gives a layered slate-like look when used horizontally. Just go break a big chunk off a tree and bake for a few minutes on a low temperature to kill the bugs.. works fantastic and nowhere near as heavy as a real rock :) Love the vids, keep at it!
Thank you Black Fox. I will have to give that a try for rocks!!
