  • Loading Pigs Into A Trailer - Load Pigs The Easy Way. Today we are loading our pastured pigs on the trailer to take them to the processor and showing the easy way to load pigs.
    These pigs have been raised on pasture for a little over 6 months and it is time for them to go to the processor as part of our pastured pork operation. These pigs are a mix of Duroc pigs and Berkshire pigs.
    We have set up the trailer, loading chute and catch pen in preparation for loading day. 2 days ago we took them away from their free choice feed and have been feeding them in the catch pen. Tonight we put some treats in the pen and closed them in with a gate. After closing them in, we use a sorting board to get them started on the chute and loaded into the trailer.
    The loading was simple and easy and took practically no time at all.
    We own a small farm homestead in central North Carolina where we are learning to raise food for ourselves as well as provide food for customers in the surrounding area. We work to raise animals on pasture like they should be and provide good, healthy, clean food that is outside of the industrialized food system.

    Awesome video. I have to turn my volume up and down a lot, but still love your videos. Your wife is awesome. I grew up on a pig farm and our pig weren’t as tame. I’ve seen the way y’all treat them with respect and I think that’s awesome. Great job guys!

    Great work! We have done a similar 'poor boy corral' which works OK in the field. Definitely helps to leave trailer there and start feeding them in it. For anyone reading - make sure pigs don't have access to trailers lights etc as they will destroy them!

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks. It seemed to work pretty good.
      I'll second they will destroy things. We had a trailer that we had borrowed from a friend. We backed it up to a corral similar to this but didn't have the loading chute. The pigs chewed and bent the tag on the trailer up pretty bad, broke the tag holder and chewed part of the walls up. I had to spend about $100 on the trailer before I could take it back to my buddy. They are really demolition machines!
      Appreciate ya'll watching.

    Coincidence, I had just finished watching your video where you separated the sows from the boars to the loading dock. Nice loading process. I like the way you set it up to get the boars loaded. Thanks you also answered my question about what you did with grumpy Helen. Glad you got her out of there. Enjoyed a full-watch 👍🏽🙂.

    Nice job Saundra!
    Q: Do you need a band saw to cut chops?
    I’ve seen how people split pigs with a large hack saw looking thing, but how about the other bone in cuts?
    I’m a 1 man show, I don’t want to depend on neighbors to fight them into a trailer.

    If you get a chance can you talk about feeders and feed. Also, do you train the piglets on an electric fence before you put them in the field. Thanks for your vids.

  • @larryparish5984

    Should have fed them in the trailer for 3-4 days before transport. They would have gone right in. You could have left the trailer in their pasture with a ramp & fed them in there.

      @SheratonParkFarms  Před 3 lety +1

    Why not a bunch of food in the trailer for them to go after?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  Před 3 lety

      We had a couple of feed bowls in the trailer but they hadn't had access to it long enough for them to find it and get comfortable going up there after it. The processing date for them came up quick (processor called us 3 days earlier and asked if we had anything) so it was a short turn around time to get them loaded.
      Appreciate ya'll watching.

  • @tomellington-taterroadfarm668

    What brand and length trailer is that

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  Před 3 lety +1

      It is an Adam brand trailer. 16 ft with an option which adds about 18 inches in height. It was a special order that was caught up at the factory during the initial COVID outbreak days. Person who ordered it didn't take it so we bought it and the extra height was included.
