    Hello there..
    I'm in honey business as well, you are right in every word you said. And , You made me think twice about establishing a website. As for the same reasons you mentioned, I see no reason for having a website or an app. However as you said it would be for information purposes.

    Thanks for the awesome info! This will be my first year getting to harvest honey. I should have around 6 supers to extract next week and then hopefully catch the sourwood flow. I know on my property alone I have 30+ sourwood trees. If I put my supers on when the bloom starts and take them off and harvest when the nectar flow is over can I label that honey as sourwood honey? From what I’ve researched it takes skeins 4-6 months to get test done to find out for sure if it’s sourwood. Any advice is much appreciated

  • @JBEESHoneyJoelBrutcher

    You mentioned you have buckets in a basement. I have several buckets and lots in bottles. But over time it crystalizes which makes it harder to sell, as people want "runny honey". I have a bucket heater and I also made a closet into a warmer. I have warmed the honey up off and on and notice it does darken the honey. Is this "bad" or an issue? The closet never gets over 100 deg. when I heat it up. Most of the time it's between 70 and 80 deg.

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  Před 3 lety +3

      I have and use a bucket heater as well. I don't think it affects it noticeably, but, it definitely breaks down enzymes that are considered to be beneficial. I just wish people would be okay buying crystallized honey, but, until then, we have no choice but to heat it. Maybe we should collectively go on a strike, lol. I prefer it like that, and think a lot of other people would too if they knew how easy it is to spread, how good it tastes, and how easy it is to return to a liquid state.

    • @JBEESHoneyJoelBrutcher
      @JBEESHoneyJoelBrutcher Před 3 lety +1

      @@BKBees I even have a sticker on the back about it. I tell people if they buy it from the store and it doesn't crystallize it's probably fake honey, so it's a good sign if it does. Oh the struggles of the beekeeper..LOL

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  Před 3 lety +1

      Is it crystallizing? Getting grainy? Changing in smell or taste at all?

    • @jenbyrne6831
      @jenbyrne6831 Před 3 lety

      I think it is grainy.

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  Před 3 lety +2

      @@jenbyrne6831 that's likely the start of it crystallizing. Try putting a jar in a bath of hot water, or just put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. If it clears up after that, it's crystallization, a natural but frustrating thing that honey does. We own bucket heaters for this, when a bucket crystallizes we hook a heater around it for a couple of days to bring it back to a liquid state.

    What are your thoughts on selling Ross rounds...🤔

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  Před 3 lety +1

      I think that's great, if you want to buy the extra stuff. I just use foundationless frames, usually one or two per honey box. If they draw it out perfectly (which they often do, because I use frames that used to have foundation and comb on them, so the old bits of wax are on the bars) I use it for comb honey containers. If they draw it out wavy I cut them into strips and put them in jars for "comb in honey". This method isn't perfect either, but at least I'm not buying anything extra.

  • @russellkoopman3004
    @russellkoopman3004 Před 3 lety +1

    Ok bearded friend, when you make a deal with a store to sell your honey what is the markdown that is common? As an example: I sold 100 lbs of honey to an orchard last year. I sold it to them for $7/lb and they resold at $10. I purposed next year we should do a $5-8 split. Most honey around here is $8/lb or lower and I am hoping they double their sales this year with a lower price.
    Last year after harvest I had 350lbs of honey staring at me with no customers and living in a town with my bees that doesn't allow bees so no local advertising done. Still sold out and had to buy 5 gal for $200 to keep customers happy.

    • @BKBees
      @BKBees  Před 3 lety

      I think we wholesale our 1lb jars at $5 per jar. We don't dictate what the stores can charge, but they usually charge around $9 and most of the stores seem pretty happy with that deal.
      That's awesome, selling out and then some. I predict two years and you'll be selling buckets :)
