    Way back in Vanilla I had an alt permanently parked in the Hinterlands, and his only job was to farm Mithrethis every single time I could catch a spawn. I ended up getting four Chan’s Imperial Robes. Kept one, gave one to a friend, and sold two more. At the time, it was probably the best looking dress in the game (better than any of the alt colors imo)

      Yeah I agree, absolutely! Definitely the best looking one out of the alt colors. Nowadays there's obviously better ones, considering how few pixels it has, but it still holds up surprisingly well.

    Nice video. I had a look into all the BoE drops across the zones myself before and I also noticed that particularly the human and dwarf/gnome starting zones are filled with both rare and non-rare mobs that drop gear items unique to those mobs whereas this is extremely rare in most of the Kalimdor zones. So yeah it's probably something they did a lot in the early days but later abandoned it for the most part which would also explain the rarity of this in the high level zones.

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  Před 9 měsíci

      @jameshill2450 Před 9 měsíci +2

      Yeah those two zones were the first ones they finished, and they literally just ran out of time to fill in the other parts as much. That's why a lot of horde places especially feel like they're not finished, because they really aren't.

      @@DArch706 another interesting aspect of this EK first design is that sometimes quest text which refers to EK locations will rarely refer to the continent as 'azeroth' and not 'eastern kingdoms'. These quests were designed before the decision was made during wow development to rename the whole world 'azeroth', and the eastern content EK and the western Kalimdor. Interestingly the quest in thinking of actually sends you from kalimdor to EK, so the decision to change the names was made after kalimdor had already been created.

  • @domacleod

    That is probably the case, but they could have at least recycled warcraft 3 items to put them as random blue drops with unique names from those bosses. A ring of protection +1-+5 (depending on mob's level), a crown of kings, mantle of intelligence, cloak of shadows, etc. Those were after all also items on the random drop table for "rare" enemies in warcraft 3, the high level head honchos guarding gold mines. Even consumables would have been nice as a drop from rares, a wand of illusion that temporarily creates a mirror image that taunts the target enemy, lightning wand that puts an aoe around you, etc.

    I returned to WoW a bit over a year ago (WOTLK classic) and accidentally stumbled upon the first two rare mobs of the list while farming deviate hides in the same cave. The initial bar was set really highly when both dropped blues and that sparked my initial interest in hunting rare mobs! Now, admittedly, I feel like Blizzard did a really fine job (at least for the first few expansions (I never played past MOP)) expanding on the rare mobs, both the loot tables and the model variety! WOTLK rares guarantee a satchel drop that can contain northrend mats and some extra gold, as well as a blue (or in one case, a mount (as well as the achievement “Frostbitten” which isn’t game-changing, but it’s nice to be recognized for my niche of rare hunting)). I loved this video and the structure which you used for describing each mob! It brought me back to seeing trigore on my first (new) character last year and it would definitely be cool to see some more videos branching out to cover rare mobs from different expansions

    Early into WoW's release these rare mobs were fairly easy to farm if you knew where to find them. I would make my rounds and kill General Fangferror, and Lord Darkscythe practically daily at one time. While they weren't guaranteed to drop their rare items, the drop rate was high enough that you would get their rare unique item roughly every 3 kills. Fangferror was practically always up whenever I would check due to his isolated location. I amassed quite a few Joonhoo's Mercy's and Songblades. My knowledge of these rare spawns as well as farming mobs that dropped certain rare patterns is one of the reasons that I was one of the first on my server to obtain an epic mount. Ahh the good ole days.

      I'm not quite sure that's the case - I did check in the database for the Alpha Client - there are commands to spawn all of the rares in that client, so that might be an indicator. But it could just be a remnant from when they turned a 1.12 client into the 0.5.3. client, if that is indeed what they did. I'm not actually very familiar with the technical side of the Alpha Client I'm using, so it's not a definitive answer either. I can probably get around to asking them at some point tho :)

    • @samwise1790
      @samwise1790 Před 9 měsíci

      @@DArch706 its purely speculation but I think the decision to do the rest of the rares with greens instead of blues was less a product of 'too much work' and instead was a product of game design philosophy around items in vanilla development. It is apparent in game abd stated by various people that they really intended rare and epic items to be, well, actually pretty rare, and therefore more special. Designers also speak about how they did not think players would really run dungeons more than once on a play through, so they didnt really envision players doing multiple runs for gear drops or xp farming. They likely thought that through leveling most players would only have a couple blues at any given time. So filling the world with hundred(s) of mobs which dropped boe blues would run counter to this possible intention.
      Personally I like this design philosphy more than later iterations of the game which virtually shower you with blues through quests, dungeon drops, and dungeon quests, and later RDF daily bag blues. I think its really taken a bite out of the 'carrot on a stick' design of the game -- 'rare' quality loot is no longer special in any way either stats, models, or actual/perceived rarity.

    Cool seeing this list, but the theory seems pretty out of the blue. If your theory was the only reason, it doesnt explain why a lot if not most rares have unique greens.
    I think it stems more from the fact that they didn't want to hand out blue items so often especially in open world.
    And that theyre named the same as the blue item quality is just a coincidence imo.
    Still i wish that some of the green unique items could be rares, especially for the rare mobs that are harder to kill.

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  Před 9 měsíci

      I'm not sure I agree with most rares having unique greens, I don't think that's the case at all just from a pretty superficial survey I've done, but I could be wrong. Maybe its confirmation bias. Is probably worth a more in-depth look, which I might do at some point in the future!
      But yeah, I agree with the rest of your statement - it definitely is just a coincidence they're named the same after all.
      Especially about harder mobs rewarding blue items - that's kind of the point I was trying to make, there should be some correlation. I've went through the hassle of killing a rare elite only to get a random green BoE that could also drop off any other mob in the open world far too many times haha
