Reaching 5’10 at 13 years, 40 years ago, I tried to hide my hight, until my loving grandmother one day brought me a fedora hat and a pair of really cool high heeled boots and told me: “you can’t stop people noticing, so own it and give them something to enjoy and envy”…. never stoped enjoying my hight and my dramatic style since then 😀 - even now in my 50’s. Did I at times wish I was a petite, delicate, feminine woman - yes. Would it fit with my personality - no. Know the strength of your body, understand proportions and mateirals and flow, and then enjoy the fun of clothes. Thanks for another great video.

If I stretch I’m 4’10”, used to be 5’1 1/2” but I’m 78 and life happens. I have decided there is nothing I can do that will make me look younger, taller or thinner, so I wear what I like. That was your first piece of advice. 👍 Love full or flair jeans and pants, longer, duster style coats and some oversized things. I do dress “trimmer” also. These were all good recommendations and l liked you library story. Be the best you, you can be. No one else can do it. Blessings

Great tips. At only 5 feet I used to be obsessed with dressing to elongate but now at almost 40 I'm like I look short no matter what so screw it and wear what I want to wear without petite restrictions. There are so many "rules" for short people to not look so short that it starts to take the fun out of dressing. Even down to no laces on boots bc of the horizontal horror for short legs. Ugh Now I'll wear the laced boots bc I like them and 100 year old me will be glad I did.

I love your tip on dressing up unexpectedly. I used to love curating an outfit for work and appreciated the compliments I got. It kind of affirmed my identity too. The pandemic did away with that mostly, I’ve been in athleisure for most of the year. All the cute clothes I wore are stowed away. This inspires me to just go for it, who cares if everyone else is casual. It makes me feel better about myself 😊

    • @EmilyWheatley

I love this. There is so much good in knowing your body type and what would work best in order to bring balance but too many people get hung up on the principle that this is all you can wear. Knowing the principles should really just give you an understanding of what you are planning to wear will do (or not). If you make a choice to wear something that accentuates something which goes against your body type … own it! Just like you, Jenny Mustard is an amazing example of this - she advocates (and demonstrates) wearing what you love even if it goes against type. If you want to hide/balance then great. If not, that’s great too. Your body; your choice.

Agree with all. Like you, I believe guidelines for your body type are helpful in teaching a person how improve their style, but holding to all the rules, limits self expression. Many times clothing is marketed to specific age groups thus limiting individually. I believe that only I know who I am, and who I am presenting to the world.

Hi Emily👋 I've been trying to figure out a cohesive style for myself for a while. I got sucked into kind of a black hole of body typing/kibbe id's during the pandemic, lol. Your channel has helped me, and it's fun.😊 I love your simple, organized approach. I'm getting the noise out of my head and my closet.
I also really appreciate that you included Goth in your "find your personal style" video. I feel like some people look down on goth and punk because they aren't mainstream. (so it was very nice of you to include it) Goth is my home base🖤. Your style is inspirational to me. You look so cool and sophisticated and fierce, but you're comfortable too🙌

I just found your channel last week and am loving it! I think body typing has its place but nobody should follow and sort of "rules" with unwavering adherence. Learning that I'm a "soft classic" has helped me figure out why I would always love loose, flowy garments on hangers but when I tried them on, I hated them on me. I suppose it's given me a basic understanding of my structure and an idea of what silhouettes may flatter me more. So now I don't waste time trying on things that I will inevitably dislike but I'm not looking at everything and ticking off the "soft classic checklist" and making sure it's what David Kibbe thinks I should be wearing.

Yes! I agree with you that the whole body type “rules” are helpful but not set in stone - wear what you love! I’m 5ft 1 and pretty much never wear heels, love long long dresses and oversized styles. I get loads of compliments on my style. Dressing like a petite person “should” just doesn’t feel me so I ignore it, and it works :)

I’m embracing my style as much as I can. Most days I either have to wear tracksuits for PE (4 days a week) or my work uniform (weekends) but I can honestly say I’ve styled them as much as I physically can. Every Wednesday I show up to school in a feminine dress or bright colours (I’ve been loving yellow, red and blue paired together, so my blue pinafore dress, red t shirt and giant yellow puffer is my favourite outfit ever) and I’ve just been loving it. Wish I had some more styling freedom, but I’m sure I’ll get some more opportunities to wear my nice clothes soon.

Love it!! And I’m so happy you chose to highlight the apple shape. I’m an apple shape. So my mid section is something that I’ve had to learn over the years how to “hide” or create illusions around it. That may sound self hating but it’s not. I’m not one of those girls that wears anything to show my confidence, I like to look stylish and put together, that’s a confidence booster for me, not throwing on a bodycon because, ya know, who’s gonna stop me. But IM gonna stop me, because bodycons don’t suit my shape. But I can throw on a structured mini dress with some flare (not to be confused with babydoll, I loath babydoll silhouettes) that accentuates my waist and shows off my killer gams. I gained weight over the pandemic, and I never thought it would happen but I kinda got lost with how to dress myself, but more so going to work in the summer because I don’t like showing my arms and cardigans are too hot, and this was just a hot ass summer. I resorted to skirts and tshirts and I was not feeling it after a while. I hate when people wear too big (not oversized, oversized is different) or too small clothes and I found myself doing the too big thing. The skirts started to make me feel old, prudish, dowdy, and like they were crutches. I think it’s very important not to dumb down your style (if you care about style) because of your weight, but you should definitely be strategic and creative with how to create that B.E.A.C.H ass lewk (see what I did there lol) anyway I’m done ranting!! Thanks for another great video!! Many blessings to you on the house!

I know this is an older video, but I wanted to comment. Knowing your own shape is *key*. I’m almost 60. I’ve only recently realized that I have very broad shoulders compared to “average” women. I couldn’t understand why women’s blouse and shirt sizes fit me everywhere except my shoulders and I was blaming the fashion industry for unattainable standards. Then I finally got out a measuring tape and compared my shoulders with average shoulders sizes (I googled various stats) and wow mind blown, now it all makes sense. 5:46

I loved the Kibbe Image ID when I first heard about it because it managed to explain my "flaws". However, ain't nobody got time to be running around in tropical, flowy dresses in cafe latte and pastel colors. That is not my world. While we should dress to complement our lines instead of mask our perceived flaws, we need to love what we got and dress the hell out of it.

Dressing for your lifestyle. That can change throughout your life. Sometimes we need comfort. Sometimes we want to be fancy. I think we should just wear what gives us the best balance of comfort and confidence. I'm a soft natural and I did like the "explaining of flaws". It did teach me to embrace the fact I'll never be a Petite romantic or gamine. I'm built pretty "strong ", lol.

Give me a "B! Give me an "E"! Give me an "A, C, but especially H, H, H"! Tuesday is town day...Groceries, Coffee Shoppe, errands, maybe lunch with sister M...but I ALWAYS dress to rock the day. The rest of my weekly schedule is generally rural home inside and outside activities so fashion is comfortably casual. That said, I start each day with a full coffee pot and always wear make-up, because each day may bring a surprise visit or trip. Great acronym, by the way...

Fun video, I was curious how you were going to explain compartmentalization. I'm working on having more intent in my jewelry, rather than just leaving the same thing on all the time. Inspired by you!

Hi Emily. I love your edgy style. You found your look intuitively. I've deffinitely done some of those looks over the years. Including the pixie and suits with sneakers. I'm only 5'4" but I've never felt short because of my rectangular frame and long limbs. Now I'm older and growing a long silver hair sexy look. I'm really impressed with the kibbee system. It's more about type that pears or apples. Lol. Check them out! Cheers from Toronto.

    • @EmilyWheatley
      @EmilyWheatley  Před 2 lety +2

I definitely think high waisted jeans look good with long torsos. Because it goes back to compartmentalizing, which I think is great for people with long torsos because it helps to define a line where you choose and separate the torso from the rest of the body. If you don't define that line, it gets lost. I don't know if that makes sense. I think I'll be doing a video that speaks only to compartmentalizing.
