I'm a latecomer to magic, starting a few years ago in my mid 40's. Wish I'd discovered it earlier. But wouldn't have without the internet and CZcams. First card trick I learnt was David Blaine's Two Card Monte, which I performed (very nervously) for my then 5 year old daughter. It got that amazed look and "How did you do that!" reaction. Felt great. Then she asked if I could do any more. So I had to learn a trick for the next week. And the week after that, and so on. I've even performed your Spread and Butter for her after learning it from your tutorial. Thank you.
I discovered the Royal Road, and dozens of great magicians on CZcams (including yourself) - showing tricks, and talking about magic. A couple of years after learning a few good tricks, I performed them for a visiting friend. He was amazed. And we went out for a meal, where one night he got me performing for the waitresses at the restaurant we visited. I kept going for over an hour. Card trick after card trick. Nervous as hell, but didn't show it, and gave me a great buzz. Which lead to a thought - what if I could do this and earn money - even a living, or just a good part time living (balancing it with part-time hours in my current line of work).
So now it's 2017, and this year I'm determined to get out and perform more to people at every opportunity. Which living in a popular seaside town, with a couple of tourist trap towns nearby, should provide a good audience for a practicing magician. Then next year, 2018 - hopefully start to find ways of earning a little here and there. Then who knows. I've heard so many magicians say how magic has taken them around the world, seeing and experiencing so many places and things, while earning a living performing magic. It's an ultimate goal to aim for. I may make it, I may not, but it's going to be fun trying.

Thank you. Although there is more to the story, which is hopefully more of a journey just begun.
      A chance encounter.
About six months after learning the first card trick, and learning a couple of coin tricks along the way, I had a chance meeting. Someone at work knew I knew a bit about computers, and asked me to look at his laptop as the sound wasn't working, and it was glitching in other ways. So I sorted it out one evening. Got the sound working, and reinstalled Office so he could use Word again.
Great, thank you, he said. As I want to write a book about magic. Magic??? I had images of robes, pentagrams, and sacrificial daggers enter my mind, and started looking for the nearest exit. I asked - what sort of magic? And he explained that he used to be a magician, mostly part-time, as a hobby he could earn from. He had done close-up, parlor, and even some stage magic. Worked weddings, corporate events, hotels, restaurants, etc. And he wold like to put down his own work and ideas down in writing for prosperity.
I told him I'd been learning some card tricks to entertain my daughter, and showed him some. In turn he showed me a few. Absolutely boggled my mind. He showed me a few tricks, a few moves, and a few techniques, and introduced me to magicians grip juice (as dry hands are a problem I have with card handling). As a thank you for sorting out his laptop he gave me a couple of packs of Bicycle cards and a couple of double backers to play with.
We still meet up occasionally to chat discuss magic and driving, as his main profession is an HGV driver. Something I was interested in becoming as a way out of the dead end job I'd been stuck in for a decade, so I'd wanted to ask for his advice while fixing his laptop. He helped with plenty of advice and tips, and last year I passed my tests, and now earn a good wage as an HGV driver myself. He has mentored me in both magic and driving.
It wasn't long after I'd been goaded by my friend to perform for the restaurant waitresses, that I had one of our meet ups, and he gave me a whole host of his old decks and various props. Several hundred pounds worth (as in value, not weight, as I'm in the UK - GBP). I still haven't learnt everything he gave me yet, but working my way through it all. It all seemed to have come together at the same time. Some may call it fate. Or luck.
It's up to me now, despite the long hours I work as a driver, to keep on learning, practicing, and studying, to make becoming an earning magician a reality. And I realise it's hard work, not luck, that's the key. Ok, so a little hint of luck (as the aforementioned chance encounter proves) can come in to play, but it's mostly work.
...Speaking of luck. I understand exactly where you're coming from when people say you're lucky. Not taking the hard work and single mindedness to follow your dreams to put yourself in the best position to make the most of breaks that come your way.
Many many years ago, I attempted to become a freelance photographer and writer. Nearly made it too (but that's another story). All the time I used to have people say I was "lucky" to have got a particular shot. Luck? Luck was only a very very minor part of it. It was my knowledge of photography, the cameras, the lenses, the film, the subject, the location, and putting myself in the right place at the right time, with the right equipment and choosing the right moment, that got the results. Luck played virtually no part in it.
And before I forget. I use the palmed card production you taught on your channel all the time. Thank you.

I've always been fascinated by rogue-ish things. I taught myself some acrobatics in my teens, juggling in my early twenties, and somewhere along the way I picked up the tenkai palm. I always loved watching magic performances but never knew how to break into the secrets. I recently decided to spend a few months in Louisiana to visit family and found myself quite lonely with a ton of free time. I decided to build on that tenkai palm by browsing CZcams, and YOU have given me a real start. I've only been at it for a couple of weeks now, but I love the challenge and test of my dexterity. I've managed to wow a couple of co-workers, shaky hands and all, and my parents get constant amusement watching me practice. I've quickly developed a passion that borders on obsession with playing cards and practicing sleights, and I have your social media projects to thank.

hey chris thanks for another heart warming vlog
i always "started" magic over ans over again the past 10 years.
as i kid my parents friends would show me these gimmicks which really mesmerized me back then.
back then it was only about finding out the trick. but then my dad took me to professional magic shows and I realised it's not about fooling the audience. it's about giving an unforgettable experience to someone else. my eyes were opened and I saw that the same trick could have thousands of different effects.
then my mom bought me some magic kits for kids and I started practicing till I performed at my mom's 50th birthday.
I wasn't content about my performance but as a loving mother she did.
then I forgot about magic for a while. got inspired by many videos to start again but never made it passed the double lift.
    then I saw your videos.
yours weren't just people showing a performance or explaining a trick. your videos actually transmitted the feeling of magic being part of your life. that's probably why your videos are always so calming and inspiring :)
so I started again with magic for real. bought a lot of Decks and am making progress like never before.
thanks for triggering the inner magician in me Chris
I'm sorry to tell you but.... I love you

You're who got me into magic. I mean, I've been interested in it my whole life, but one lonely night about a year ago while I was doing astrophotography, I was watching a Chris Ramsey video about reacting to magicians. Hey Chris, I’m over a year late to this video but I’ve been watching every single one of your videos every moment I get this past month. Honestly, what got me into magic was always being blown away from watching other people perform and how mind boggling what they ended up doing with their trick, or slight of hand. One real push for me was Penn and Teller. I myself have lost my voice. One of my vocal cords is paralyzed and I don’t really have a voice. Teller, however, performs without even saying a word. Seeing this, it helped me to realize I can express myself without needed to say anything at all. It provides me a way to cope with not being able to talk(I can talk but no one ever really can understand me, I get bullied a lot for my voice, it’s a reason I can’t perform really in bars or things because if I go to talk I can’t talk loud at all, almost like I have to whisper to get words out). Seeing everything on your channel is just inspiring me to venture out, it’s inspiring me to learn more, and want to practice day in and day out every moment I get to be able to seamlessly show the art in such a way you and your friends do. I’ve been watching Alex, and Xavier, they are spectacular as well. I have been practicing for about 2 weeks now a few tricks and I can almost do a Charlier Cut(I might’ve butchered the spelling) but I’m getting close to handling that cut better, also I’ve been practicing your false cuts. Sadly though here pretty soon I will have to take a break from my practice to undergo surgery for my vocal cords, and to be quite honest that scares the living daylights out of me because I don’t like a hospital setting. I wish I could meet you in person one day Chris, you have really become quite a role model in my life recently, and it will be because of you I will keep pushing towards becoming not only better at cards but to help spread joy around from what I’ve learned and will learn in my journey to those who need it!

I've basically just started and actually the only 2 tricks I often perform at school are The Ambitious Card and a 4-chosen-card-production-thingie (don't know what it's called). But what I do like most about magic is that I can use things for cheating and magic as well. Like a second deal or a false shuffle. ****** Warning: long text incoming ******
I am 15 years old and the first time i really got in contact with magic was 5/6 years ago. It was some TV (i guess it was david blaine or david copperfield), where he performed one simple card trick. But I was so fascinated by the thought that it was just a regular deck of cards and no gimmick, that I started to think that I could do this by my own. So on the next day a sat down at my grandpa's computer with a cheap plastic deck and started googling magoc tricks. It kind of got me from there but my hands were to small (still today not big enough to do easy palms) and the cards were crappy. After like 6 months i ordered my first to decks of bikes (i live in Germany and the only sell said plastic cards) and started to feel way more professional with them. But after 3 more months i wasn't pleased by my progress (due to my limited english skills back then, I was only able to watch/understand german videos and they were not that good) and stopped doing magic. Then my big passion became film making and photography, where i kinda kept working on illusions but focussed on it for 5 years. The way I got back to magic is kinda interesting: There is this one big youtune channel called Corridor, where they make those shortfilms etc. and on their second channel called Sam and Niko (definetly check those out guys!) where they just make Vlogs and do making ofs of their videos, one of them once brought his friend, who is a magician, to the studio and he showed them some tricks. After seeing his really casual style of performing and how astonishing reactions you can get from tricks like these, I immediately grabbed my old bikes and started research. This was around middle of August and since then nearly no day has passed, were I didn't held cards in my hands. You and Daniel played a big role on inspiration and motivation to me, because you showed this facet of magic that was so cool chill and not old guys in weird clothing doing weird things. This is my story and I just want to thank you for sharing what you're doing and being the way you are. Thanks to you, Daniel Madison and a few others, I did not give up on cards and spend nights practicing the same move over and over again. This made me get to know so many people and I made many friends, just by performing on the school yard - heck, I even got to know my Girlfriend (most amazing girl I know) by doing magic for some of her friends. I have to thank you so much, because magic has changed my life in the best way could imagine.
congrats to everyone, who's read this far, i just thought this is a great opportunity to share this with the world.
btw. sorry if there are any mistakes in the text, it is 1:50 am and english isn't my native language

I recently picked up a deck of cards, a couple weeks ago, just to amuse myself and help with my ADHD, it gave me something to do, then I started watching videos picking up little things here and there, little slights, little cuts, little flourishes, and now it's basically consuming my life and I love it, even tho I'm not a professional, but the feeling I get when I'm performing for my brother and his face when it's his card is priceless, and the feeling I get when I learn a new skill whether it be a new false cut to set up tricks, or a new flourish, it's just a great feeling to be able to do something to cope with my ADHD but at the same time be able to put a smile on not only my face but whomever I'm performing for! Chris your videos have helped me realize that even though I'm learning a trick it doesn't have to be done textbook, it's helped me to be able to put my own little spin on trick! so I just wanted to comment to show support, and just say that I'm appreciative of everything you do for your fans! Much love!

I don't remember that I saw someone performing or anything, I just remember that I was 7-8 years old, I saw that dude in the extracurricular activities' panflet wich said that he was initiating kids to magic. I signed up, and loved it so much.
He taught the very basics of magic, with not too many sleights, but not too many gimmicky stuff either, and nothing self-working as far as I remember. At the end of the year, the group would do a little show with tricks that we learnt throught the year. Each Wednesday, he would teach tricks wich showed the very base of magic and the ideas behind it(today I understand that, but I didn't).
I got hooked to magic so hard and didn't stop. I was very reserved and talked to nobody. Magic didn't help me to pass that fear of socialising. I read some books and dvds, having a really big knowledge of the art even if I was only like 10 years old. 3 years ago I stopped, because I felt it was kinda borring and I had nothing to do more. Last year I saw someone performing on TV and I had no idea how he did it, and it got me hooked back, even harder than the first time.
Now I do lots of researches and I litteraly DEVOUR everything that has to do with magic ^^
My only goal in my life is to live of magic and die with a deck of cards in my hands. I'm 15 and determined hahah, anyway thanks for the one that read all of that, I doubt there will be even one lol
    Have a good day!:)

I've known how difficult but always been lay about it when i saw a performance or trick. Then about a month ago, while trying to find "brain food" online, i was searching for new puzzles and one of your puzzle videos popped up and started playing. I was going to back out due to not wanting to see the puzzle explanation but noticed the title included a magic trick at the end. While I was watching the card trick I had such awe this time around. Magic had always been captivating and puzzling to watch but it clicked. What better way to feed your mind then Magic!?
As a spectator the awe inspiring moments, questions of how, and the thrill of being fooled fill your heart and mind, but the other side of the spectrum, the magician. The person responsible for that awe, Summoner of powers beyond our control or comprehension, SPEAKERS OF THE DARK ART! ALL IN A MANNER TO FIND OUT.....
    "Is this your card?"
The absolute dedication and learned skill a (good) magician has to give people this feeling is the real 'magic trick' in my eye. Thank you Mr. Ramsay for sharing your skill with the world and bringing me into magic as a new magician.
And as a Mentalist Chris I know what your thinking , "did he subscribe?"

you know the penny behind ear trick? My dad once performed it on me when i was 8 and i reeeeeally wanted to know how it was done. So,He gave me a little book with like 30 pages filled with simple magic trick tutorials and said that i have to learn and perform a magic trick from the book and he'll tell me how the penny behind ear trick is done. I decided to do a match disappearing trick. (with a toothpick) and performed it. After my barely succesful magic perform, he teached me his trick.
After a few years i got back to doing some simple card tricks to impress my friends. Now im fifteen and i know a trick or two... :)

I like how genuine you are in this video. I'm a couple of months older than you and magic has fascinated me since I was a kid. I used to watch every magic special that came on TV. Penn & Teller really got me into to it and Blaine's street magic opened up a whole new world for me. I'm not a magician by any means. I've picked up a few tricks here and there over the years, mostly forgotten. I don't like to preform it's just not me, but I love reverse engineering tricks and really seeing and understanding the work and skill that goes into the craft. I have a better appreciation when I know how it's done and see the beauty in pulling it off. I also love being fooled even when I know what's going on, there's the real magic right there.
So I may not be a magician but magic has always been a large chunk of my life. Thank you for sharing your story and your outlook on life. Gives me a lot to think about.

And it's been a hobby of mine ever since. Though lately, I haven't been performing for people. I just do flourishes and sleights while idle. Maybe while reading, washing dishes, browsing the web, at a stop light (lol) etc.

Come up with a routine. Arrange the quickest, the best, and the snappiest tricks you have and perform the ones that feel relevant. I always start off with the ambitous card routine to show off what i can do and then followed by others. If you feel like you've seen all the tricks that the internet and books can offer, make your own. I reached this point after a couple months of learning new tricks. When i tried creating my first trick, everything changed (when the fire nation attacked). I haven't looked up new tricks for weeks and i'm still coming up with new ones, i've even created a variation of the pass that makes it one above the bottom card and impossible to catch. Just doing a trick is cool and all, but presneting it in you own special way makes that trick pratically your own. The magic isn't in the magicians hands, but in his or her imagination.

    Thanks for sharing Chris.
I got started when I saw the video of the Irish guy performing 673 King Street for his friends at a bar. I HAD to learn how that was done, it didn't seem possible. I started researching it, found out about false cuts and shuffles, then realized that I had learned this much about sleight of hand, why not see what else I can learn?
That was a year and a half ago. I've since purchased and studied Royal Road, EatCT, Modern Coin Magic, Mark Wilson's course, Joshua Jay's course, the first couple of volumes of Tarbell, Jim Ravel's Theatrical Pickpocketing, The Magic of Michael Ammar, etc. I work an IT support job, so in between waiting on tickets or processes to complete, I practice with cards, coins, sponge balls, rope, pretty much anything I can carry around with me. I have a special love of the cups and balls, so enjoy performing that as well, although I don't bring those into work.
I hope to be able to perform at least semi-professionally someday, even if it's busking and not gigs. I got the chance to meet and speak with a local professional over the summer, and at his advice am attending my first meeting of the local SAM chapter tonight. Hopefully I'll be able to get some performance advice and do some networking, and at the very least it will be fun to geek out over effects.
Having said that, are there any books you would recommend? Card College is on my short list, as is more Tarbell.

Hi Chris, I always enjoy your charisma and openness with your thoughts. I am a pianist and music educator, graduated with my masters in piano performance and keyboard pedagogy and I would not have gotten there without making the same leap of faith that you had to take from your tiling employment.
I made the choice in early college to become a music major over continuing to be an engineering major. It was not easy where I live in Florida to accomplish such a feat just for the sheer lack of places looking to hire professional musicians of my caliber, but I was able to survive as I moved from gig to gig picking up new skills here and there.
Fast forward to now, I’ve been a successful church music director, has the opportunity to coach and teach countless students and even have opportunities to stand in front of, compose for and direct large scale orchestral ensembles and works. Things I wouldn’t trade anything for. I am now a father to a beautiful little girl (soon to be two little girls) and I now have limited access to as well as time to dedicate to keyboard practice and studies as before. So in order to scratch my music itch I now sing in a local barbershop chorus once or twice a week which is great fun.
To keep my hands and muscles fresh, I discovered cardistry and was completely captivated by it. Then I happened on your channel and immediately subbed. Then your card handling style got me interested in sleights as well. I’ve created my own fidget moves using a few of the sleights you’ve made tutorials on as well.
I’m not super super advanced, but the first (and still my favorite) trick of yours To perform by itself for a couple of buddies that still blows minds is your modified 3-card monte with a kicker ending. I’m still working on developing a patter that suits me but I like to use yours.
I can totally appreciate and relate to the message you conveyed pertaining to one’s self and their opportunistic potential. I felt like you were talking directly to my 20 y/o self back when I needed to hear that message. It hit home for me, and that’s one of the biggest reasons why I love your videos: even though we don’t know each other or have ever met before, I feel as though you’re a friend who’s around to teach me something new, or sometimes a big brother who’s logic, level headed ness and persistence in your puzzle solving could still teach me a thing or two about taking a moment to step away or when to come back.
Anyway hopefully you get to read this, but if not it’s ok too, I keep coming back for more on how to continue being a good human and to always learn something new. Thanks for all that you do, Chris!

I've been through so many instruments, and mainly settled on the saxophone, but when recently I discovered the world of music production, I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. I was already out around town performing jazz with my band, but something about music production, the independence, the ability to be every member of the band and yet be yourself, just really spoke to me. My parents had me set on a steady path to medicine all my life, and I have yet to prove to them that I'm really capable of becoming a professional musician, but your video gave me new inspiration; I won't give up either path, music or medicine, and when an opportunity comes up, I won't hesitate to snatch it. There may already be a saturated music industry now, but I believe there's still gold in the silt.

Concerning me, you did not bored me at all with this vid Chris! It is actually one of the most exciting and inspiring ones I have seen. It is so great to hear how you get started!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
I actually got into magic by watching dynamo videos on youtube while I was in a really hard time of my life. Loneliness, regrets and mistakes took me on a really bad path and I can't even really remember why and how I came to magic videos but I do think that I was looking for smiles and happiness on real people faces to be able to smile again myself...
I obviously also always was interested and fascinated by magic as a kid watching David Copperfield ( yeah I am 32 and I won't say we are old guys 😅 ) tv shows which were unfortunately pretty rare here in France.
Anyway, I practice magic for 2 years now and I can say that it already changed my life since I easily know now what to do if I need to smile. I am not a performer, since I think it takes a way much longer to be good at what magic is supposed to look like, but all I need is grabbing a deck of cards, a book, a dvd or a download to stimulate my mind and feel good and happy. Of course, these past couple of years brought me to your vids and I sincerely say that you are my favorite magician in this whole awesome community!
If you read this, you probably got bored for real so I apologize for that and for my english as well.
Come by south of France have a beer in summer, you'll love that !
    Peace.

So I recently became a dad at 25, and I thought to myself "Everybody had a dad/uncle/grandpa that is cool for something. What am I can I be cool for?" I had already learned to do the Sibil (sp?) cut for fun, but I wanted more. That is when I decided to pick up magic. My boss actually showed me some cool tricks right after I decided to start, and I looked them up. That's when I came across you Chris. Thank you for taking the time to show us this awesome passion of yours!!! I can't wait until my son is old enough for me to perform these!

Hey Chris, first off great video. It really spoke to me. I got started in magic a little over 2 years ago. I'm a professional hockey player currently in Switzerland. I broke my jaw one practice and was going to be out for 4-6 weeks. I was watch a British magician Troy on tv one day and thought it would be fun to learn. I always liked magic, but never thought I could do it. After learning a few techniques and sleights i started doing simple trick for teammates. After seeing their reactions I was hooked. I started YouTubing guy and stumbled across Asad ask 52Kards, I know you've worked with him. He really inspired me to get out and learn more. I remember seeing your spread n butter, so I started following you right after that. Now I'm at a point where I can't go anywhere without a deck of cards. I find that my favorite place to do tricks are at the airport or at social gatherings. Thank you for your CZcams and all I've learned from you, if you're ever in Boston or Switzerland hit me up!

Originally, much like you, my interest in magic started with my grandfather doing a coin trick for me. Then, I really started to get roped in by watching David Blaine. Now, I bought my first high quality deck, tagged you to it on Instagram last week. I bought Blue Monarchs and a brick of David Blaine's Black Lions after watching you. You were my inspiration to study magic and buy The Royal Road to Card Magic. I thank you tremendously for this

I stumbled across your channel around a month ago and I am honestly hooked. I am currently working my way through all your videos simply because I enjoy the content. I do plan on revisiting a lot of them to try and learn using your tutorials and close up magic is something I have always been amazed by and would love to give other people that feeling I get when I watch people like you perform. I've just picked up my first magic book on your recommendation from one of your videos. "Self working close up card magic" this is where my journey begins. Although at the moment it seems impossible I'm sure something will click. The only issue I'm struggling with is where to actually start with there being so many tricks and card handling techniques.

Your videos just brought me to magic like some months ago. At first I watched one of your puzzle videos and then went on to your channel to explore the content you're creating. So I found your magic videos starting off with the street magic. Then I just searched for some playing cards around our house and now I am starting to get myself my first uspcc playing cards and I'm so looking forward to use them for those many tricks I have already learned from your videos with my old worn cards witch are only 32 cards because it is for "skat" I don't know how to say this in English xD. I'm German and I enjoy watching your videos and they help me so much! Thank you for all that motivation and laughing every time I watch some of your videos. You are amazing! I'm sorry for my bad English xD Literally love your content

I don't have the grandfather story. My story is dull. I have literally been amazed by magic all my life. I turned 28 last year and decided I was just going to learn a few tricks. I found your channel via your street magic video. The analogy you used about walking up the stairs really struck me. So between your channel and Jay Sankey's Channel and I watched all the tutorials and there we are. I'm still terrible at it, but I'll get there. Having a similar beard made you relatable haha!
Also, as a photographer / film maker your production value really intrigued me.

I started 4 years ago when I was a freshmen in highschool, because of a CZcams video about escape artistry from scan school, I really liked Brian Brushwood and kept watching. I then found disturb really, and now I'm here and I'm actually pretty decent at it now. I really like that this channel is more about a practical look at being a preformer rather than just the tricks.

I appreciate your story, I've started just doing magic tricks, at home, at work, just for fun. I'm in sales , I work inside of the home depot and promote heating and cooling services, so I have to talk and approach every customer, so card magic is helping a little be a little bit more out there. now I haven't started yet, I'm learning and trying to craft my skills and learn the tricks, I've only practice with the employees once I get really good I am going to put the tricks in my sales pitch and get an appointment plus blow someone's mind, that's my goal, love your videos. keep them coming your awesome! much love!!

I was doing kids Parties like 20 years ago with balloon animals, as well as Magic and Puppets , things like that , now thanks to your tutorials I am not just in to the kids Magic again for my 7 year old daughter , but you inspired me to work on my Card sleights and Cardistry, You also inspired me to create my own decks of bicycle cards , I did three designs so far , 2 are a tribute to one of the greatest bands ever ,The Doors .. First deck I named "Doors of Perception" 2nd deck is called Fire from the song "light my fire" and the third is Geometric design , they are dope!!, and they all feature a shiny red ball somewhere on design , Im calling "The Red Ball Collection" I have been watching a lot of your older videos and my card work is improving every day , Thank You SENSEI
