- As a late US president once said - “Let’s make Carrera Great!!”… or something along those lines
Join me as I toss some long neglected Carrera digital cars on track and see just what happens when you show them some attention. It’s been far too long since I’ve enjoyed running digital cars on track, so this video was all it took to regrow my love for these cars and to get them back on track once in a while. Let’s run through a comparison of some very different setups to see how to make these cars winning runners.
I hope you enjoy this one! Cheers

Hi Alex 👋 like you i take the magnets out of my carrera cars .and add a little weight ..racing with magnets is so unrealistic. I bought an analogue and Digital set and put them together ..after two hours i removed my digital components and have be analogue ever since ...adding cars from whatever brand I want and no expense of chips . Yout track looks amazing. Great quality video I enjoyed watching, 👍 Greetings from Latvia 🤗...Harry
A hey Harry, yes I agree with your thoughts on the magnets. I ran my carrera cars for a good year or so with magnets in and once I did a race on a wooden track and felt that lack of magnetic force I was hooked. It felt like the magnets were stealing away from the cars actual driving abilities. I should keep a few cars with them left in, folks that come over to race often can’t handle the non-mag cars easily right off the start. Subbed your channel as well, keep up the good work on your end 👍👍
Tires are the single most important factor racing magnet or non-magnet. I love racing both. Digital magnet racing is an absolute blast racing with others. By myself Im usually running non mags or very low strength mags. I dont get the mag non mag arguments. They are both fun to me. To each their own.
I understand the magnet guys for sure. I ran them for a long time, and when I have folks over that are new to racing I do wish I had left some cars with the magnets in for them…
Love the signage behind you. Weekends....track look stout...nice. very
..
It’s coming together nicely yeah. I’ll be doing a track walk update soon as a lot has changes since this video started
“Weekends are for race cars” too true !! Love it .
Amazon find, $20! Everyone should have one
Nice video, I have my young/new racers only use Carrera so it's about helping those cars perform well. Besides the trued PG tires, I also upgrade to a slotinvasion guide as I find those don't deslot as often. I too expected the trued PG tires to be second fastest, it may be the Ford GT itself - I find those do as well as others.
Yes I generally start folks off on Carrera as well - the digital aspect seems to rope them in quicker. Once they get a healthy dose of that and show some skills (while deslotting as little as possible) i’ll typically throw down some Slot.it IMSA/LMP Lola’s to show them what kind of speeds are capable with more advanced cars. As they progress I turn up the speed on the digital CU until they’ve hit that plateau of control and that’s where the settings get locked in 👍🏽🏎️🏁
I didn’t love slot car racing until I decided to take out the magnets and upgrade the tires from the Carrera tires. So much more fun now
I agree with you 100%. They are great at first but a few races we had recently were a bit tainted by the magnetic feature. They boiled down to who had the car with the best magnetic force and highest speed, not necessarily the driver with the skills to match the feel of the car. With the mags removed the cars are a bit more even in terms of overall handling and new guys pick up the controls a lot faster once they gain some experience.
Hay Alex. I just realized this was your channel. Since i have had my AB, I have leaned more towards the analog cars. I split running time 60/40 analog/digital. I'm waiting for the November Carrera cars to come. see ya.
Hey Mark yes this is my channel 👍🏽. I’m glad you’re enjoying a mix of digital and analog. We had a great 6-car race last night - although the level of marshalling was out of control…. All cars without magnets and the speed dialled back to around 40%, it was still a good time and the racing got better as the evening progressed. We even had a chance to run some 1-1 analog IMSA, GT3 and Group C. Wishing I had more than 2-lanes
Great layout, can you post your Layout pls, greetings from Germany 👍
I will soon, thanks for the comment
Even brand new to the hobby, the tires were the first thing to change on all carrera cars.
As much as people love Paul Gage tires, Quick slicks are by far the better tire on my track.
Not truing needed, they stick really well. The magnets really slow the cars down , the pull they make downward slows the car noticeably.
Having a few Slot-It cars around, really quickens the reflexes trying to drive a Really Fast and Light car.
Totally different than any carrera car.
100%, slot.it and other brands have way less rolling drag, better components and being lighter in the right areas makes them feel like a dream
On the no mag cars with paul gage have you considered adding weights ? Great looking cars! I just got my Mustang GTY's outfitted with Bob Kat tires as I couldn't find anywhere Paul Gage or Quick Slicks to fit and they are a soft urethane and wow the cars fly! Nice video.
Hey Lew I haven’t considered weight yet. Once I focus on cars to put them head to head I’ll consider adding weight. They’re pretty heavy as it is but a few grams won’t make a huge difference I’m sure
Great video, have you tried Quick Slicks? I find them to be quicker than PG on my Carrera track.
I will be removing my mags after the new year.I also find myself running more analog cars than digital, so it will be a fun challenge
No I haven’t tried QS yet. Paul Gage is a Canadian fellow so I try to support his product as much as I can. On my next SCC or LEB order I’ll put a couple QS in my basket to give them a try👍👍
Quick Slicks, the track needs to be clean, but for me they stick way better than any tire Ive tried.
There's no truing to be done with quick slicks. I can do way faster laps with magnets, but its more fun to slide all over the place with out magnets, and they do slide constantly.
Great video showing the difference. What power level do you have it on with no mags?
I was using full power from the CU with the standard power supply. Nowadays each car as a specific brake setting but the throttle is always at 100%
Nice track layout. The Carrera cars would do better with chassis mods and body float. Great video good job!
Good advice, I will attack them one at a time at some point. The problem with accumulating a collection of cars with so little time to tinker is it always feels like they don’t get the attention they deserve. Can you elaborate on carrera chassis mods?
@@Sunshine_Speedway I have a few videos on my Channel. Also Home Racing World has a lot of carrera tuning vids also. Check the videos out.
Please.. no orange hemmoroïd red hat wannabe stuff..
Nice layout.
I don’t follow your comment but I’m interested to know what you’re talking about?!
