As someone who trained as an engineer back in the 1970's (a 5yr apprenticeship) I am blown away with the way you have self taught engineering and many other skills not available back then. This Desk has to be one of your most gratifying builds, I suspect! especially as the recipient is someone, who, despite life challenges, has a superb attitude and special skillset in engineering herself. You are the Man Jeremy! A fantastic engineering and artistic project you, and your fellow makers, can be proud of. Well Done Sir.
What he said!
I went through electrical engineering in the late 80s. There is a part of me wishing I had the resources I have today then. I would have done so much better in class. I got lucky in my career choice in medical imaging. I do still enjoy knowing why things work the way they do. It takes a lot more time to learn it on your own...
I admire people who are self taught. Its difficult and time consuming. As with any education its all how you use it. Congratulations for working through all the issues.
Never stop working the problem!...
As a quadriplegic Mechanical engineer, this felt so good to watch. I just started my professional career (post PhD), but I hope to be able to dedicate my time and skills to developing assistive technology to improve independence to those who lost it!
Glad you came to that realization sooner than me! I too am a quad ME but I spent a few years working on racecar engineering before realizing users of adaptive equipment should be helping design that equipment. I'm on a temporary hiatus from most of my engineering currently while doing disability policy work, but plan to get back to it in a couple years. I really appreciate the collaboration on this project, Jeremy noted at one point she sent the design criteria.
I am an electrical technician and have worked with MEs and EE. I would be really interested in learning more about your workflow and what solutions you have for everyday problems.
Thank you so much for brining us into the project Jeremy!! It was amazing working with you on it.
Both you make one heck of a team. Bravo!
I make weird stuff in imaginary 3D land all the time, and this is the first time one of my wild concept models has been taken to the finish line in real life. It's surreal. Jeremy you are a wizard, I don't know how you put all that together despite all our sloppy modeling practices. And to have it be for such an awesome cause, and such an awesome person in Jenica is the real triumph here.
That's amazing! Really liked seeing how you incorporated plywood and metal to support the 3D prints. But I think the real jewel of the whole video is the last sentence -when asked what she's going to make - "You never know when you get bored when you have a bunch of random components in a toolbox"
When I heard her say that... I had to end the video with that! She touched something that immediately resonated with makers!
Jeremy Fielding and Colin Furze should join up on a joint project and break the internet.
Those two should just make a video of themselves smoking a joint. That would break the internet and be a lot easier.
Make a 16:1 scale sexually neutral chrome Dalek to rule youtube.
I think we can all agree itd be less opressive than the current management xD
Just be careful, Mark Rober might join that...
That would be beautiful
Yes!
For me, doing projects, any project, for a person with special needs is one of the most rewarding endeavors imaginable. Thank you, Jeremy for sharing your experience.
I can only say WOW! Wow for the design; wow for the execution; and, most of all, wow for the wonderful gesture. Kudos to you, Jeremy, and everyone else who participated.
I Just can’t tell you enough how much I absolutely love your channel and ALL your Projects. I would love to hang out with you in your
Garage/Studio and see this stuff in person.
I also love your personality 😊🎉❗️I hope that your kids know how lucky they are to have you.
May God Bless you and your family.
Thank you 🙏, Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊❗️
Well done Jeremy. A heartwarming use of your talents, and a great example for your kids, and the rest of us.
Excellent job! The acrylic was actually salvageable. You can buff the stain out with polishing compound just as you can with headlights. The clouded rough edges can be sanded and blowtorched.
To make the cut edges clear: cut, sand, scrape (as with a cabine scraper), and the run an oxyacetylene torch very quickly over the edge to make perfectly clear. This trick is used in the special effects depts. all of the time.
As a volunteer for magic wheelchair, thank you very much for your time sir.
You deserve 10,000,000 subs for this alone. The world needs people like you.
I couldn't agree more. Well done Jeremy, on so many levels.
This was brilliant. I had no idea how anyone would fabricate the design you received, particularly in a one-person shop, but with your resources, smart subcontracting and practical experience it's no surprise how amazing the results are. I also want to add that I personally appreciate your attention to Janica's constraint specs. It looks like the desk fits perfectly in her room, and that may not have been the case if you hadn't corrected the dimensions. It may sound silly to praise an engineer for being precise, but I'm someone who struggles with perfectionism and mild OCD, and I can't begin to express how those little things can impact someone like me, so it's worth appreciating. 💜
Thank you as well for introducing me to The Smugglers Room! They did justice to your fabrication and to the original design. I don't know if Janica streams, but with an incredible setup like this, if she didn't before, she should start now.
We would use methylene chloride as a solvent for acrylics. For the edges we would flame glaze the edges with an oxy-acetylene torch. Also, if you are able, mix methylene chloride with acrylic shavings, place it on a roller until the mixture is thick and clear. It can then be used as a filler or filleting material. Takes practice, but it is worth it in the end. Good work though. The desk looks beautiful. And yes, I am a fan of Dr. Who. Love the series.
So awesome seen your collaboration with smarter everyday as well. I been watching your channel for a while back when you were pulling washing machines and treadmills off the side of the road and making your shop equipment to now using that to make this amazing desk you have certainly came full circle
I remember when you worked in a garden shed building stuff out of scrap wood and salvage motors. Fantastic to see how far you've come
The fact that you pulled this off in just two months is insane!
And the best part of the desk is it is bigger on the inside :-) E X S O L D E R N A T E !
Awesome execution Jeremy, Cool design Dan and the SW team, and off the charts paint job by Brian and the Smugglers Room. Thank Magic Wheelchair for the backing.
Thank you! It was such a great project!
You’ve come a long way neighbor we’ve been with you from when you were in your shed recycling washing machines FANTASTIC JOB BRAVO !!!
Working in the mechanical contractor field for over 3 decades now, I can say what a pleasure it is to see an engineer be hands on from design to delivery! The multi faceted learning that you have done just to complete this, is amazing! For delivering this to a young lady who is up and coming in her field, it will be a daily inspiration for her every day to hone her skills. I was brought here from The Smugglers Room. Jeremy / Smugglers Room / Solidworks , thank you for your skills and generosity! Definitely subscribed.
Love your channel, and this project was outstanding, the concept, art, functionality, and design. Not to mention the short fabrication time to deliver. Great job Jeremy! You worked another wonder. And you always have such a nice smile too. TY
Jeremy, thank you for bringing this good news story to your fans. To be an engineer one is a problem solver and you are a model problem solver.
Regarding the large rear panel, I suggest CNC’d pink foam board covered in carbon fiber.
What a great job and amazing gift :))))) Superb as always!
I love it when you work with your kids. I appreciate it so much
What a nice reminder that the skills we've learned can bring magic to the lives of others :)
This is a awesome thing you all have done for a sweet person and follow Geek... I came over from The Smugglers Room to watch this wonderful finish to a awesome project!
Thanks for sharing!
LLAP 🖖
Thank you Bruce!
Awesome! I would have used a flush cut router bit to make the new table top. Its awesome so much is 3d printed. I would probably have gone with a foam wire cut thing and then coated it with something but it looks great. Amazing job!!
For the plexiglass, you could have made a MDF template or multiple ones with a cnc then double sided tape the template to the plexiglass, jigsaw the plexiglass to within 1/8 inch if the template and then router the template with a flush cut bit.
Truly amazing. Thank you for sharing and thank you for being an incredible, humble role model.
The world needs a Jeremy Fielding University !
Someone needs to sponsor a crew to create such a "school". It would be like Houston's RX/TX site, but with classes and activity sharing as was shown here !
Jeremy is an inspiration for those who have an engineering heart. We need to come together to help continue to make the world a better place.
Fantastic Jeremy! I love your process and ingenuity which is only surpassed by your humanity.
This is an absolute masterpiece of design and construction. This girl will be inspired every time she uses this desk. And to call it a desk just seems inadequate. There must be a more descriptive word for this beautiful, elegant, other wordly creation.
I am trying to come up with something else... I am not sure what to call it :)
This is such a cool project. Thank you for be willing to help out this charity and person. I appreciate the way you communicate you ideas and how you showed what part of the model was being cut.
The best engineers find a way to make even then most functional pieces of engineering beautiful.
A Most Beautiful and Workable Project
One of the coolest CZcams channels ever
"You never know when you get bored what will happen when you have a bunch of random components in a toolbox" Truer words have never been said. I also suffer from this. My bosses have come to learn that the scariest thing I could say to them is "I'm bored, I'm going to find something to do." Incredible project! Looks great and looks like she really likes it!
Amazing job finishing that with a time constraint. I made the assumption as you were building that it would be a computer workstation. As someone who solders and builds circuits, when she said it will be used for that purpose, I can imagine the acrylic would get damaged and scratched pretty quickly. Wondering if a thin acrylic sheet that can easily be installed on top of the desk. This way it can easily be replaced and still maintain the look of the desk.
Amazing video and great inspiration!
I am thankful for your Godly heart ❤️. You are blessed and a blessing ❤ 🎉
Outstanding Achievement by a Leading engineer. Congratulations!
What a project Jeremy. Happy Father’s Day weekend too as I know you’re a great dad and take pride in that as much as your engineering skills. Amazing workstation.
Wow! Great work! I know this student personally. I teach at the Purdue Polytechnic Institute New Albany where she attends. Though she is in the electrical engineering technology program while I teach in the mechanical engineering technology program. Thank you so much for building this for her!! It looks amazing!
Great video, thanks for sharing your process with us! And I'm watching this on father's day, so it was extra fun to see you showing your kids the mill =)
A very challenging project, your skill working with a multitude of materials and electronics is amazing, well done sir.
Thank you very much for just being the kind human that you are.
WE LOVE THIS PROJECT!!! What an epic effort and result. Nicely done!
Wowzers that desk is AMAZING! Bravo!
Nice job, both in the desk, and donating the time plus.
Awesome, love the organic shapes
Boy that made me so happy! Thanks!!!!
Incredible work! This is really fantastic! Well done, Jeremy!
Wow, Sir you are amazing. Thank you.
This is amazing. You totally nailed it !
Pretty amazing .... and kind
Amazing project. Good on you Sir.
very cool build and great recipient
Best maker channel on youtube, thank you for all your hard work!
I have a Dr. Who-themed tattoo on my arm, so you could say I'm a fan, and I have to say: you did my fellow Who-vian so right.
I love the desk and adore her!
I'm seriously stealing that idea, and having my kids build Daleks out of stuff from around the house this week. 😊
Allons-y!
Your best video yet!
IMO
I love your content! Thanks for sharing!
This was an amazing and rewarding project for you. Great work
Amazing workmanship! Love the concept for the project.
You are absolutely amazing!!
Verrrry cool, Jeremy - thank you for everything and this awesome video!
Wow great work, and for a great cause, 👍 nice job guys, l'm lmpressed for sure and happy for the lady, God bless 😊
man you are next level!!!!
One of those shop vac monsters from the TV show with the phone booth
That is really well done !!!
This was sooo awesome Jeremy! Well done!
Amazing job Jeremy at bringing this to life. It’s awesome that you were able to build this with such a time crunch for her. And I gotta throw this in for the Purdue representation.
Boiler up!
That is awesome, loved hearing about the design process and iterations, my designs rarely survive first contact…it’s just how many revisions are required :)
That's sooo cuteee❤that's why I love building you can watch someone's face light up 😍 from things you take pride in
That’s awesome, great job everyone!!
What an incredible job...
Congratulations from France !
Jeremy awsome work!
Jeremy can truly call himself an engineer as an engineer is a creator. Most engineers i know are great at mathematics & arrogance but have limited creativity. It is guys like Jeremy who make the US the great innovative country that it is. Creativity is the mother invention. Thanks Jeremy for showing your genius
Awesome!!!!! Thanks for doing that.
First time seeing this channel. awesome build.
That glue gun flex at 12 :29!
daim ! this will EXTERMINATE the need for a new desk for a long time !
Amazing build Jeremy!
that was amazing Jeremy!!! i'been always looking you and learning some stuff about solidworks (thanks to your channel) i'm a chilean enginner who takes the same path that you have in life
Very impressive. Davros would be pleased.
wow that really turned out great!
You awesome person! Great work!
You should have used a flush cut router with the original as a template. Sand the edges and then *lightly* blow torch to get the glass finish back.
Incredible.
Such an amazing build!!!
This is phenomenal work Jeremy! Wow!
That was amazing and very inspirational too.
You are one smart dude!!
Once again Jeremy, you really impressed me with your skills. Another great project and a great cause. Thank you for the video.
@Jeremy! Word just doesn’t come to me to describe what you have done...
Keep moving onwards my friend…
Wow! Great job!
This was really well done and obviously a tremendous amount of work. I'm impressed because to me this took an artistic view as well as an engineering vision to pull it off. This is the level of project I would love to do for myself and my channel.
I’m not kidding you. If I could buy this, I would.
What an awesome project.. Kids getting involved is so true to your channel. Btw did I miss your new mill video? Congrats on that too..
This "new" mill is about 20 years old purchased used of course. I didn't make a video about it. I just didn't think it was interesting enough I guess... I know many channels make every change into a video LOL
@@JeremyFieldingSr I am not a machinist.. I am a software professional, but I enjoy your style. I remember you talking about some of the cooling challenges with your other mill (I think when you were milling the parts for the robot), and if this mill is solving those problems, may be a small video with what challenges this mill is solving and your decision process will be good.
