These are not things invented today. It was agreed by the UK and other World powers that they would pay their former colonial states and return the loot they stole. This went hand in hand with giving their colonial states independence. the fact that you're too ignorant to know is, shouldn't be the excuse. this was the foundation that was agreed upon when united nations were founded. If we ignore the huge cost to Britain of policing the seas with its Navy to stamp out slavery, the £20m loan the country took out to ensure the freeing of slaves by compensating slave owners was the equivalent of £2.1bn in 2023 money.
If we compound that over 188 years (the same method used to generate the huge reparations figures against Britain) we come up with £25.4 trillion.

So people who have never owned slaves will give people have never been slaves 95% of thier wealth

Debt relief/ aid are not reparations. Britain/EU/Western Powers Don't get to block African countries from international markets. Kill aspirational African leaders a Moment notice - the moment they talk about independent sovereign rights over their resources. Are Invaded the minute, they try move away from euro/us dollar/ western backed currency. Make a huff/puff about china investing on infrastructure in Africa. All the while the french blow up African countries infrastructure(i.e. guinea bissau - because some countries broke ties with them, due to their sponsor terror groups). They destroy local economies the moment they decide to disagree with western companies predatory contracts. The moment African countries decide to create independent fiscal policies that don't favour Europeans or western/g7 countries...International world is tired of the west and Their antics. they want an actual clean divorce and return stolen loot , the royal family alone has 300 billion in stolen jewels and priceless heritage and the trillions more in treasure in western museums, belonging to African countries. You don't get to cry what about charity when simultaneously you fight everyway to block African countries seeking true independence - the freedom not to be sanctioned, leaders killed and the freedom to create their own laws. belonging to African countries...colonial states want a clean divorce, stolen treasure returned from places like British museums that don't belong there and payback any lost loot. Britain along the West agreed to this during the creation of the UN. If Britain remains stubborn along with the west. Then these former colonial states will eventually create new international alignment with the likes of china, India, Russia and keep their resources (and shut you out) that you crave so much in Europe, only to be left to the dustbin of history like the Vikings, Mongols, Romans , British and soon the American empire. if that happens the cost of living will be the least of your concerns.

I do not believe the UK government should pay reparations due to the length of time past however people could claim directly from families who owned slaves, this would be easily traceable. Also there is a distinction between the slavery practised in Africa, serfdom and that practised in the atlantic slave trade, chattel racialised slavery, by far the most brutal type of slavery that existed alongside the arab slave trade. With regards to abolishing slavery, in fact it was the Mauryan Empire which outlawed slavery in BC times! The UK was one the first major nations in the west to abolish slavery in modern times after Haiti and some scandinavian countries, also it did so due to rising revolts and costs involved in maintaining the system, also replaced it with indentured servitude. On another note the africans who did sell people, some did so as they were forced at gun point, others did not know they were being sold into a brutal chattel slavery system, some put profits before all else, so it wasnt 1 size fits all scenario

And what about the African countries, like the present day Nigeria, who rounded up their own people to sell into slavery? There would have been no slave trade without them.
Then there were the people from coastal areas of the Northern shores of the Mediterranean, coastal areas of England, South wales and Ireland where whole coastal communities were kidnapped by the Barbary Pirates and taken into slavery in Africa and the Middle East. Can we claim reparations for their loss?
Have you forgotten too that this country banned slavery here in the 14th Century whilst other countries in the rest of the known world quite openly still practiced it and that some are still practicing it?
You also forget that it was Great Britain that ended the trans Atlantic slave trade at the cost of the lives of 20,000 British sailors.
The irony in all this is that those who are calling for 'reparations' are experiencing a much better life than they otherwise would have done had their forebears not been transported.

I live 3 miles from Hadrians wall, I know it was built during the Roman occupation of England and I know that the Romans enslaved local people to build it, I know the Romans came from Italy, but I have no claim on them because those who did it are dead and I was not even born.

If one group of people is strong enough to conquer another group they deserve the rewards. We recognise this in sports, the team that wins has won because they were the superior team in that game and therefore they deserve the accolades of victory and the losing team has to accept the defeat with honour and try harder next time

I am in favor of fair reparations, but fair means fair. In law (and common sense) any damages paid must be calculated based on factual data. So, how do we calculate today's damages as a result of actions that occurred 200 years ago? There is only one way, and that is by comparing lifestyles of western (US the UK, etc.) blacks now with the lifestyles of blacks still in Africa... distant cousins so to speak. If the "damaged" person's ancestors had not been taken from their homes, what lifestyle would the "damaged" person be experiencing in Africa today? So, after a fair analysis it seems to me that African-Americans today for example should pay reparations to their host country. They, in fact, have negative damages. They are better off. So, write a check to Uncle Sam and the King and we can bury an old worn-out discussion.

if reparations to slavery is sought then the source of it all i.e. the arabs should be the ones paying as it was started by arab muslim slavers who raided and went on conversion expeditions into Africa capturing and selling non-muslim africans into slavery! The Europeans and Amiericans did not want to pay the high prices and then started their own expeditions at least that is what history books tell us.
